Source text - English NARRATOR— Here, the Buddha stands in the Abhaya mudra. This stance symbolizes protection, peace, and the dispelling of fear. The Buddha’s right hand is raised to shoulder height, with the arm bent. The palm faces outward. According to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha made this gesture immediately after gaining enlightenment. Tradition also tells that once, when the Buddha was about to be attacked by an elephant, he held up his hand in the gesture of fearlessness, and calmed the angry animal.
This statue is carved of wood, one of many materials used in the creation of sculptures of the Buddha. Different materials help us identify the time period when a sculpture was created. This one was carved in the late twelfth or early thirteenth century.
This is the Meditating Buddha sheltered by Naga, also known as Muchalinda. The image was common during the Angkor period. The outspread hood of the Naga serpent protects the Buddha as he meditates. His hands form the Dhyana mudra—hands held low, palms facing upwards with the right hand over the left. When the thumbs touch in the Dhyana mudra, the triangle formed represents the mystic fire that consumes impurities. It also represents the Three Jewels of Buddhism—the Buddha himself, the Dharma, and the Sangha.

Aquí, el Buda está realizando el Abhaia mudrā. Esta posición simboliza protección, paz y disipación de los miedos. La mano derecha del Buda está levantada a la altura del hombro, con el brazo doblado. La palma de la mano mira hacia fuera. Según la tradición budista, el Buda hizo este gesto justo después de conseguir la iluminación. La tradición también dice que una vez, cuando el Buda estuvo a punto de ser atacado por un elefante, sostuvo la mano en alto en señal de no tener miedo y calmó al animal.
Esta estatua está tallada en madera, uno de los materiales usados en la creación de esculturas de Buda. Los diferentes materiales nos ayudan a identificar el período en el que una escultura fue creada. Ésta fue tallada a finales del siglo XII o a principios del XIII.
Éste es el Buda meditando protegido por Naga, también conocido como Muchalinda. Esta imagen fue muy común durante el período Angkor. Source text - English Young hippos have a longer childhood than most mammals. It’s six or seven years before they reach sexual maturity – and this … turns into this. Even as adults, hippos have plenty of leisure time. Every few days, they haul out of the water and into the sun… the warmth helps speed up their digestion.
But they usually wait for the big boss to make the first move. Fresh from his recent triumph, the veteran’s street cred is intact. If he’s lucky he could stay in power for a decade or more. He’s an impressive sight – and he knows it!
As soon as the boss has shown the way, the rest of the hippos set off up the beach - the bulls in a strict pecking order according to size and rank. Once ashore, there are other customs to observe. Muck-spreading is the hippo equivalent of presenting your business card. Bulls recognise each other mostly by smell, and pick up subtle signals about each other's place in the hierarchy. Hippos are sticklers for etiquette and it isn't until the Beachmaster has parked his chin that everyone else seems able to fully relax.
Once the sunbathers are settled, they attract various hangers-on. Red-billed oxpeckers dine on skin parasites. And other beachcombers come home in too… baboons. They’ve come to collect a few of the hippos' business cards. Hippo and elephant dung is a treasure trove of seeds and insects, always worth a rummage. Guinea fowl come to the beach to sand bathe and squabble. But their rowdy behaviour can cause trouble. Hippos aren't as brave as they look.
Translation - Spanish Los hipopótamos jóvenes tienen una infancia más larga que la mayoría de mamíferos. No alcanzan la madurez sexual hasta los seis o siete años y pasan de ser así… a así. Incluso de adultos, los hipopótamos tienen mucho tiempo libre. Cada cierto tiempo, salen arrastrándose del agua para tomar el sol… el calor acelera su digestión.
Normalmente, esperan a que el gran jefe dé el primer paso. Fresco desde su último triunfo, la reputación del veterano sigue intacta. Si tiene suerte, puede mantener el poder por más de diez años. Él causa impresión – ¡y lo sabe!
En cuanto el jefe muestra el camino, el resto de los hipopótamos se ponen en marcha hacia la playa – los machos en estricto orden de tamaño y rango. Una vez en tierra, se pueden observar otras costumbres. Para los hipopótamos, la diseminación de excrementos es como presentar una tarjeta de visita. Generalmente, los machos se reconocen por el olor y captan sutiles señales sobre su rango jerárquico. Una vez se han acomodado, atraen a varios caraduras. Los picabueyes de pico rojo comen parásitos de la piel. Otros vagabundos también se unen a la fiesta: los babuinos. Vienen para recoger algunas de las tarjetas de visita de los hipopótamos. Sus heces y las de los elefantes contienen una gran colección de semillas e insectos en los que vale la pena hurgar. Las pintadas vienen a la playa para disfrutar d ela arena y pelearse. Pero su comportamiento alborotador puede causar problemas. Los hipopótamos no son tan valientes como parecen.
