English to Portuguese: Teaching Children and Parents to Understand Dog Signaling General field: Science Detailed field: Livestock / Animal Husbandry
Source text - English Safe human-dog relationships require understanding of dogs’ signaling. As children are at particularly high risk of dog bites, we investigated longitudinally how children from 3 to 5 years and parents perceive and interpret dogs’ distress signaling gestures. All participants were then taught how to link their perception of the dog with the correct interpretation of dogs’ behavioral signals and tested again. Results show a significant increase in learning for children and adults, with them showing greater understanding of dogs’ signaling after intervention. Better learning effects were found with increasing age and depended on the type of distress signaling of the dogs. Effects endured over time and it can be concluded that children and adults can be taught to interpret dogs’ distress signaling more correctly. Awareness and recognition of dogs’ stress signaling can be seen as an important first step in understanding the dog’s perspective and are vital to enable safe interactions.

entendimento dos sinais dos animais. Como as crianças especialmente têm grande risco de levar mordidas, esse artigo estuda de forma ampla como elas na faixa de 3 a 5 anos e os pais entendem e interpretam a sinalização dos cães quando eles estão tentando nos dizer algo. Todos os participantes foram ensinados e avaliados na forma como relacionavam suas próprias percepções com a
interpretação correta dos sinais comportamentais dos cães. Os resultados mostram um aumento significativo no aprendizado de crianças e adultos, ao mostrar maior compreensão da sinalização dos cães após o experimento. Melhores respostas foram encontradas nos participantes de idades mais avançadas e no tipo de sinal de socorro apresentado pelos animais. Os efeitos continuaram ao longo do tempo e pode-se concluir que crianças e adultos podem ser ensinados a interpretar os sinais de ajuda que os cães apresentam de uma forma mais correta. A conscientização e o reconhecimento dos sinais de estresse dos cães é um primeiro passo para entender a perspectiva do animal e é vital para permitir interações seguras.
