⚖️ *BODY* Mass Index
*If you're diabetic, you need to watch your body weight ⚖️ to control your condition*.
🏥 Your healthcare provider can advise you about your weight and tell you if you're a healthy weight or not. To do this, they often make a calculation called the Body Mass Index (BMI), which tells you what weight you should be for your height.👍🏾
Your Mentor Mother will be available to calculate your Body Mass Index with you and provide you with support. She can also refer and link you to a healthcare provider if you need extra help to manage your weight ⚖️ and health.
🍎 *When you're diabetic, daily blood sugar checks can give you a good idea of how you're doing*. They help you know if your medication is working, if you're eating the right foods; and if your activities and stress level are affecting your blood sugar.
To check your blood sugar level, get your blood glucose meter, a test strip and your lancing device. See how to prepare the meter and test strip, lance your finger and get a reading using the blood glucose meter.
The steps are the same for many meters, and generally look like this:
👍🏾 Wash and dry your hands - using warm water may help the blood flow.
👍🏾 Turn on the meter and prepare a test strip as outlined in your owner's booklet.
👍🏾 Choose your spot - don't use the same finger all the time. Using the side of the fingertip may be less painful than the pads.
👍🏾 Prepare the lancing device according to the user guide, then lance your fingertip to get a drop of blood.
👍🏾 Touch and hold the test strip opening to the drop until it has absorbed enough blood to begin the test.
👍🏾 Look at your test result. If your blood sugar is high or low, do what your healthcare provider has told you to do.
👍🏾 Discard the used lancet properly.
Write down the results in a simple notebook you buy to monitor your health. 📔 Your Mentor Mother will look at your results with you when she calls you or visits you at your home.
❤️ *Hypertension (high blood pressure or BP) is a common condition*. Having high blood pressure puts extra strain on your heart and blood vessels, and can cause serious problems if you don't get treatment. These include stroke, heart failure, heart attack, and kidney damage.
People with high blood pressure usually don't feel unwell. Many people only find out they have high blood pressure during a standard medical check. *If you haven't had your blood pressure checked for a while, go to the clinic for a check*. 🏥
🤔 No one knows exactly what causes hypertension. Some people get it because of an unhealthy lifestyle, or because there is a family history (a mother, father, brother, sister has hypertension). Other risk factors include being overweight, not taking exercise, eating salty foods and unhealthy foods.
*You can get hypertension during pregnancy*. 🤰🏽You need to manage it carefully for the health of both you and your baby. Once you deliver, the problem will soon go away, but is more likely to return when you get older.

😊 *If you have hypertension (high blood pressure or BP), you can have a good quality of life and few or no health problems*. But there are times in your life when your condition needs to be controlled using medication. This can only be decided by your healthcare provider.
When you are given hypertension medicine by your healthcare provider, take it every day as directed. You must take your medicine properly, regularly, and stay on the treatment you were given. Hypertension is treated with pills. 💊
If you have high BP, you will need to have your BP checked regularly. 🔴 Take your BP medicine every day, exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
*don't stop taking your medicine without speaking to your healthcare provider*. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, only take the usual dose. Do not take double the medicine dosage. Take your medicines even when your blood pressure comes down.
😊 *The good news is that you can make positive choices to change your lifestyle*. Sometimes you can go back to not needing BP medicine. Only your healthcare provider can make this decision. Keep taking your medicine, unless your healthcare provider advises differently.
*When you have a chronic illness, you need new ways of living and strategies to manage your condition*. 📝
Many self-management programmes are run in groups 👭 so that you can share your experiences, learn from one another and get healthy together. Your Mentor Mother will tell you about the benefits of these groups and help you join a support group that’s convenient for where you live and your schedule.
🌽 *Healthy eating* is an important part of self-management for hypertension.
❌ 🧂 Add very little salt to the foods you eat and try not to eat foods high in salt. Eating too much salt is a risk factor for increasing your high blood pressure. Your body needs a small amount of salt from food to keep you healthy. Eat less than 5 grams (less than a teaspoon) a day.
❌🍬 Add very little sugar to the foods you eat and try not to have foods and drinks containing large amounts of sugar. Sugar can be enjoyed as part of a healthy eating plan with limited use. If you eat too much if can lead to weight gain.
💦 *Drink 6-8 glasses of clean and safe water* throughout the day. Avoid drinking sugary drinks including sweetened and flavoured water, as it leads to too much sugar and weight gain.
♀️ *Exercise every day* for at least 30 minutes. You can do fast walking in your neighborhood, walk up and down steps, play active games, dance, do household chores, backyard gardening, fetch water or play ball with your children.

📊 Your BP is above normal when readings range from 120-129 systolic and are less than 80 mm Hg diastolic. If your BP is above normal you may develop high BP unless you take steps to control your condition.
Use a digital monitor for self-monitoring. *Before you check your BP*:
👍🏾 Wait 30 minutes after eating or drinking coffee, alcohol or smoking cigarettes.
👍🏾 Go to the bathroom and pee.
👍🏾 Rest for 3-5 minutes and don't talk.
*When you're ready*:
👍🏾 Sit in a comfortable position, with your legs and ankles uncrossed and your back supported.
👍🏾 Raise your left arm to the level of your heart. Place it on a table and sit still.
👍🏾 Wrap the cuff around the upper part of your bare arm. Keep it smooth and snug, with enough room to slip one fingertip under it. The bottom edge should be 1 inch above the crease of your elbow.
👍🏾 Look at the display screen to get your BP reading. Write down the measurement in your record. The systolic pressure goes in front of the diastolic pressure, e.g. 120/80.
👍🏾 If you need to repeat the measurement, wait 2-3 minutes before starting.
