Translation - English At first they watched one another from a distance and with no small degree of mistrust. They were the only Westerners in this neighbourhood still free of contamination, still deeply Chinese. Most expats tended to settle in the same old areas of Beijing. Enclosed spaces where they carried out the same incestuous lifestyle they could equally have had in any other capital anywhere else in the world. But not them. They were different, and they knew it. Two battleworn explorers treading paths as yet untrodden. They had discovered this hidden-away corner seething with authenticity, and therefore charm, ‘it’, and ‘quid’, and only they knew the authentic Beijing. Naturally, each of them considered the place his and his alone. The fact that they’d both landed in the neighbourhood at almost exactly the same time only complicated matters; hard to say which had been in and planted his flag first. To top it all off, one of them was from Buenos Aires and the other from Paris, and it’s a truth universally acknowledged that the natives of both these cities are the crème de la crème, the very best that the alignment of the planets has to offer (pending further notice from astronomers or space probes).

Translation - English Some years ago, the Tuva shaman Saiana was called upon by a family to heal a hunter who had been struck by a fit of madness. The family explained: “he’s been like this since yesterday, since he came back from hunting. He no longer recognises his wife or his mother.” Saiana had the hunter tied up and gave the order for him to be whipped. While he was being whipped, he cried out and chanted: “Come on, hit me, keep going!” The shaman performed a ritual and the hunter fell asleep. The next day he recounted: “I wandered for a long time through the taiga. As I was coming back, I shot a squirrel. He had long hair, very thick. I had never seen anything like it and I thought to myself: what is this creature? No one’s ever going to take it from me.” And he threw the squirrel away. As he went on with his journey, he heard voices and very loud laughter around him. He ran home, but couldn’t remember how he got there. Saiana, who was telling me about this case, concluded: “This squirrel was no ordinary squirrel; it was a servant of the master of the place”.
