Translation - English a) Although farming machinery generally present different types of risks, emphasize will be made on personal security and significant physical risks, such as noise and vibrations. The following will discuss preventive aspects to be considered when using a tractor, as it is one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment and is used in a wide range of farming processes. Machine operators generally, and in most cases, receive a brief and basic explanation regarding the use of equipment but are not often offered the chance of learning about safety and preventive actions related to accidents and illnesses in the workplace. Given tractors are responsible for most accidents that take place within the farming sector, the following will mention the main risks of farming machinery, especially tractors.
Level of noise and how it affects people:
Being exposed to high levels of noise not only makes people irritable and nervous but also mainly affects listening capabilities, work effectiveness and personal security. Being exposed to high levels of noise produces a temporary or permanent decrease in hearing. In general, security levels state levels below 85 dBA are accepted, estimating that being exposed to higher levels for short periods of time will cause temporary hearing loss as the ear will recover its original hearing ability thereafter. Progressive, permanent or irrecoverable hearing occurs when exposed to noise on a daily basis.
b) Noise coming from tractors and self-propelled agricultural equipment.
One main source of noise is the machine’s engine through explosions within cylinders, muffler gasses and fan. The following are percentages of each component:
Muffler: 45 to 60 % of total noise
Aspiration: 15 to 20 % of total noise
Fan: 12 to 20 % of total noise
Noise caused by solid surface vibrations in direct or indirect contact with the engine: 15 to 25 % of total noise
