European High Yield Bond Fund
The fund seeks to preserve shareholder capital and to provide a return exceeding the average return of the European high yield bond market.¹
Portfolio comment as of 31/01/2019
European High Yield spreads tightened with 55bps from 520bps to 465bps during the month of January. This led to the strongest monthly performance for European High Yield since July 2016.
Despite the tightening in spreads in January, the current spread-to-worst remains at attractive levels. With historical low default rates, 0.4% in 2018, Europe looks relatively attractive compared to the US market, where the default rate for 2018 was 2.3% and the quality of the high yield market generally is lower. Despite the increased risk in US high yield, the spread difference between the two markets is limited.
The volatile end to 2018 has meant that new issue activity has been limited in 2019 for high yield. We expect activity in the primary market to increase once the markets become less volatile.
In this context, the fund delivered a monthly return equal to 2.53%, bringing YTD performance to 2.53% (BP-EUR).
The fund outperformed its benchmark in January. The majority of the outperformance was due to strong security selection, but industry allocation also contributed positively.
The positive contribution from security selection was a result of strong selection across a number of different industries but was most notable within Banks, Telecom and Capital Goods. Within Telecom the large underweight in Telecom Italia was a very significant contributor to performance as the bonds performed poorly on the back of a profit warning.
The positive contribution from industry allocation was primarily due to a large overweight in Healthcare which was the second-best performing industry in the benchmark.

Les spreads des obligations européennes à haut rendement se sont resserrés de 55bps, passant de 520bps à 465bps au cours du mois de janvier. Cela a conduit à la plus forte performance mensuelle pour le haut rendement européen depuis juillet 2016.
Malgré le resserrement des spreads en janvier, le spread-to-worst actuel reste à des niveaux attractifs. Avec des taux de défaut historiquement bas, 0,4 % en 2018, l'Europe semble relativement attractif par rapport au marché américain, où le taux de défaut pour 2018 était de 2,3 % et où la qualité du marché du haut rendement est généralement plus faible. Malgré le risque accru du haut rendement américain, la différence de spread entre les deux marchés est limitée.

La contribution positive de la sélection de titres est le résultat d'une forte sélection dans un certain nombre de secteurs différents, mais elle a été plus marquée dans les secteurs des banques, des télécommunications et des biens d'équipement. Au sein du secteur des télécommunications, la forte sous-pondération de Telecom Italia a contribué de manière très significative à la performance, les obligations ayant enregistré de mauvaises performances à la suite d'un avertissement sur les bénéfices.
La contribution positive de l'allocation sectorielle est principalement due à une forte surpondération du secteur de la santé, qui a été le deuxième secteur le plus performant de l'indice de référence
