Scale is important to an image as it help the viewer to get a sense of the size and
importance of the subject. Humans are great to establish a scale relationship with the
subject of the image. By comparing a mountain in the background and a hiker, the viewer is able to evaluate the size of the mountain since he has a good idea of the size of the average man or woman.
The focal length that you decide on will have a great effect on the scale of the picture.
Using an 18mm focal length will yield a very different scale than using a 200mm focal
length.
At 18mm, the objects in the background will appear much smaller than at 200mm.
As a rule of thumb, the approximate focal length equivalent to the human field of view is
50mm. You also have to take account for sensor magnification or crop factor. Since many sensors are smaller than a 35mm film or full framed digital sensor, the focal length you really obtain is not the one listed on the lens but a little higher. Take Nikon's DX format (called aps-c) for example. To obtain the 35mm equivalent focal length you need to multiply the actual focal length by 1.5x so a 18mm is the equivalent of a 27mm lens in
35mm format. So to get a 50mm focal length you would need an actual focal length of
33.33mm. The closest available is 35mm.
So, using any lens over 50mm in real or full size-equivalent focal length will result in an
exaggeration of the scale and anything under will result on a diminution of the scale.
This can be really useful depending on the message or feeling you want your image to
convey.

L’échelle dans une image est très importante car elle aide le lecteur de l’image à percevoir la taille et l’importance du sujet représenté.
Les humains ont naturellement un sens développé de mise à l’échelle. En comparant une montagne dans l’arrière plan et un alpiniste, le lecteur est capable d’imaginer la taille de la montagne sachant qu’il possède la référence de la taille moyenne d’un homme ou d’une femme.
La longueur focale que vous choisissez aura une grande importance sur l’échelle de l’image. En utilisant un objectif de 18mm vous obtiendrez un résultat très différent qu’avec un objectif de 200mm. Avec un 18mm, les objects de l’arrière plan apparaîtront beaucoup plus petits qu’avec un 200mm.
Une règle principale est que le champ de vision humain équivaut à une longueur focale de 50mm. Il faut aussi tenir compte d’autres facteurs technologiques, tels la qualité et l’effet de grossissement d’un capteur digital(CCD) et de sa zone de capture.
Sachant que la zone de capture de la plupart des CCD est plus petite qu’une image film 35mm, la longueur focale que vous obtiendrez ne sera pas exactement celle inscrite sur l’objectif mais légèrement supérieure. Par exemple, prenons le format Nikon DX – aussi appelé ‘aps-c’ : pour obtenir l’équivalent d’une image film 35mm, vous devez multiplier la longueur focale inscrite une fois et demi (x1,5); donc, un objectif digital listant 18mm donnera le même résultat qu’un 27mm optique (film). Et pour obtenir un rendu de 50mm vous devrez utiliser un objectif digital de 35mm (50 divisé par 1.5 = 33.33mm).
Donc, l’échelle de l’image obtenue dépend donc de l’objectif employé. L’échelle sera plus grande avec des objectifs supérieur à 50mm et sera diminuée en utilisant des objectifs inférieurs à 50mm.
Ceci peut être utile pour jouer d’un effet optique ou changer le sens et l’émotion d’une photographie.
