Source text - English This is just the introduction to the Spanish audioguide for visitors of the HMS Victory in Portsmouth. The job, commissioned by Guide ID, involved translation and transcreation of a 12,000 word script, research on history and nautical terms from the Age of Sail, and voice over recording. Audio post-production was carried out by Gordon Milton at Rivendell Digital.

In this particular case, an article chosen at random of the many published on the Davis Cup and Fed Cup Spanish websites run by the International Tennis Federation. The editor had asked me to reduce the following article to 400 words in Spanish in less than one hour. Other tasks for this freelance job for the ITF include writing my own news stories during the rounds of each tournament.

Former champions Croatia take on visiting India in an intriguing Davis Cup by Rakuten Qualifier and will rely on their top-ranked player Marin Cilic to lead the charge against awkward opponents determined to reach the Davis Cup Finals 2020 in Madrid.
World No.37 Cilic acknowledged he needed to be on top of his game as the injury-hit Croatians take on India at home as they aim to reach their second successive finals, having made a group stage exit at the inaugural new-format tournament last year in the Spanish capital.
The Balkan nation’s top-ranked doubles specialist Ivan Dodig pulled out of the tie with an arm injury and with singles world No.31 Borna Coric also sidelined by a hand ligament problem, Cilic will be under immense pressure on the indoor hardcourt surface.
Borna Gojo will make his home debut for Croatia against Prajnesh Gunneswaran in the opening singles rubber on Friday before Cilic locks horns with Ramkumar Ramanathan.
Franko Skugor, who stepped in for Dodig, is designated to team up with Mate Pavic in Saturday’s doubles against Leander Paes and Rohan Bhopanna before Cilic plays Gunneswaran and Gojo takes on Ramanathan in the reverse singles.
Cilic, the 2014 US Open winner, heaped praise on India as he also looked back on his illustrious Davis Cup career and credited the competition’s new format at the draw ceremony held in a 13th-century chateaux overlooking the Zagreb city centre.
“I am proud to have had great results in the Davis Cup down the years,” Cilic told a news conference after the draw.
“I have great memories of it all, most of all winning the Davis Cup in 2018. I always relished playing for my country and this time is no different.”
“I hope we will have a fantastic weekend and qualify for the Finals. Personal records don’t matter to me very much, it’s the desire for team success that inspires me.”
Cilic acknowledged that Croatia, who also won the competition in 2006 and lost to India 3-2 away in 1995 in the only previous meeting between the two sides, face a tough challenge.
“Their singles players are very solid and Gunneswaran as a left-handed player can be very awkward,” he said.
“I have to make sure that I win both my singles because Borna Gojo is making his home debut and it won’t be easy for him. India also have a very good doubles team and we expect no walk in the park.”
Speaking about the competition’s new format, Cilic said:
“It’s a very long season on the ATP Tour and hence the new format is good because it takes some of the strain off the players.”
India, who lost last year’s qualifier to Italy 3-1 at home, will take confidence from the fact that they have won three of their last four ties on hard courts.
Gunneswaran pointed out the Indians, who finished as the competition’s runners-up three times, had a mountain to climb against the home team likely to be galvanised by a passionate home crowd.
“It’s always a challenge,” he said. “Croatia are a very good team as they have some strong and experienced players. We are going to have to play our best tennis to reach the Finals in Madrid, which would be a dream come true for all of us.”
Gunneswaran also revealed that Gojo was not entirely an unknown quantity although the two players have never played a competitive match.
“I saw Borna play in a Challenger in Bangalore and I actually practiced with him once in Australia, so I know how he plays,” said the world No.122.
“We are both raring to go and we’ll see how it pans out.”

Magazine Luiza posts 11.4% drop in Q4 profit

Private firms pledge to pay soy farmers more than $14mn not to deforest Brazil’s Cerrado

The exact mechanism by which these funds will be disbursed has not yet been developed. In most of the area traditionally known as “the birthplace of waters”, private landowners under Brazil’s Forest Code can legally deforest up to 80% of their property, that’s as compared to Legal Amazonia, where only around 20% can be legally cleared.

Carrefour buys 30 stores & 14 gas stations from rival Makro for $454mn

The Brazilian unit of France’s Carrefour SA has agreed to buy 30 stores and 14 gas stations in 17 states from rival retailer Makro’s Brazilian subsidiary for 1.95 billion reais ($453.69 million), the French retailer said in a securities filing on Sunday. The stores will be integrated into the cash & carry Atacadão chain. Makro, whose Latin American stores are owned by Netherlands-based SHV Holdings, will continue to operate in Brazil but with only 24 stores in the country’s richest state, Sao Paulo. The sale still needs to be approved by domestic antitrust watchdog CADE.

Industrial production up 1.8% in January thanks to manufactures

Chile Industrial Production Index (IPI) registered a growth of 1.8% in January 2020 compared to the same month of the previous year. This was mainly due to the positive impact of the manufacturing sector whose production grew 3.4%, according to data from the National Statistics Institute. The manufacture of substances and chemical products registered a year-to-year increase of 27.4% and mining production of 1%, thanks to a 22.7% jump in non-metallic mining.

Coronavirus keeps 2,300 containers with Chilean fruit stranded in China

Chilean Agriculture Minister Antonio Walker confirmed that to date there are already 2,300 containers with Chilean fruit stranded in China as a result of the coronavirus, although the cargo is in good condition. Trade has reactivated after the New Year holidays but is much slower and today 100 containers are opened per day against 200 before. In addition, e-commerce grew between 40% and 50%, because people try not to go out which makes direct sale in markets more difficult.

Chilean economy will slow down “drastically” in 2020, cenbank VP

The Chilean economy will slow down drastically in 2020 and inflation in Q3 and Q4 will be close to 4%, said Vice President of Chile Central Bank, Joaquín Vial, during a seminar at the headquarters of the Central Bank of Spain in Madrid. He estimated that core inflation will increase to just over 3.5% in mid-year in response to the depreciation of the peso. GDP in 2020 will be between 0.5% and 1.5%. He also analysed the impact of social unrest at the end of last year on the country economy.

My name is Jose R. Lobo. I've lived in the UK since 1997 when I moved from my birthplace in Argentina after obtaining my degrees in Linguistics (Spanish and Literature), History and Broadcasting and acquiring a wide range of experience as a journalist, radio and TV presenter and producer, in PR, and in teaching (high schools and two universities).
Once arrived in London, and after a brief period lecturing Spanish at Kingston University, I was hired by the BBC World Service as a Translator/Presenter first, and a few months later as a Radio and Online Producer of the Spanish American Service.
Those eleven years working in a bilingual newsroom every single day with colleagues from every single Spanish speaking country from the Americas and Spain, have been an invaluable contribution to my linguistics skills.
It is difficult to describe the intense atmosphere of a newsroom when debating on the most appropriate word or idiom for the general understanding of a multifaceted Spanish community all over the world, especially when there are a few seconds left for going live with a breaking news. I truly enjoyed -I still do- the adrenaline of working under pressure followed by the satisfaction of finishing the day having fulfilled the several deadlines there are in broadcasting and news online. On the other hand, I learned so much about my native language by being part of that team. My permanent gratitude to my colleagues, indeed.
With a much smaller team, but the same possibilities of working with people from many countries and cultures, I held a similar position for nearly two years at the UN Radio, Department of Public Information of the United Nations in New York.
Freelancing
For the last ten years I have been working as a Freelance Voice Over Talent, Translator, Subtitler/Captionist, Interpreter, Tennis Commentator, and News and Features Writer for several agencies, companies and international organisations, including the International Tennis Federation (Spanish websites of the Davis Cup and Fed Cub), the Rugby World Cup, Perform Group, Mosoj ESG Intelligence (writing in English daily financial news bulletins on Argentina, Chile and Brazil), Guide ID (audiotours), and the American online magazine Azure, amongst others.
I carried out my first translation work in 1997, when as a volunteer for the Fairtrade Foundation, I translated a 50-page report about the conditions of coffee producers in Latin America entitled "Spilling the Beans". A true challenge from the very beginning. How to come out with a title respectful of the meaning of such an idiom and at the same time able to play with the ambiguity of the words in Spanish?
Moving from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English has become a second nature in these 23 years of my life with further studies and courses on areas of social sciences that I love such as politics, sociology, behavioural economics, philosophy, psychology, pedagogy, health care, therapies of all kind, medical interpreting and, of course, sports, especially tennis.
Needless to say that I have been and I want to always be learning and adapting to new technologies and production systems. However, I still believe that humans will always be much better suited for all linguistics tasks.
