About Me
I
have a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of California, San
Diego with an area of specialization in East Asia, including 5 years of foreign
language classes; two years of Japanese and three years of Mandarin Chinese.
After graduation, I won a scholarship for one year to continue studying
Mandarin at the prestigious Nanjing University through the Chinese Ministry of
Education, then later worked in Shanghai for almost a decade in the food and
beverage and advertising industries.
Upon my return to the US, I began working
as a full-time translator and interpreter in the English and Chinese language
pair, and also completed a 24 unit Court Interpreting program at UCLA
Extension. Between 2013 and 2021, I worked as a linguist on projects for diverse
clients ranging from JP Morgan and Bank of America, immigration and law cases,
and ultimately for government agencies such as DHS and Department of Defense.
In 2020, owing to effects from the Covid pandemic and the increasing use of AI
in translation services, I began to position myself for a move to a more
technology-based language role, and in 2021 I completed a 6-month data
analytics course through Thinkful (now Chegg learning) to learn the technical
skills needed for working with machine learning and a welcome refresher in
statistics. Then, from 2021-2014, I worked as a business analyst for a
developer of commission management system software, EvolveNXT, honing these
skills in the demanding environment of software development.
