Source text - English Professor Harvey, in your latest book you say that Marx chose revolutionary humanism above teleological dogmatism. Where might we find the political space for the realisation of this revolutionary humanism?
It’s not something that we have to create – there’s plenty of people out there at odds with the world they are living in, searching for a non-alienated existence and hoping to give some meaning back to their lives. I think that the problem lies in the historical Left’s incapacity to get to grips with this movement, which really is one that could change the world. At the moment, this search for meaning has above all been appropriated by religious movements (like evangelists), and politically that can imply its transformation into something totally different. Here I’m thinking about the anger against corruption, rising fascism in Europe and the radicalism of the US Tea Party.
The book ends with a discussion of three dangerous contradictions (unlimited growth, the environmental question, and total alienation) and a series of vectors of change. Is this a sort of programme, or will the revolt have to be based on a sort of fluid coalition of different forms of discontent?
The convergence of different forms of opposition will always be fundamentally important, and we saw as much with Gezi Park in Istanbul or the movement that took to the streets of Brazil during the football World Cup. Activism is fundamentally important, and again I think the problem here is the Left’s inability to channel it into anything. There’s a number of reasons for that, but I think the most important of them is the Left’s failure to abandon its traditional focus on production in favour of a politics of everyday life. In my view the politics of the everyday is the crucible where revolutionary energies might develop, and where we can already see activities that are seeking to define what a non-alienated life might look like. These activities are more a matter of the space where we live than the space where we work. Syriza and Podemos offer us a first glimpse of this political project – they are not pure revolutionaries, but they have awakened very great interest.
Translation - Portuguese Professor Harvey, em seu último livro você afirma que Marx optou pelo humanismo revolucionário e não pelo dogmatismo teleológico. Onde seria possível encontrar um espaço para a concretização deste humanismo revolucionário?
Isto não é uma coisa que precisamos inventar – tem muita gente aí fora em conflito com o mundo em que em vive, que busca por uma forma de existência não-alienada e espera trazer de volta algum sentido à própria vida. Penso que o problema está na incapacidade da esquerda histórica em saber lidar com este movimento, que pode realmente modificar o mundo. No momento, os movimentos religiosos (como o evangélico) têm se apropriado desta busca por sentido, o que pode implicar, politicamente, na transformação destes movimentos em algo totalmente diferente. Penso, por exemplo, no ódio contra a corrupção, no fascismo em ascensão na Europa e no radicalismo do Tea Party norte-americano.
O livro termina com uma discussão sobre três contradições perigosas (crescimento ilimitado, a questão ambiental e alienação total) e uma série de vetores de mudança. Isto seria um tipo de programa ou a revolta precisa se basear em uma espécie de coalizão fluída de diferentes formas de insatisfação?
A convergência entre diversas formas de oposição sempre terá importância fundamental, conforme temos visto ocorrer em Istambul, com o parque Gezi, e no Brasil, com o movimento que foi às ruas durante a Copa do Mundo. O ativismo político é de importância fundamental, e, novamente, creio que o problema esteja na incapacidade da esquerda em canaliza-lo. Há diversas razões para isto, mas penso que o motivo principal seja o fracasso da esquerda em abandonar a sua ênfase tradicional na produção em favor de uma política da vida cotidiana. Ao meu ver, a política do cotidiano é o ponto crítico a partir do qual podem se desenvolver as energias revolucionárias, e onde já ocorrem atividades orientadas para a definição de uma vida não-alienada. Tais atividades estão antes relacionadas ao espaço de vida do que ao espaço de trabalho. Syriza e Podemos nos oferecem um primeiro vislumbre deste projeto político – não são revolucionários autênticos, mas despertaram grande interesse.
