La onicomicosis es una infección en las uñas causada por hongos que puede presentarse tanto en las uñas de las manos como de los pies, pero en la mayoría de los casos aparece en estos últimos. Es una patología frecuente y contagiosa que aunque no suele producir grandes molestias iniciales, afecta a la estética de las uñas, haciéndolas parecer más gruesas y con un color amarillento que puede oscurecerse a medida que avanza la infección.
Si la onicomicosis es tratada en su primera fase, los resultados suelen ser muy buenos y las uñas afectadas se recuperan completamente. No obstante, debido a que los hongos en las uñas no causan molestias severas en un inicio, son muchas las personas que no acuden al médico hasta que la infección se expande y, por ende, su tratamiento y desaparición son más complicados. Una micosis avanzada puede llegar a causar el desprendimiento total de la uña, provocar dolor crónico de difícil solución e infectar a otras uñas, de ahí la importancia de diagnosticarla cuanto antes y tratarla de forma temprana.

Onychomycose is een nagelinfectie die veroorzaakt wordt door schimmels die zowel de vinger- als de teennagels kunnen aantasten, maar doet zich het meest voor bij de teennagels. Het is een veel voorkomende en besmettelijke aandoening die in het begin weinig hinder veroorzaakt, maar de nagels cosmetisch aantast in de vorm van verdikking en verkleuring, van gelig naar steeds donkerder naarmate de infectie voortduurt.
Als onychomycose in een vroeg stadium behandeld wordt, zijn de resultaten normaliter bevredigend en kunnen de aangedane nagels volledig herstellen. Doordat de aandoening in het begin weinig klachten geeft, gaan de meeste mensen pas naar een arts als de infectie zich flink heeft uitgebreid. Behandeling en genezing worden daardoor veel gecompliceerder. Wanneer sprake is van mycose in een vergevorderd stadium kan de nagel in zijn geheel loslaten. Dit kan chronische pijn veroorzaken die moeilijk te behandelen is, en mogelijk kunnen ook andere, gezonde nagels worden geïnfecteerd. Het is daarom van belang de diagnose in een vroeg stadium te kunnen stellen om zo snel mogelijk meteen behandeling te beginnen.
