Source text - English As an environmental historian, I approach
long-term, multiscalar thinking through
long-lived trees. They are hyperlocals,
ultraterrestrials, and supermortals all at
once. To play with Einsteinian language:
these plants exist in placetime. They allow a
story in which time operates at multiple
speeds at once—the speeds of geology,
evolution, and history. Old species have
lived through many planets, one place at a
time. They are the long ago here. Current
old specimens have recorded in their rings
the revolution of anthropogenic climate
forcing. These keepers of time allow me to
narrate the remote, abstract scale of the
carbon cycle alongside the intimate,
material scale of the churchyard. Each of
my chapters shifts between the micro
(hyperlocal plants and their ecosystems),
the meso (empires, states, nations,
bioregions), and the macro (the
biosphere). Across temporalties, I bring
plants and peoples together to show global
connections and planetary consequences.

tempo. Queste piante esistono nel
luogotempo, per dirla un po’ alla Einstein.
Esse permettono la narrazione di una storia
dove il tempo opera contemporaneamente
a più velocità: la velocità della geologia,
dell'evoluzione e della storia. Le specie
antiche hanno vissuto su molti pianeti, un
luogo alla volta. Sono qui da sempre. Gli
anelli degli esemplari oggi definiti antichi
hanno registrato la rivoluzione del forzante
radiativo antropogenico. Questi custodi del
tempo mi permettono una narrazione che
spazia dalla dimensione remota e astratta
del ciclo del carbone a quella materiale e
intima del camposanto. Ogni capitolo oscilla
tra il micro (piante iperlocali e i loro
ecosistemi), il meso (imperi, stati, nazioni,
bioregioni) e il macro (la biosfera).
Attraverso le temporalità, metto insieme
piante e popoli per mostrare connessioni
globali e conseguenze planetarie.
