My name is Silvia Mejía and I grew up in Quito, Ecuador. While Spanish is my first language, I have a near-native command of English, and I am also proficient in French. For almost a decade I worked as a professional journalist in Ecuador, France, and the United States. Currently, I am an associate professor of Spanish and teach advanced literature, film, and culture courses, as well as intermediate and beginner level classes. As a former journalist and college professor who teaches Spanish language and culture to English speakers, I “live” in both languages and have been translating most of my professional life. I translate other authors' texts so that I can quote them in my own scholarly work in Spanish or English; I review colleague's translations; I correct and grade my students' translations... In other words, I literally translate for a living, although only recently I decided to seek more specialized training and began working as a professional translator. |
