English to Portuguese: FSH
Source text - English Summary and Explanation
FSH is a member of the gonadotropin family of hormones and is secreted by the -cells of the anterior pituitary gland. It is a 30,000 Daltons heterodimer molecule, composed of an alpha chain and a beta chain. The alpha chain (96 amino acids) is structurally similar to the alpha chains of other glycoproteins, like LH, TSH and hCG. The beta chain (120 amino acids) is unique to FSH and it confers its biological and immunological specificity and directs its specific physiological activities.1
FSH is necessary for follicular maturation and ovarian steroidogenesis in mature females. Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) is secreted by the hypothalamus and it acts on the anterior pituitary of the brain to release FSH and LH. These act on the ovaries, stimulating the maturing follicles and corpus luteum to release estradiol and progesterone.
The levels of FSH in serum fluctuate during different phases of the menstrual cycle in response to estradiol and progesterone which control the circulating levels of FSH by a negative feedback effect on the hypothalamus.
FSH release is inhibited by rising estradiol and progesterone levels produced by the corpus luteum in the luteal phase.2, 3
