Bio

A multilingual translator
I translate from Spanish, German, French and Portuguese into my native language, English. All four of my source languages have been my primary language of work or study at one point or another. I use them regularly to communicate with clients, as well as in my personal life. Being able to work from a variety of source languages is especially useful for my agency clients, as I can ensure consistent quality in four different language combinations - one such client has recognized me as their Translator of the Month.

Localization (and localisation) expertise
I am a native speaker of Canadian English, which is closer to US English while retaining many of the spelling conventions of British English. However, I am able to confidently write for audiences on both sides of the Atlantic thanks to long experience working with US- and UK-based clients and editors. My experience is also helpful for those seeking to craft an international, 'neutral'-sounding message that does not tend too much towards one dialect or another.

Specialization in environment and development...
I worked in the environmental sector prior to becoming a translator, both in NGOs and research. My MSc thesis, for example, focused on aspects of cacao farming in Central America. If you need someone who can speak the lingo on projects related to sustainable agriculture, botany or environmental science, look no further!

...but also an accomplished generalist
One of the most rewarding aspects of my translation career has been the ability to learn about a variety of fields and perspectives. As such, I am delighted to take on projects in new areas for me and always carry out the research needed to provide top-quality translations. From cosmetics to contracts, I'm happy to take on translations in nearly all subject areas.

Certified translations
I have been certified by the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario for the Spanish-English language pair; the ATIO's directory currently lists me as a Certified Translator. I am also a Candidate for Certification in Portuguese-English and German-English. For language combinations in which I am not yet certified, I can provide a signed translator's affidavit sworn before a Canadian notary.

Translator training
Since Fall 2019, I've been delivering a series of courses for Spanish to English translators at the School of Continuing Studies at the University of Toronto. This four-course program seeks to familiarize translation students with the theory and practice of translating from Spanish into English. The courses are delivered online through monthly translation packages and webinars, with an in-person exam at the end of each four-month course. Because of the online format and international exam proctoring agreements, the courses are open to students anywhere in the world.
