Personal Background

My name is Anders Haugen. I'm 30 years old and I'm a Norwegian citizen. I've had a longstanding love for languages for as long as I can remember, and these were the subjects I excelled at most in school. This lead me to do a Bachelor's Degree in linguistics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.

As part of my degree I gain a deep understanding of languages, having modules such as phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and phonetics. My minor subject was Swahili, where I had an introduction to the Swahili language, as well as the Swahili history and culture.

After University I held a job as a bartender/waiter for eight years. I learned a lot about customer service throughout this time, as well as working well in teams, especially during stressful working hours. The bar I worked at specialized on whisky and aquavit, so I have extensive knowledge of these types of spirits (Especially whisky). I also have a good knowledge of wine and beer as well. I worked with and met many chefs in the industry as well and gained extensive knowledge in food as well.

During this time I also took on a One-year Programme in French at the same university as my Bachelor's Degree. I had already had French at the Norwegian equivalent of high school, and my goal with this year was to hone my skills in French and use it to gain access to a potential degree in translation.

This worked out and I was accepted into a Post-graduate Degree in Translation Studies at Dublin City University. I had already learned a few basics to the craft before heading in, but at the university I had extensive training with CAT-tools, and I have gained decent knowledge with quite a few. I consider Trados my main tool.

As a part of this degree, I had French as a working language, where I had two modules for translating French: Economics and Technical.

My native language is Norwegian (Bokmål) and as a translator I work with English and French as source languages.

Fields of Interest

  • I'm an avid gamer and would love to work with anything relating to video games.
  • I read a lot of books, mostly fiction and many genres, but I love the fantasy genre.
  • I watch a ton of movies and TV-shows in just about every genre.
  • I've always loved geography, and I'm pretty good at countries' flags, languages and demographics.
  • I've got a decent knowledge of history, and I love reading about it.
  • I also enjoy cooking, and I'm very interested in the culinary cultures of different countries and people.

Professional Experience

During my Post-graduate Degree in Translation Studies I had a module called Simulated Translation Bureau where we made faux companies that had to get clients and work on their projects. For this module, I translated a medical journal, subtitled a series of YouTube videos, translated a dataset on cyber-bullying and I translated a Wikipedia-page.

I have submitted proposals for Norwegian translations on Valve's Crowdin Server for a little over a year now on a voluntary basis. Mostly for the video games Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2.

Although my professional experience is limited at this point, I am passionate about my love of languages and I can promise that I will endeavor to produce flawless translations that will meet your needs and preferences.

Cost

The fee for my service is agreed with each client according to their needs and
expectations.

Final words

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to work with me. I'm incredibly excited for new opportunities and challenges.
