Source text - Spanish Medicina, derecho, teología y matemáticas: un debate en los Diálogos de Pedro de Mercado
El “Diálogo Quinto de la Comparación de las Ciencias” de los Diálogos de Philosophia natural y moral (1558) de Pedro de Mercado tiene como marco conceptual la doctrina de los grados de abstracción del saber, de tradición escolástica, que permitía establecer la jerarquía de las ciencias. En la praesentatio queda establecida la superioridad de la teología, que ocupa el primer puesto por ser la única ciencia divina, el segundo rango corresponde a las matemáticas, las más nobles de las humanas. La medicina, en cuanto que conocimiento de la naturaleza sensible, ocupaba un estadio inferior, mientras que a los estudios jurídicos no se les había concedido ningún lugar en la tradicional concepción enciclopédica del saber, subordinados por un lado a la ética y por otro a la retórica.
El verdadero “debate”, entre el médico Joanicio y el licenciado jurista se desarrolla en un plano menos abstracto y el contenido de sus argumentaciones no se sale de los consabidos tópicos criticando el ejercicio de sus respectivas profesiones. De ahí el carácter polémico de este diálogo (altercatio).
La caracterización y análisis de este diálogo renacentista abre una perspectiva en el ámbito de la historia de las mentalidades al tiempo que permite la observación de algunos recursos de la interlocución y ofrece datos interesantes para la historia del léxico español.
Translation - English Medicine, law, theology and mathematics: a debate within Pedro de Mercado’s Dialogues
The conceptual framework of the Fifth dialogue on the comparison of sciences, from Dialogues on natural and moral philosophy (1558) by Pedro de Mercado, is based on the doctrine of the gradual abstraction of knowledge, of scholastic tradition, which allowed for the establishment of a hierarchy of sciences. In the praesentatio, theology, the sole divine science, is established as superior, while mathematics, the most noble of the human sciences, is assigned the second position. Medicine, being the knowledge of the feeling nature, held an inferior position, while no place within the traditional encyclopedic conception of knowledge was granted to legal studies, these being subordinated to ethics on the one hand, and to rhetoric on the other.
The true “debate” between doctor Joanicio and the jurist develops on a less abstract level, and the contents of their arguments follow the same old clichés as they criticise the practice of their respective professions, hence this dialogue’s controversial nature (altercatio).
The description and analysis of this Renaissance dialogue gives us an outlook on the history of mentalities, while allowing us to take note of different means of communication and providing us with some interesting information for the history of the Spanish lexicon.

Born in New York to a Spanish mother and an Iraqi father, I attended a French-speaking primary and secondary school in Brussels, Belgium (the European School of Brussels).
After completion of my European Bacchalaureate, I studied a BA in Social Anthropology an Arabic at the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).
I then moved to Madrid, Spain, where I studied several MAs in Translation and Interpretation involving all my working languages.
I have worked for many years as a private language teacher, a freelance translator and a liason interpreter. As such, I have worked mainly for CEAR (the Spanish Commission for Refugee Assistance) and ENAR (the European Network Against Racism).
I currently work as a conference interpreter and audiovisual translator. My latest assignments have been the 7º International Congress on Environmental Medicine in Madrid and the UNOHCHR Indigenous Fellowship Programme in Geneva.

Je suis née à New York, de mère espagnole et père iraquien. J'ai réalisé mes études primaires et secondaires en langue française en Belgique (École Européenne de Bruxelles).
Après avoir obtenu mon baccalauréat européen, j'ai étudié un Bachelor of Arts (Bac +4) en Anthropologie sociale et Arabe à SOAS (École d'études orientales et africaines), centre appartenant à l'Université de Londres.
En 2004 je me suis installée à Madrid où j'ai étudié plusieurs maîtrises en traduction et interprétation en arabe, français, anglais et espagnol.
J'ai travaillé pendant un grand nombre d'années comme traductrice et interprète de liaison, principalement pour CEAR (Comission espagnole d'aide aux réfugiés) et ENAR (Réseau européen contre le racisme).
Actuellement je travaille comme interprète de conférences et traductrice audiovisuelle. Mes dernières missions en tant qu'interprète ont été le 7ème Congrès international de médecine environnementale à Madrid et le Programme de bourses pour représentants autochtones du Haut-Commissariat des Nations Unies aux droits de l'homme à Genève.

En la actualidad trabajo como intérprete de conferencias y traductora audiovisual. Mis últimos eventos como intérprete han sido el 7º Congreso Internacional de Medicina Ambiental en Madrid y el Programa de becas para representantes indígenas de la Oficina del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos en Ginebra.
