Source text - Russian
Translation - English With a grand reverence befitting the occasion the Cultural Capital will, on May 9th, honour the 72nd Anniversary of victory in the Second World War. On this day a grandiose parade will pass through Palace Square, being followed by the march of the “Immortal Regiment”, before the day’s celebrations culminate in a dazzling Fireworks display.
The horrors of the Second World War (known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War) are now in the past but they are not forgotten. The heroic struggle of Soviet soldiers and of the Soviet People as a whole serves as a stirring example of courage and patriotism for younger generations in Russian society. Every anniversary of this Great Victory is however, a tearful one; as time passes fewer and fewer of those who fought for the peace we now enjoy remain with us, although their names will live on eternally in our history.
On the day of the celebrations, Palace square will place host to a traditional ceremonial parade by currently serving soldiers, which will also feature modern military hardware. For the whole day entrance to the square and to the seating which will be erected there will be limited to holders of special invitational tickets. Those not lucky enough to receive such tickets can, however, watch the parade arrive to Palace Square along Nevsky Prospekt.
In St. Petersburg, as in many other Russian Cities on this day, there will be a march by members of the ‘Immortal Regiment’. This solemn procession will be made up of descendants of those who fought in the war, who will carry aloft photographs of their relatives in their memory.
In honour of May 9th volunteers will be also handing out over one and a half million St. George’s ribbons. This orange and black stripped ribbon was, in the 18th and 19th Centuries, given to soldiers as a reward for performing heroic deeds on the battlefield. Later, in the 20th Century, it became a symbol of victory over fascism. The tradition of handing out these ribbons for free appeared 10 years ago and now these ribbons have become so popular that you can see them not just around the time of the May 9th celebrations but at all other times year as well. Often people wear them tied to bags or display them on their cars.
From May 7th to 9th St Petersburg will be decorated with giant banners in the colours of these ribbons and patriotic music from the time of the war will play on streets across the city. At the same time museums will display exhibitions and theatres will run plays appropriate to the celebration’s theme, whilst on the city’s squares it will be possible to watch celebratory concerts and other patriotic demonstrations. Of particular interest will be the military history festival “Spring of Victory – 2017” which will take place in St Petersburg’s 300th Anniversary park.
As is traditional, this year’s celebrations will end with an extravagant, extraordinarily colourful fireworks display which starts at 10pm.

Translation - English Festival: Imperial Gardens of Russia
9th-18th June
“Avant-gardens” – Such is the theme of the upcoming festival “Imperial Gardens of Russia”, which will, as per tradition, open the summer season of the Mikhailovskii Gardens. Visitors of the festival will be amazed by a range of works of horticultural artistry inspired by the Russian avant-garde movement.
For twenty years already St Petersburg has, every June, played host the Imperial Gardens Festival. For a total of nine days those visiting the Makhailovskii Gardens will be able to see landscape compositions, floral arrangements and installations, as well as art-objects created entirely from plants, based on works from the collections of the Russian Museum.
The choice of theme for this year’s festival is not accidental; 2017 is the 100 year anniversary of the Russian Revolution and, as a result of the close interlinkage between political events in Russia at the beginning of the 20th Century and the avant-garde cultural phenomenon, the works of Russian avant-gardists’ grant a unique insight into the history of the revolution. In addition, 2017 is also the year of Ecology, under the auspices of which lectures, discussions and exhibitions on the topic of environmental protection have been held all across Saint Petersburg. These two events combine to give the festival its overall theme. Walking along the paths of the festival, attendees will be treated to horticultural references to the works of Kazimir Malevich, Vassily Kandinsky, Vladimir Tatlin, Pavel Filonov, Ivan Puni, Nathan Altman, Mikhail Larionov, Natalia Goncharova and other revolutionary artists of the 1900s. The floral compositions of this year’s festival are set to impress not only with their their conceptual approach to landscape and horticultural design, but also with their inventive and flexible solutions to the problems of landscape gardening. Protection of biodiversity, effective and innovative utilisation of waste and the creation of a society in which humans can live in peace with their surrounding environment are the tasks of the modern avant-garde of ecology, a fact which will be reflected in the works of the festival.

Source text - Russian
June 13th
Translation - English Evgenii Onegin the Opera
“I will never give this opera over to the direction of theatres before has been shown in the conservatory. What I need here is not a large stage, with all of its routine and conventionality, with its talentless directors and pointless, although magnificent, staging… For Onegin I need singers who will perform simply, but well.” - From the letters of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
June 13th
Mikhalovskii Theatre, an avant-garde staging of Tchaikovskii’s Evgenii Onegin directed by Andrey Zholdak
This, the first opera directed by Andrey Zholdak, brings forth a churning storm of the most contradictory emotions. The story told here by Zholdak is far from that which Pushkin laid out in his original novel-in-verse of the same name. According to the director himself however, his aim in creating the opera was not simply to retell Pushkin's classic, but to create his own original story, guided by the music of Tchaikovsky. Zholdak describes the plot of the opera as passionate and laced with sensuality throughout, whilst describing the performance as a whole as “a test of cultural Saint Petersburg”. Zholdak explained the contradictory nature of international and domestic reception of his work, claiming that, whilst in Europe his style has long been seen as classical, in Russia he is still seen as a representative of shocking avant-gardism.
Zholdak's interpretation of Tchaikovsky's opera is replete with metaphors, visual effects as well as surprising and immersive theatrical trickery. Its defining themes are, in the directors own words, sensuality and beauty. The director’s aim was to create a sense of empathy and to push ajar a door into the secret life of the soul. Zholdak’s take on Tchaikovsky’s 19th Century opera, provides a modern twist on an already well-known story, portraying its characters as our contemporaries in time. The performance has already won three Golden Masks, for best operatic performance, best direction and best lighting designer.
If you wish to compare Zholdak’s performance with a modern interpretation of the classical staging of the opera, you can do so in advance at the Mariinskii Theatre, where traditional stagings of Onegin will run on the New Stage on both Jun 11th and 12th.
Zholdak’s performance lasts 3 hours and 45 minutes and takes place across two acts.
