CHAPTER 1
Friday August 29th
I could not have known that this day, of all days, was the one that would change my life so much for the worse.
I was walking down the steps at the side of Southwark Cathedral. I’d left work in time to get to Borough Market while it was still open. Julia was away in Florence working on a project for her conservation studio, absorbed in her work restoring paintings and we hadn’t seen each other for over a month.
The old Market had been transformed in recent years with the arrival from all over the world of so many young workers in London. Now almost every taste and every cuisine was catered for at the bustling stalls wedged beneath the Victorian overhead railway, its cast iron supports forming an ornate roof.
It was still a wonder to me how much I loved Julia. And how much she loved me. We were soul mates. It was as simple as that. Nor could I believe how lucky we’d been to buy the apartment overlooking the Thames.
As I left the Market, the view across the river, taking in the Embankment and with St Paul’s dominating the opposite skyline, was magnificent. The Thames was always in flow, turbulent and full of interest, a working river with craft of all shapes and sizes.
Turning onto the riverside walk, popular with tourists but still retaining enough of the character that for centuries had made it a mysterious place, I walked on through a low brick walled tunnel where a busker, no doubt a young musician from one of the London orchestras, was playing Brahms. I walked past the terrace restaurant at the base of our apartment building, typed in the security number on the touchpad, pushed open the door and walked up the flight of stairs that led to the apartment.
Something was wrong. The door to the apartment was open; not ajar, but open just four or five inches.
We never left the door open no matter how good the security system of the apartment building was supposed to be.
I approached the door, trembling. I pushed against it. It would hardly give; there was something behind the door, stopping it from opening. I pushed harder until it gave. I forced my way inside.
It was Julia. She’d collapsed against the inside of the door trying to escape the apartment. There was blood everywhere.
I felt for a pulse - at her wrist, at her neck- but there was none.
I felt the deepest sadness welling from the base of my soul. It began with a scream that progressed to a howl of bitter regret followed by tears that shook my whole body.
Someone had killed her. Her body was still warm. It must have happened not many minutes before.

No habría podido intuir que ese día en particular mi vida cambiaría tanto para mal.
Iba bajando las escaleras laterales de la Catedral de Southwark. Había salido de mi trabajo con el tiempo suficiente para llegar al Mercado Borough antes de que cerrara. Julia se encontraba en Florencia trabajando en un proyecto para su estudio de conservación, absorta en su trabajo de restauración de pinturas; hacía más de un mes que no nos veíamos.
El viejo Mercado había sido transformado los últimos años con la llegada a Londres de tantos jóvenes trabajadores provenientes de todas partes del mundo. Hoy en día se ofrecía todo tipo de sabores y comidas en los distintos puestos instalados debajo del ferrocarril aéreo estilo Victoriano, cuyos soportes de hierro formaban un techo florido.
No dejaba de sorprenderme cuánto amaba a Julia. Y cuánto ella me amaba. Éramos almas gemelas. Tan simple como eso. Tampoco podía creer lo afortunados que habíamos sido al comprar el departamento con vista al Támesis.
Al salir del Mercado, la vista del río con sus orillas y St. Paul dominando el horizonte era magnífica. El Támesis estaba siempre en movimiento, turbulento e interesante, un río colmado de barcos de todo tipo y tamaño.
Ya de regreso a la acera que bordea el río, poblada de turistas pero que aún conserva reminiscencias de un pasado que por siglos la ha transformado en un lugar misterioso, atravesé un túnel bajo con paredes de ladrillos donde un músico callejero, sin lugar a dudas un joven músico de alguna de las orquestas de Londres, estaba ejecutando una obra de Brahms. Pasé por la terraza de un restaurante debajo del edificio de nuestro departamento, marqué el número de seguridad en el teclado digital, abrí la puerta y caminé hasta las escaleras que guiaban directo a mi departamento.
Algo estaba mal. La puerta de mi departamento estaba abierta; no entreabierta, sino abierta unas cuatro o cinco pulgadas.
Nunca dejábamos la puerta abierta aun cuando el sistema de seguridad del edificio de departamentos fuera lo suficientemente bueno.
Me acerqué a la puerta, temblando. La empujé. Apenas cedía; había algo detrás de la puerta que me impedía abrirla. Empujé con más fuerza hasta que cedió. Ingresé con dificultad.
Era Julia. Ella se había desplomado contra la puerta del lado de adentro tratando de escapar del departamento. Había sangre por todas partes.
Palpé su pulso -en su muñeca, en el cuello- pero no tenía.
Sentí como brotaba una terrible tristeza desde lo más profundo de mi alma. Comenzó con un grito que fue progresivamente creciendo hasta convertirse en un aullido de amargo lamento seguido por lágrimas que sacudían todo mi cuerpo.
Alguien la había asesinado. Su cuerpo aún estaba caliente. Debía haber sucedido unos pocos minutos antes.

I don’t know where you live, but me and Caleb live in
Harleyville, Missouri. Caleb is my little brother, and he always does smart-alecky things to get me in trouble.
Harleyville isn’t too big, when you compare it to Joplin or Kansas City, but it’s lots bigger and more modern than Malta Bend or Humus or any of the other towns in Organo County, except Queenston, which is the county seat and is where jail is. Papa is always reminding me and Caleb
about the jail so that we’ll be good. Me and Caleb have never been out of Missouri, but when we grow up and start to work, we’ll probably travel clear around the world. Right now, Harleyville is just about our size.
