When Gene Roddenbery called to let me know that Star Trek was going to become a regular series, I had no inkling of how it would change my life outside of getting a regular paycheck. As I mentioned earlier, I was so naive that I didn’t even bother to change my phone number, which was listed in the directory (I realized my folly and corrected that mistake). The first hint of the Vulcan’s popularity came with the laundry baskets full of mail after „The Naked Time“ aired. I was both relieved and pleased to know that Spock had fans; after all, not so long ago, NBC had wanted to ditch the alien.

Když mi volal Gene Roddenbery, aby mi dal vědět, že bude Star Trek pravidelným seriálem, neměl jsem ponětí, jak mi to, kromě pravidelné výplaty, změní život. Jak jsem se již zmínil dříve, byl jsem tak naivní, že jsem se ani neobtěžoval změnit si telefonní číslo, které bylo napsáno v seznamu (svou bláhovost jsem si uvědomil a svou chybu opravil). První známkou Vulkáncovi popularity byly došlé koše na prádlo plné pošty, které přišly po odvysílání „Nahého času“. Oddychl jsem si a měl jsem radost z toho, že má Spock fanoušky; vždyť nedlouho před tím se chtěla NBC mimozemšťana zbavit.
