Bio
From the humble beginnings of my academic journey, a peculiar interest had nestled in my heart, one that combined the mesmerizing beauty of language and the decisive power of economics. My name is Jiabing Li, a unique composite major in Russian and Finance at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), one of the most international-orientated and leading linguistic research universities in China. I am aspiring to find a part-time job with the following highlights of my life journey:
(1) Intuitive Curiosity, Comparative Mindset and Exceptional Talent to Pick Up New Langauge.
When we started to pick up English as a foreign language, most of my classmates just worked hard on memorizing the vocabulary without thinking much. However, I was obsessed with the linguistic theory for the similarities and differences between Chinese and English. Such insights unlocked my appreciation of languages as vehicles for thought, shaping my ability to perceive and integrate new languages seamlessly. Afterward, it seemed to be effortless for me to pick up a new language and pave my path to the unique composite major of Russian and Finance in BFSU, whereby we not only studied Russian as a foreign langauge, but also deep dived into Russian financial terms, international trade rules and contracts in the context of Russian.
(2) Profound Social, Cultural and Institutional Perspective Driven by Multiple Foreign Language Studies:
Russian might be an unconventional pick nowadays but I could not be more grateful for such a choice. As very well put by the theory of Linguistic Relativity (or the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis) suggesting that the structure of a language affects its speakers’ worldview or cognition, the exposure to Russian as an inflectional language at BFSU facilitated my further learning of German and Dutch.
Putting such diversified language under the linguistic theoretical framework served as a more representative pool of samples to strengthen and validate my methodology and, more importantly, sparked an intellectual inquiry: if different language patterns yield different patterns of thought, whether or how the language people communicate as an individual would determine the way they connect as a society culturally and legally? The exploration along such a fascinating question mark has endowed me with an interesting while overlooked perspective to understand the common fundamentals underneath the highly diversified social and legal mechanisms in different cultures.
(3) Excellent Quantitative and Interdisciplinary Skills and Economics Knowledge:
If humankind can carry the world by two and only two vehicles, that could only be “words” and “numbers”. Apart from my excellence in the “words“ discussed above, I also mastered stage-of-the-art quantitative knowledge and toolbox via a variety of high-scored finance and economics classes (Monetary Finance, International Finance, Corporate Governance and Econometric Applications), self-studying CFA Level 1, expertise with fundamental financial mechanism driving cross border transactions, such as equity investment, fixed income investment, portfolio management, derivatives investment and alternative investment, etc.
Among others, the most handsome reward would be my exchange experience in the Business Valuation Program of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore (NTU) under the guidance of Dr. Teoh Teik Toe, the Associate Director of NTU Business AI Lab. During the intense research, I used Python to collect financial data of five listed companies in the United States (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, collectively FAAMG) and completed the construction of a valuation model and its front-end and back-end development, using Jupyter Notebook and Power BI.
With hundreds and thousands of lines of code being written, we managed to leverage this model to conduct a preliminary analysis of the operating profitability and future expectations of FAAMG. Later, after aggregating and cleaning all the data, we made use of Orange to visualize the data obtained. Finally, we completed the final report in English and received positive feedback from all the professors. By virtue of such outstanding performance, we also received letters of recommendation from Dr. Teoh Teik Toe.
I sincerely look forward to working with you.
Kind regards,
Raisa Lee
