English to Afrikaans: Have you spoken to your staff about their annual shutdown leave? General field: Bus/Financial Detailed field: Human Resources
Source text - English Have you spoken to your staff about their annual shutdown leave?
COVID-19 has left many people without enough leave days to cover their companies’ annual shutdown periods in December and January.
Do you know you can let your staff take leave on credit?
The employees can then reduce their negative leave balances when they start working again. i.e., “one day of annual leave on full remuneration for every 17 days on which the employee worked or was entitled to be paid” (as per Basic Conditions of Employment Act).
An employee might leave the company before wiping out his or her negative leave balance, but it could be worth taking the risk.
Other alternatives for staff without enough leave credits:
• Organise work for them.
• Use the period for training.
• Let them work from home if possible.
Key to good workplace relations is to plan and communicate with your staff ahead of time to find the best solutions for the company and employees. It must be in line with legislation and signed by all parties.
