A STARTING GUIDE
GENERAL DO'S AND DON'TS
Do get to know colleagues as people and professionals.
Don't assume other people's wants or needs.
Do use respectful language:
Example:
“uses a wheelchair” rather than “is confined to a wheelchair” and “accessible” rather than “handicapped.”
PEOPLE WITH MOBILITY DISABILITIES
Don't touch a person's mobility equipment without their permission.
Don’t invade the personal space of a person who uses a mobility device.
Put yourself at the person's eye level when engaging in a conversation rather than kneeling; pull up a chair.
Don’t make comments about your toes, their arms, or the potential of engaging in a race when talking to a person who uses a wheelchair. | Translation - Karen
