Source text - English You’ve just won the inaugural Maddox prize, awarded for your continuing work exposing scientific misconduct in China despite the threats you face. How does that feel?
I am thrilled and honoured. There are many people who are supporting me and fighting with me, so I consider this award as an acknowledgement of all our efforts, not just mine.
What prompted you to start challenging dubious pseudoscientific claims in China?
In 1998, after eight years studying in the US, I returned to China and was shocked to see it was deluged with pseudosciences, superstitions and scientific misconduct.
What action did you decide to take?
I had created a Chinese website called New Threads in 1994 when I was a graduate student at Michigan State University as a forum for sharing Chinese classics and literature. From 2000, I started to publish articles on the site fighting scientific misconduct and fraud. Eventually, New Threads became a flagship for those fighting pseudoscience, misconduct, fraud and corruption among the Chinese science community.
Are dubious claims a big problem in China?
The majority of cases exposed are plagiarism, the exaggeration of academic credentials and faked research papers, which are endemic in China.
Tell me about some of them.
A typical case was the nucleic acid “nutrition” scheme – supplements promoted to boost energy levels in the tired, pregnant and old. It involved more than a dozen Chinese biochemists and was the first that brought wide media coverage, both domestically and internationally. New Threads has exposed more than 1000 cases of scientific fraud.
Why is science fraud such a problem in China?
It is the result of interactions between totalitarianism, the lack of freedom of speech, press and academic research, extreme capitalism that tries to commercialise everything including science and education, traditional culture, the lack of scientific spirit, the culture of saving face and so on. It’s also because there is not a credible official channel to report, investigate and punish academic misconduct. The cheaters don’t have to worry they will someday be caught and punished.
What have been the worst moments?
I have been sued more than 10 times. Because the Chinese legal system is very corrupt and a ruling is not always made according to the evidence, it is not surprising that I have lost some libel cases even though I did nothing wrong. In one of these, a local court at Wuhan ordered me to pay 40,000 yuan in compensation and transferred the money from my wife’s account. I have also narrowly escaped from an attack with pepper spray and a hammer.
Has it been worth it?
Yes. I fully understand the risk I am facing and am willing to take it. What troubles me most is that my wife and my young daughter also have to endure vituperation and personal attacks.

Che cosa l’ha spinta a cominciare il suo lavoro di indagine sulle affermazioni pseudoscientifiche in Cina?
Nel 1998, dopo aver studiato negli Stati Uniti per 8 anni, sono tornato in Cina e sono rimasto sconvolto nel vederla completamente immersa nelle pseudoscienze, nelle superstizioni e nelle frodi scientifiche.
Quali azioni ha deciso di intraprendere?
Nel 1994, quando ero ancora studente alla Michigan State University, creai un sito chiamato New Threads, da principio un forum sulla letteratura e sui classici cinesi. A partire dal 2000, però, ho cominciato a pubblicare sul sito articoli sulle frodi scientifiche. Alla fine New Threads è divenuto un importante luogo di scambio per tutti coloro che si battono contro le pseudoscienze, le condotte non etiche, le frodi e la corruzione nella comunità scientifica cinese.
Queste affermazioni dubbie sono un grosso problema in Cina?
La maggior parte dei casi che abbiamo portato alla luce riguardano plagi, esagerazioni di qualifiche accademiche e falsi articoli di ricerca, tutte cose che sono endemiche, in Cina.
Ce ne racconti qualcuno.
Un caso tipico è quello dello schema di “nutrizione” dell’acido nucleico – integratori promossi come rinvigorenti per persone stanche, donne incinte e persone anziane. Erano coinvolti più di una dozzina di biochimici cinesi, e fu il primo caso portato all’attenzione dei media, sia locali che internazionali. New Threads ha denunciato più di 1000 casi di frodi scientifiche.
Perché quello delle frodi scientifiche e un problema così grave, in Cina?
È il risultato dell’interazione tra totalitarismo, mancanza di libertà di parola, stampa o ricerca, un capitalismo estremo che cerca di commercializzare qualsiasi cosa comprese la scienza e l’educazione, una forte cultura tradizionale, la mancanza di spirito scientifico, la cultura del salvare la faccia e così via. Inoltre c’è il problema della mancanza di un canale ufficiale credibile per riportare, investigare e punire comportamenti scorretti in ambito scientifico. Gli imbroglioni, in sostanza, non hanno alcun timore di essere scoperti e puniti.
Qual è stata la sua peggiore esperienza?
Sono stato denunciato più di 10 volte. Poiché il sistema legale cinese è molto corrotto, e le sentenze non vengono sempre prese in base alle prove, non dovrebbe sorprendere che abbia perso alcune di queste cause sebbene non abbia fatto nulla di male. In una di queste, una corte locale a Wuhan mi ha condannato a pagare 40.000 yuan [4.800 € ca., N.d.T.] come compensazione, e hanno trasferito i soldi dal conto di mia moglie. Sono anche scampato per poco ad un attacco con dello spray al peperoncino e un martello.
Ne è valsa la pena?
Sì. Sono pienamente consapevole dei rischi che corro e sono disposto ad affrontarne le conseguenze. Ciò che mi preoccupa di più è che anche mia moglie e la mia giovane figlia debbano sopportare offese e attacchi personali.
