Source text - Spanish El “credit scoring” es un método que se está empleando cada vez más entre las instituciones financieras para medir el riesgo de otorgarle financiamiento a las PYMEs. Para todo empresario es importante conocer el método que los bancos usan para medir el riesgo y los beneficios de mantener un puntaje favorable.
El “credit scoring” es un método que consiste en asignarle un puntaje al potencial deudor que, a su vez, representa una estimación del desempeño del crédito para el banco. La CEPAL (Comisión Económica para América Latina) revela en un documento que el instrumento más amplio y exitosamente utilizado, para incrementar el acceso de las PYMEs a la financiación es el “credit scoring”. En los Estados Unidos, hace años que se viene usando masivamente para otorgar tarjetas de crédito y otros tipos de financiamiento a las personas.
Antes, las instituciones credencias raramente empleaban el “credit scoring” cuando el solicitante era una pequeña o mediana empresa (PYME). Gracias a mejoras en las tecnologías de los sistemas de información crediticias, las instituciones han ampliado el acceso a créditos bancarios a las PYMEs a través de la utilización de este método. No es más que una herramienta utilizada por bancos que permite evaluar el riesgo de crédito del solicitante de manera automatizada, objetiva y consistente.
Según la CEPAL esta herramienta le aporta mayor transparencia al mercado, permitiendo que las PYMEs accedan a mayores opciones de financiamiento, y reduciendo el costo crediticio considerablemente. Aunque su uso se ha expandido considerablemente en los últimos años, el juicio del analista no ha sido totalmente eliminado de la originación de créditos. Es necesario contar con un sistema confiable, como el que se viene usando en los Estados Unidos desde hace décadas, llamado el “FICO score”. Es importante que el solicitante y el banco confíen en el mecanismo para su éxito.
Translation - English “Credit scoring” is a method increasingly used by financial institutions to measure risk factors when providing financing to SMEs. It is important for all business owners to understand the method used by banks to measure these risks as well as the benefits of obtaining a high score.
“Credit scoring” is a method that consists of assigning a score to a prospective borrower, which in turn represents a credit performance assessment for the bank. A study conducted by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) found that “credit scoring” is the most widely used and successful tool for facilitating SME financing. This method has been used extensively in the United States for years to approve credit cards and other types of personal loans.
In the past, lenders rarely used “credit scoring” to evaluate the creditworthiness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Thanks to technological advances in credit reporting systems, financial institutions have extended loans to SMEs by using this method, which consists of a statistical model used by banks for evaluating credit risks in an automated, objective and consistent manner.
According to ECLAC, this tool helps create greater transparency in the market, provides SMEs with additional financing options and considerably reduces credit costs. Although its use has increased significantly in recent years, some banks have not completely eliminated the analyst´s judgment for extending loans. It is necessary to have a reliable system, such as the FICO score model which the United States has been using for decades. It is important for the borrower and the bank to trust the mechanism in order for it to be successful.
