Source text - English Beach House
Objective: To develop a house by the sea where the measurement is proportional to the quantity of materials permitted to use, and, at the same time working the ground’s unevenness and the interaction between the inside and outside.
Approach: The principal concept of the house was to take advantage of the visuals through terraces that turn over the sea, while maintaining a wide social space. The house is erected as a meeting place, where the spaces are projected in a smooth and free form, allowing those people who occupy them to enjoy the different possibilities in each one of them. This way a backyard that faces the frontal façade of the house has been created, so that two types of spaces can be connected at the same time: the beach and the garden. The public area is formed by a main “box” made of horizontal wooden sheets that permit the continuous ventilation of the inside and could be opened to become a wide free space. The private area faces the sea so it can relate to the landscape through terraces that are over the shore. It also connects the backyard where a more intimate social area, with access to the exterior through stairs that finished by the sea, is developed.
Materialization of the idea: For the construction of the house, a limited quantity of materials was given, both in square meters as in cubical depending on the case. These materials had to be used in their entirety. The base structure is projected in concrete and the closings made of wood, steel and glass, depending on the zone and the need of openness towards the exterior. This achieves the unification of the pieces of each material as a whole.
