Translation - English The city of Aquileia rapidly developed into a commercial centre, port, and military base. Under Augustus it became the capital of X Regio Venetia et Histria (the 10th Roman Region), an area which stretched from Lombardy to Slovenia, and provided the starting point for subsequent Roman expansion into the Danubian lands and the Balkans. A major transport and communications hub, the region benefited from an extensive network of roads connecting the main routes between Italy and the transalpine territories. The agrarian and residential organization of the territory, which was divided according to the centuriation system with plots being allocated to coliniae - colonies or settlements which usually consisted of veteran legionnaires, their families and their slaves – promoted economic growth and brought great prosperity to the region.
