Source text - English A collective awakening: acknowledging our hidden resources
Mankind is at the threshold of a new era. The rapid technological and scientific growth that has marked our lifetimes, distinguishing us from generations of human beings over many millennia, has swept all of us up in its exciting energy and momentum. None of us needs convincing that we are experiencing a momentous event in the history of our species. The technology revolution has ‘globalised’ us. Whether we like it or not we are no longer just individuals in individual lives. We are individuals who also participate in a global or collective reality that transcends the boundaries of our physical experiences. Our nascent awareness of this collective reality and our ‘holistic’ (physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual) participation in it is challenging us to redefine our perception of ourselves. Our awakening to a global dimension of ourselves that was previously hidden from us is causing us to ask many questions, some of them very uncomfortable and disconcerting.
The aim of this article is to bring a few of these questions to the light of our collective consciousness. Foremost among them is the question, How can we better manage our individual and collective resources to achieve greater happiness and a better quality of life for all the members of our global family? Implicit in this question is the assumption that the ‘Next Economy’ must take account of all our human needs. In the original sense of the word ‘economy’ (the judicious management of the household), we must all become efficient ‘economists’ or managers of our collective household.
Translation - Italian Un risveglio collettivo: la scoperta delle nostre risorse nascoste
Il genere umano è alle soglie di una nuova era. La rapida crescita tecnologica e scientifica che ha segnato le nostre esistenze, distinguendoci da generazioni di esseri umani nel corso dei millenni, ha trascinato tutti nella sua euforica energia. Nessuno tra noi ha bisogno di convincersi del fatto che stiamo vivendo un evento di portata eccezionale nella storia della nostra specie. La rivoluzione tecnologica ci ha “globalizzato”. Che ci piaccia o meno, non possiamo più considerarci individui dall’esistenza individuale. In quanto individui, partecipiamo anche di una realtà globale o collettiva che trascende i limiti della nostra esperienza fisica. La crescente consapevolezza di questa realtà collettiva, di cui partecipiamo in maniera “olistica” (vale a dire fisicamente, emotivamente, intellettualmente e spiritualmente) ci sprona a ridefinire la percezione di noi stessi. La scoperta di questa dimensione globale in noi, che prima ci era nascosta, solleva un certo numero di interrogativi, alcuni dei quali piuttosto inquietanti e sconcertanti.
Lo scopo di questo articolo è di far affiorare alcuni di questi interrogativi alla nostra coscienza collettiva. La più importante di queste domande è la seguente: Com’è possibile gestire le nostre risorse, siano esse individuali e collettive, per ottenere una maggiore felicità e una migliore qualità della vita per tutti i membri della nostra famiglia globale? Implicito a questa questione c’è l’assunto per il quale la “Next Economy” deve tenere in conto tutti i bisogni dell’essere umano. Nel senso primario del termine “economia” (la gestione giudiziosa del focolare domestico), tutti noi dobbiamo diventare efficienti “economisti” o manager della nostra dimora collettiva.
