Source text - English I was about to walk into the VA hospital when someone called my name. I turned around and saw that it was Jay, a girl from school. This was a week after my dad had come home from Iraq. Although when I say “home” I really mean “the VA hospital.” And when I say “come” I really mean “brought.” Because my dad wasn’t coming, or going, anywhere on his own: in Iraq he’d been shot in the head and was in a coma and for the whole week had just lay there in the hospital bed all the time with his eyes closed, hooked up to machines that every once in a while made fed-up sighing sounds, like they were sick of breathing for him. His doctors and nurses wouldn’t tell me if my dad would ever wake up. “We can’t make any promises,” the doctors said. But they wouldn’t tell us that he wouldn’t wake up, either. “Miracles do happen,” the nurses said. This—“miracles do happen”—was something my mom often said to my dad whenever he’d promised that he really was going to get up off the couch and find a job that day. She’d also said it when my dad told her that, since he couldn’t find a job and since she couldn’t stop giving him grief about it, he was going to the army recruiting office at the mall and joining up. After he joined up, my mom stopped saying “miracles do happen” and started saying that this was the stupidest, most selfish thing my dad had ever done, and that she’d never forgive him if he didn’t come home in one piece. After my dad hadn’t come home in one piece, my mom hadn’t said much of anything, and wouldn’t go visit him in the VA hospital, either. Anyway, when I went home and told my mom that the nurses said that miracles do happen, my mother said, “I’m sorry, Miller, but they don’t.” Which was maybe why I hadn’t told anyone—not my friends at school, not my teachers—that my dad was back from Iraq and in the VA hospital. But when Jay asked me what I was doing in front of the VA hospital, I figured it didn’t make much sense to lie about it, and so I said: “I’m here to see my dad.”
“Me, too,” she said.
I hadn’t known that Jay’s dad was in the VA hospital or even that he was in the army in the first place, but I wasn’t surprised. There was a big base right outside town. Most of the kids at school were related to someone who was in Iraq, or someone who was about to go there, or someone who had just come back.
Anyway, after that, Jay and I walked into the hospital together: through the sliding doors, and past the woman at the front desk who gave us a quick little smile before looking back at her computer. Just past the woman were two swinging doors. My dad’s room was on the other side of them. I pointed at them and said to Jay, “My dad’s room is through there.”
“My dad’s on the second floor,” Jay said and started walking toward the elevator, which was across the hall from the swinging doors. The way Jay
emphasized the word “second” it made me think that the patients on the second floor were different than the patients on the first; that they were,
somehow, better than the patients on the first floor. I knew what I’d find once I pushed open the swinging doors in front of me: the hall would be barely lit, and there’d be no noise coming from the rooms except for the machines in them, and in the vending machine room at the end of the hall there would be someone standing in front of the machine and staring at it, blankly, like he or she was waiting for the machine to make up its mind. That was the first floor. Just thinking about it made me want to be on any other floor in the hospital but that one.
“Hey,” I said to Jay. “Can I come with you?”
“Why?”
“I don’t know,” I said. I tried to come up with a reason. “I just don’t think I’ve ever met your dad before,” I finally said.
“I’m pretty sure you haven’t,” Jay said. She pushed the up button and waited. The elevator doors opened. She walked in the elevator and then turned to look at me, a shy smile on her face. “I guess that’d be OK,” she finally said. The doors started closing. She put her hand in between them; they stopped, re-opened, and I got in.
Translation - Spanish Estaba por entrar al hospital de Veteranos de Guerra cuando alguien me llamó. Me di vuelta y vi que era Jay, una chica de la escuela. Esto pasó una semana después de que papá hubiera vuelto a casa de Irak. Aunque cuando digo “casa”, lo que quiero decir es “el hospital de Veteranos de Guerra”; y cuando digo que volvió, lo que quiero es que lo trajeron. Porque mi papá no iba ni venía a ningún lado. En Irak recibió un disparo en la cabeza y estuvo en coma, postrado en la cama del hospital toda una semana, con los ojos cerrados, conectado a aparatos que cada tanto emitían suspiros de hastío, como si estuvieran hartos de respirar por él. Ni los médicos ni las enfermeras me decían si mi papá alguna vez iba a despertar. “No podemos prometer nada”, decían los médicos. Después de que se registró, mi mamá dejó de decir “los milagros existen” y empezó a decir que esta fue la cosa más estúpida y egoísta que mi papá había hecho y que nunca lo iba a perdonar si no volvía a casa entero. Después de que mi papá no volvió a casa entero, mi mamá no dijo mucho más sobre nada y tampoco fue a visitarlo al hospital de Veteranos. En fin, cuando fui a casa y le dije a mi mamá que las enfermeras decían que los milagros existen, mi mamá dijo: “Lo siento, Miller, pero no existen”. Eso fue quizás lo que hizo que no le dijera a nadie, ni a mis amigos de la escuela, ni a mis maestros, que mi papá había vuelto de Irak, y que estaba en el Hospital de Veteranos. Pero cuando Jay me preguntó qué hacía frente al Hospital de Veteranos, calculé que no tenía mucho sentido mentir al respecto, así que dije “vine a ver a mi papá”.

There was one guy we didn’t invite to the orgy. We invited everyone else: Solaire because she’s crazy, and John and Walt because they’re both so good-looking and they’re partners anyway, and we invited Amy because everybody just loves Amy, and Raya because she brings the drugs and the good stories, and Smucks and Goldman and Belle because you can just look at them and see they’ve got the moves. We invited Pete, Shayna, Cooper, and Mac—all great folks. As a last-minute thing we invited that guy we met at the liquor store that night because he had a strange kind of authority, though we didn’t really know anything about him. We invited our philosophy prof—we just knew he would be into it, and plus Solaire was already sleeping with him. We even invited Miranda just because she’s the jealous type, and since her sister was in town we threw open the door to her sister, too. But there was this one guy we didn’t invite.
You know, right afterward we told him all kinds of things. We told him, I don’t know what happened—maybe you were in the bathroom when we were telling everybody, and we said Didn’t you get your invite in campus mail? and we said It’s amazing how hard it is to organize an orgy. You’d think it’d be so easy, but really it’s complicated. But none of it was true. We had a lot of people we wanted there, but this guy wasn’t one of them, and even if none of us could come out and say that after the fact, it’s the plain truth.
It wasn’t that we were worried about him disapproving. He isn’t the type to get all sanctimonious about anything. He’s been in his share of trouble himself, and he’s heard all of Raya’s stories, and Zook has the foulest mouth in North America, and this guy is as comfortable as anyone else with all of it. Besides, hell—we invited Cathy, and we just knew she’d bring her Jesus pamphlets with her, just knew she’d hand them out as soon as things were getting interesting, and that’s exactly what she did, plus Smucks has this irritating thing where he has to rate everybody on everything—he was scoring people on sexual technique all night—and we weren’t concerned about either of them, or about Liza and her squeamishness, or even Hank and his fucking homophobia.
Meanwhile, the guy we didn’t invite, as it happens, is pretty good in the sack—not so good that it makes you feel like crap about yourself, but goodenough that you’re glad to have had sex with him. That’s what Solaire says, and Latia too, and a couple of others. He’s certainly less awkward than Walt—God, Walt! This guy, the guy we didn’t invite, takes his time, gets creative, is basically game. And he’s not overboard about it, either, not that we were turning away nymphomaniacs—Colin, for example—by any stretch of the imagination. The point is that he gets good marks between the sheets and nobody thinks he’s creepy at all.
The other funny thing is that he’s actually a pretty attractive guy, this guy we didn’t invite, though in any case the orgy wasn’t about beauty in the conventional sense. Priya, for one, is about fifty pounds heavier than she wants to be, and Serge always gets the same terrible haircut—and he pays so much for it!—and the guy in the liquor store was missing his left arm and a couple of toes. We weren’t worried about any of that.
And we weren’t strict about inner beauty, either. Most of the people who were at the orgy are stand-up citizens, but Miranda is nothing but hostility inside, and Taylor’s a serious drug addict, and Kumi literally spits on homeless people and doesn’t have any regrets about it. Our philosophy prof, when you think about it, is so ugly inside that he has to sleep with his students just to quiet the self-loathing. We were happy to have all these people, even if their souls were nothing but shit and cancer—and meanwhile the guy we didn’t invite is a nice type by just about anybody’s estimate. Not too nice, not the kind of nice where it makes you feel like crap about yourself, but the kind where he spots you twenty bucks if you need it, gives you some of his beer when you run out, listens to you nonjudgmentally when you have a problem. When Astrid’s brother died this guy was an ace with her. And a week later, because she really wanted to, they had sex—this very gentle sex—and she says it was the most beautiful night of her entire life. And Astrid never talks like that. The most beautiful night of her entire life, she says.
So. Why didn’t you invite me? he wants to know. What is it about me? He’s desperate to know.
We keep up with our excuses—We thought you had the flu and Tomas was supposed to tell you and We thought you were there, actually!—but none of it’s true and none of it convinces him. Even if one of us was willing to be honest, in the end, there’s nothing about him that you can really point to as a good reason why. That’s got to be what bothers him the most, not even getting a real answer about why he wasn’t invited when everybody else was, and when after all you consider that he’s one of our better friends.
It’s just that, when you’re putting an orgy together, you have this sense that you’d better not invite every single last person on earth—that, if you do, it’s going to change things somehow. We really didn’t want that. So someone’s got to be left out; someone’s got to be the person who doesn’t get invited—and this guy, this guy that we all love and respect and who many of us are even hot for, this guy just wasn’t going to be there, no matter what.

El pibe al que no invitamos a la orgia

Invitamos a todos los demás: a Jennifer porque está loca, a Pablo y a Rodrigo porque están buenos, y total son pareja, y la invitamos a Ale porque a todos nos copa Ale, y a Raya porque ella trae la fafafa y las pastis, y a Llach y a Marchant y a María porque la re mueven. Invitamos a Charly, a Guada, a Marce y a Mica –todos buena gente. A último momento, le dijimos al flaco que nos cruzamos en el chino esa noche porque era… guau. Le dijimos a nuestro profe de Filo –sabíamos que se prendía seguro– y encima Jennifer ya se lo estaba garchando. Hasta le dijimos a Miranda, sólo porque es una celosa de mierda. Y también le dijimos a la hermana porque justo estaba en Buenos Aires. Pero al pibe este no lo invitamos.
Obviamente, después se la careteamos mal. “No sé qué pasó, poray estabas en el baño cuando le dijimos al resto”. “No te llegó la invitación.” “No sabés qué difícil es organizar una orgía. Parece fácil pero es un dolor de huevos.” Todo verso. Había un montón de gente que queríamos que esté, pero no este pibe.
No es que se fuera a horrorizar. El pibe no es ningún santo. Tiene sus muertos en el placard, conoce todas las historias de Raya, y Zeta no tiene filtro y a este tipo le chupa un huevo. Además, dejate de joder, invitamos a Inés, que obvio que se iba a poner a rezar el Ave María, y cuando las cosas se empezaban a poner interesantes eso fue precisamente lo que hizo, y encima Llach tiene esta costumbre de mierda de hacer rankings de todo –se pasó toda la noche poniéndoles puntaje a las técnicas sexuales de cada uno--, y no nos jodía para nada, ni tampoco Lisa que es toda fifí ni Javo y su puta homofobia.
A todo esto, el pibe al que no invitamos es bastante bueno en la cama –no tanto como para hacerte sentir un loser, pero lo suficiente como para pasarla bien cogiendo con él. Eso es lo que dijo Jenny, y también Láctea, y un par más. Seguro que es menos torpe que Rodrigo. ¡Rodrigo, por Dios! Este pibe, el pibe al que no invitamos, se toma su tiempo, se pone creativo, es un jugador de toda la cancha. Y tampoco se zarpa, aunque tampoco rechazamos a los sexópatas –Cony, por ejemplo–. Ni ahí. El punto es que coge muy bien y no es un enfermito.
Lo otro raro es que está bastante bien, este pibe al que no invitamos, aunque igual la orgía no tenía nada que ver con la belleza convencional. Perla, ponele, pesa veinte kilos más de lo que quisiera, y Sergio tiene ese corte de pelo horrible de siempre –y le sale carísimo! – y al tipo del chino le falta el brazo izquierdo y un par de dedos del pie. Y tampoco nos importó.
Y no estábamos tan estrictos en torno de la interior belleza tampoco (chiste). La mayor parte de los participantes de la orgía éramos gente cool, pero Miranda es una mal llevada, y Tomi es un drogadicto del orto, y Coria patea a linyeras sin culpa abajo de la autopista.
Si te ponés a pensar, el profe de filo es tan basura que se curte a sus alumnas sólo para sentirse menos mierda de lo que es. Estaba todo bien con que viniera toda esa gente, por más jodidos que fueran; en cambio el pibe al que no invitamos es un buen tipo. No taan bueno como para hacerte sentir una bossta, pero lo suficientemente bueno como para prestarte cien mangos si los necesitás, bancarte una birra en una fiesta y poner la oreja si tenés un problema. Cuando pasó lo del hermano de Abril, el pibe se re portó. Y a la semana, porque ella quería, garcharon, pero con ternura, y ella dijo que fue la noche más hermosa de su vida. Y ella nunca habla así eh. Así dijo, posta: que fue la noche más hermosa de su vida.
Entonces. “¿Por qué no me invitaron?”, pregunta el pibe. “¿Qué onda?”. Se muere por saber.
Se la seguimos careteando. “Pensamos que estabas engripado” y “Tomi dijo que él te avisaba” y “¡¿Cómo?! ¡¿Vos no estabas, boludo?!”. Todo verso, y él no compra. Y la verdad que no hay ningún motivo específico. Eso debe ser lo que más le molesta, que nadie le cante la justa de por qué no fue invitado cuando todos los demás sí, y más si tenés en cuenta que es uno de nuestros mejores amigos.
La cosa es que, cuando estás armando una orgía, te da esta sensación de que mejor no invitar a toooodo el mundo –que, si lo hacés, de alguna manera las cosas van a cambiar. La verdad que no queríamos que las cosas cambien. Entonces alguien tiene que quedar afuera, alguien tiene que ser la persona que no es invitada. Y este chongo, este chabón al que todos queremos y respetamos, y con el que muchas estamos calientes, este pibe no podía estar ahí, ni en pedo, ni a palos.
I am a language-orientated person with a strong background in sales, marketing, e-commerce, translation and educational services. In 2010 I launched BCS (Bilingual Cultural Services) and have been providing communication, cultural, and language services as independent contractor.
I have been living in Ireland since 2011 and have been working as a full-time freelancer language service provider since 2013. At the moment, I divide my time between teaching in-company Spanish and online English lessons, and providing on-site and over-the-phone interpretation (medial, legal, commercial) for the language pair English-Spanish.
In addition to this, I have also trained and been working as tour guide of Dublin, running history-theme walking tours in Dublin and Howth since 2014.
