Source text - English Dafür müsste sich aber nicht nur die Experimentelle Archäologie sondern das ganze Fach anders aufstellen, oder?
Mamoun Fansa: Ja genau. Was uns in der Vor- und Frühgeschichte insgesamt noch fehlt, ist die verstärkte Zusammenarbeit mit den Nachbardisziplinen. In unserem Fachgebiet ist wenig durch schriftliche Quellen belegt und so müssen wir uns verschiedener Methoden wie eben der Experimentellen Archäologie bedienen. Aber eigentlich müsste es noch viel weiter gehen. In den Hochkulturen Mesopotamiens und Ägyptens haben wir viele schriftliche Quellen, die Produkte oder technische Prozesse erläutern. Wir müssten daher auch auf diese Fächer schauen.
Aber eine solche Verzahnung mit anderen Fächern oder zumindest die Nutzung ihrer Erkenntnisse fehlt bei uns in der Vor- und Frühgeschichte Europas, genauso wie die Verbindung mit den Naturwissenschaften und anderen Disziplinen, die uns mehr Auswertungsmöglichkeiten liefern. Ich behaupte ja – und da werde ich von manchen Archäologen angegriffen –, dass Archäologie eigentlich gar keine selbstständige Wissenschaft in dem Sinne ist, weil sie nur von den Methoden der Nachbarwissenschaften und Naturwissenschaften lebt.
Schauen Sie, meiner Ansicht nach haben wir überhaupt gar keine eigenen Methoden. Alle, die wir verwenden, kommen aus anderen Fächern. Ob das nun die Typologie betrifft, die aus der Kunstgeschichte und der Biologie stammt oder die C14-Methode, die aus der Geophysik und die Dendrochronologie, die aus der Biologie kommt. Dabei können wir durch die Unterstützung anderer Fächer die Erkenntnisse der Archäologie in Mitteleuropa viel besser interpretieren und darstellen.
Und die Experimentelle Archäologie? Nun, wir haben uns in den letzten 25 Jahren sehr viel damit beschäftigt, welchen Regeln ein Experiment in der Archäologie zu folgen hat. Für mich gelten da strenge Maßstäbe, wie ein Experiment zu funktionieren hat. Wer das nicht berücksichtigt, kann seine Ergebnisse vernachlässigen. Teilweise sind das sehr gute Experimente und ich kann das gar nicht kritisieren. Aber es fehlt eben noch der letzte Schritt: Wie binde ich das in die Geschichte oder in die Gesamtforschung in der Archäologie ein?

Mamoun Fansa: Exactly. What is missing in the greater understanding of Pre- and Early History is the collaboration of the neighboring disciplines. There are only few written sources in our area of expertise and therefore we have to use various methods such as “Experimental Archeology”. But we should also look at the early advanced civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt where a lot of written sources exist which explain products and technical processes.
Such interactions with other disciplines or the broader use of their knowledge is missing in Europe's Pre- and Early History as well as the connection with natural sciences which would supply more evaluation possibilities. It is my opinion, despite the fact that other archaeologists don't agree with me, that Archeology is not really an independent science because it benefits only from other sciences.
We don't have methods of our own at all. For example, typology originates from biology and art history; the C14-method originates from geophysics and the dendrochronology which originates from biology. Thereby the support of other disciplines could enhance the knowledge of the middle European archeology and help with better presentations and interpretations.
And Experimental Archeology? We dedicated the last 25 years to establishing what rules an archeological experiment has to follow. Which I consider are strict rules for how an experiment has to function. If one does not adhere to these rules the results can be rejected.
Even though there are good experiments, there is one last step missing: how do I integrate this into history or overall related archaeological research?
