Source text - Spanish La pediatría es la medicina de los chicos, la medicina hacia los chicos, pero también hacia los adolescentes, hacia los jóvenes, y hacia todo aquél que conserve ese espíritu de persona que quiere sentirse niño.
¿Cómo se desenvuelve la pediatría? Intenta que los chicos no se contagien, intenta vacunar, intenta proteger, intenta cuidar; sin embargo, tiene que basarse en algún principio general. ¿Por qué tienen que estar sanos los niños? La pregunta, que parece irreverente, tiene un contexto, que se remonta a ochenta años atrás. Hace sólo ochenta años sabíamos que los chicos tenían que estar sanos porque eran parte de la producción laboral de una familia: había que tener varones sanos, de piernas sanas, de brazos que supieran levantar leña, que supieran arriar vacas, que supieran montar a caballo para colaborar en la economía familiar; y las chicas tenían que estar bien nutridas, sanas, tenían que tener vientres fértiles, para poder casarlas bien, y para poder tener hijos que también se iban a incorporar a la producción.
El siglo XX viene con novedades fuertes, y cambia ese paradigma. Afortunadamente, los chicos en su mayoría no trabajan, y ahora tienen que estar sanos por un concepto novedoso: tienen que ser felices. ¿Y quién decide eso?
Los pediatras somos objetivos al ver a una familia: entra una familia a nuestro lugar de trabajo y se abre un mundo muy particular, se abren corazones, intimidades, escenas que no imaginábamos. Detrás de la consulta de una tos hay un conflicto familiar profundo, detrás de un chico golpeado hay una situación de “bullying”, detrás de un broncoespasmo hay falta de inserción, falta de vinculación con sus amigos… detrás de una consulta pediátrica hay muchas otras consultas.
Translation - English Pediatrics is the branch of medicine dealing with the health of children; medicine oriented towards children, and towards teenagers too, and young adults and anyone who has the spirit of a child.
How does Pediatrics work? It tries to prevent contagion; it aims at vaccinating, protecting, and caring for children. However, it has to stem from a basic principle. Why do children need to be healthy? The question, though irreverent, has a context that transports us 80 years back in time. Just 80 years ago, we knew that children needed to be healthy because they were part of the labor production of a family. Families needed healthy male children who were strong enough to lift firewood, drive cattle, ride a horse, and so on, to contribute to the family economy; girls, in turn, needed to be healthy, eat well and have fertile bellies to arrange a good marriage and to be able to have children who could also become part of the production.
The 20th century brought about dramatic changes that did away with that paradigm. Fortunately, most boys do not need to work, and they now need to be healthy due to an innovative concept: they need to be happy. Who decides on that?
We pediatricians are impartial when observing a family – they enter into our workplace and a singular world opens up to us; there are opened hearts, sensitive information, situations that we would not imagine. A cough checkup hides a deep family conflict. A bruised child hides a bullying case. A bronchospasm hides a lack of inclusion and binding with friends… a pediatric visit reveals many other stories.
