With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and the committed new District Attorney, Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham City for good. The triumvirate initially proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces The Dark Knight ever closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.
Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger (“Brokeback Mountain”) portrays arch-villain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays District Attorney Harvey Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast in the role of Rachel Dawes. Returning from “Batman Begins” are Gary Oldman as Lieutenant Jim Gordon; Oscar winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”) as Alfred; and Oscar winner Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) as Lucius Fox.

Six sequences of “The Dark Knight” were filmed with IMAX® cameras, including the opening six minutes. With “Batman Begins,” writer/director Christopher Nolan opened a new chapter in the Batman film franchise by taking the legendary character back to his origins, re-imagining why and how the billionaire industrialist Bruce Wayne became the enigmatic crime fighter known to the world as Batman. In “The Dark Knight” Nolan returns to the Batman saga with the character now, in the director’s words, “fully formed.”
Nolan continues, “I thought we left the world of Batman at an interesting place in the first film, and the end suggested an intriguing direction in which the story could continue.” Nolan developed the story with David S. Goyer, with whom he had collaborated on the screenplay for “Batman Begins.” Nolan and his brother, Jonathan, then partnered on the screenplay for “The Dark Knight.”
In “The Dark Knight,” Nolan says he focused more on how Batman’s very existence has changed Gotham City…and not, at least initially, for the better. “At the end of ‘Batman Begins,’ we hinted at the threat of escalation—that in going after the city’s crime cartels and attacking their interests, Batman could provoke an even greater response from the criminal community and now that has come to pass. There are some very negative consequences of his crusade brewing in Gotham City.”
Producer Charles Roven offers that the issue extends beyond Gotham’s resident criminals. “On the one hand, Batman has begun to rid Gotham of the crime and corruption that has plagued the city, but, ironically, the vacuum he created draws in an even more powerful criminal element, who see it as their chance to take over the city.”
Producer Emma Thomas notes, “In ‘Batman Begins’ we largely concentrated on the origins of the character—how Batman evolved out of Bruce Wayne’s own early trauma, his fears, his anger and, finally, his resolve to fight crime and corruption. In ‘The Dark Knight,’ Batman has become well-known to the police and citizens of Gotham City, but while some consider him a hero, others wonder if he is doing more harm than good. And the arrival of a new kind of criminal raises the stakes on that debate.
“What’s intriguing,” Thomas adds, “is that the billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne—with his fabulous cars, a beautiful woman on each arm and not a care in the world—is not at all who this man really is. So while Bruce Wayne wears a mask to hide his identity as Batman, it is actually Batman who defines Bruce’s true identity, and the public persona of Bruce Wayne is the ‘mask’ he wears to co-exist in this world.”
It didn’t start out that way. Returning to the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, Christian Bale asserts, “I believe Bruce thought it would be a finite thing, that Batman would serve as an inspiration to Gotham City and that he would eventually be able to leave this character he conceived behind. But he is coming to understand, more and more, that this is not something he can easily walk away from now…or possibly ever. There are new enemies to protect the city from.”
The most dangerous of these enemies is Batman’s most infamous nemesis—a maniacal, remorseless fiend known as The Joker. “The Joker is the ultimate screen arch-villain,” Nolan attests. “In his own way, The Joker is as much an icon as The Dark Knight is, and that presented us with both an opportunity and a challenge in terms of exploring the character’s distorted point of view. But we also wanted to create a villain who, as colorful and outrageous as he is, is still coming from a place of reality. In keeping with the tone we established in ‘Batman Begins,’ we determined he is a pretty serious guy, despite being called The Joker. So we began with the notion of The Joker as the most extreme form of anarchist—a force of chaos, a purposeless criminal who is not out for anything and, so, can’t be understood. He is not only a massively destructive force, but he also takes great delight in his murderous nature, which is a pretty terrifying spectacle.
“As the screenplay developed,” Nolan continues, “we started to explore the effect one guy could have on an entire population—the ways in which he could upset the balance for people, the ways in which he could take their rules for living, their ethics, their beliefs, their humanity and turn them on themselves. You could say we’ve seen echoes of that in our own world, which has led me to believe that anarchy and chaos—even the threat of anarchy and chaos—are among the most frightening things society faces, especially in this day and age.”
“The Joker is somebody without any rules whatsoever,” Bale states. “How do you fight somebody who is bent on destruction, even if it means self-destruction? That’s a formidable foe.” The actor goes on to say that The Joker’s total lack of morality is one of his most potent weapons in his war with Batman because, conversely, “Batman has a very strict moral code for what he will and won’t do, and The Joker can use that to his advantage. Batman still has this huge reserve of anger and pain and knows he could easily go too far, so he must not cross that line. He has to be sure that in chasing a monster, he doesn’t become a monster himself. Chris Nolan has raised interesting ethical questions in this movie about the complications of having power versus aspiring to power.”
Bale, who counts “The Dark Knight” as his third collaboration with Nolan, adds, “I think Chris has a great talent for satisfying the need for a rollercoaster ride, for just being purely entertained, without forgoing moments of great personal conflict and the duality within the characters. He manages to do both without compromising either.”
While The Joker wreaks chaos and fear, the crusading District Attorney Harvey Dent is the new face of law and order in Gotham City. “Harvey is a man of the people. He’s an all-American hero in a very different way from Batman,” says Nolan. “So now you have the triumvirate of Batman, Harvey Dent and Lieutenant Gordon—the justice system, the police and a vigilante—forming an alliance to bring down crime. Using Batman gives them an edge over the criminals, but it is still the police who will arrest them, and then they will be tried through the justice system. But what comes up is the question of whether you can bend the rules without breaking them. And that becomes the underlying theme of the story.”
The dynamic between the three crime fighters changes abruptly when an unforeseeable turn of events destroys the steadfast DA Harvey Dent and gives rise to the vengeful villain Two-Face. Nolan comments, “The hope that Harvey represents to Gotham City and then the tragedy of what happens to him and his transformation into Two-Face…it’s a remarkable story.”
The director observes, “The Joker is the more flamboyant villain, so he commands attention. But in some ways Harvey Dent/Two Face is the more compelling character because he has such an amazing arc. Our Joker has no arc, per se; he’s just hell-bent throughout. The Joker and Harvey Dent—these are two of the most fascinating characters from the Batman comic books. They have an almost mythic quality and it was exciting to view them through the prism of the world we created.”
In a groundbreaking move, Nolan broadened the scope of that world with a filmmaking first. Nolan shot six major action sequences with IMAX cameras, becoming the first director to use the large-format cameras to film even a portion of a traditional feature film. “In continuing Batman’s story, the challenge was to make things bigger and better—to expand the world we established in the first film, both through the story and in the way we presented it,” he states. “I was thrilled with the way the IMAX photography turned out. It throws the audience right into the action in a way no other film format could. It takes me back to when I was a kid going to the movies and experiencing the scope, the scale and the grandeur that great cinema can offer. As a filmmaker, I think you’re always trying to get back to that, and expanding the canvas of our story with IMAX seemed a great way to do it.”
The filmmakers have also made several changes to the world of Batman: Bruce Wayne’s familial home, Wayne Manor, burned to the ground at the end of “Batman Begins,” so Bruce now resides in a modern penthouse overlooking the city. Batman also has a newly designed Batsuit, which gives him more range of motion and a greater field of vision—“I can turn my head,” Bale smiles. And the agile and powerful Bat-Pod makes its much-anticipated debut as The Dark Knight weaves through Gotham City traffic in a pulse-pounding chase sequence filmed on the streets of Chicago.
Batman’s pursuit of justice also takes him on an odyssey halfway across the world to Hong Kong, marking the first time The Caped Crusader has left the confines of Gotham City on screen.
“Chris had a wonderful overall vision of what he wanted to achieve with this film, and he was able to accomplish that and more,” says Roven. “He’s one of those rare directors who, when he tells you what he’s trying to do, no matter how ambitious, you can rely on the fact that he will do it, usually even better than you imagined.”
“You either die a hero…
or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”
“The Dark Knight” reunites several members of the ensemble cast from “Batman Begins,” leading with Christian Bale in the title role. Bale says he welcomed the opportunity to once again inhabit the solitary figure, who has had to relinquish much of his personal identity for the greater good. He offers, “Bruce is certainly sacrificing, both mentally and physically, as a consequence of this character of Batman whom he has unleashed and now is unable to rein in anymore. More than a persona, he has created a symbol, and that symbol can’t have limits. He can’t show weakness ever. So you have the conflict between what is good for Bruce Wayne and what is the right thing for Batman to do, because the two of them are not always compatible.”
“Working with Christian is a joy and just a lot of fun. He is a very engaging presence to have on the set,” says Nolan. “He also has an intensity about him; he is incredibly focused on tapping into the psychological reality of whatever character he’s playing. He applies the same disciplined approach to finding the truth of that character and sticks to it. That is a great help to me as a filmmaker because I know he is prepared and has a handle on how his character is going to move through the story. In fact, he has a lot of the same qualities that Bruce Wayne brings to bear in changing himself from an ordinary man into this extraordinary crime-fighting figure.”
“Christian brought everything to his performance that you could want for the character—the stature, the emotional resonance, the complexity,” Roven states. “It was amazing to be on the set watching him. He took his role to another level in this film.”
Nolan adds that although Bale portrays the same character in “The Dark Knight” that he did in “Batman Begins,” the two films presented the actor with very different challenges. “On ‘Batman Begins,’ it was a lot of physical effort—he had to get himself in terrific shape and learn all kinds of skills in terms of the way Batman fights, the way he moves. On this film, I would say it required more of an internal process because Bruce is realizing the personal toll of living this double life and is questioning the choices he’s made. Christian conveys that emotional struggle very convincingly, often without saying a word.”
Nevertheless, the role of Batman has an inherent physicality, so Bale immersed himself in a refresher course on the Keysi Fighting Method (KFM) that Batman employs against his enemies. A relatively young martial arts discipline, KFM is an intuitive fighting method with a strong emphasis on mental focus, but Bale also had to be in peak physical condition. He trained with Keysi fight coordinators Andy Norman and Justo Dieguez for two to three hours every day. “In KFM, you learn to develop every part of your body as a weapon, and it’s not easy,” Norman relates. “We worked Christian extremely hard, and it was fantastic how quickly he absorbed everything. There was a definite progression in his training since the first film. He understands KFM a lot better, so he was more powerful and his movement was incredible.”
“It’s a fascinating fighting method,” says Bale, “because it uses the adrenaline that everyone feels entering into a threatening or violent situation. It really comes from the gut. Rather than the kind of Zen calm that some martial arts call on, KFM is based on animal instinct and honing those instincts to be lethal, so it’s perfect for Batman.”
But The Dark Knight is about to confront a singular criminal called The Joker, who has little regard for Keysi or any other fighting method. In a fair fight, “Batman would obliterate him,” Bale asserts, “but The Joker doesn’t fight fair. He has other tricks up his sleeve, so it’s more of a mind game. But he finds in Batman a very worthy opponent, and I think he enjoys that.”
Heath Ledger plays the role of The Joker, the malevolent clown who is arguably the most recognizable of Batman’s arch-nemeses. In casting the part, Nolan says that the defining quality he was looking for “was fearlessness. I needed a phenomenal actor, but he also had to be someone unafraid of taking on such an iconic role. Heath created something entirely original. It’s stunning, it’s captivating…it’s going to blow people away.”
The director recalls that he first met with Ledger about the role even before there was a script. “We talked about how we saw this character and we both had exactly the same concept—that The Joker was about the threat of anarchy and revels in creating chaos and fear on a grand scale. Heath seemed to instinctively understand how to make this character different from anything that had ever been done before.”
Roven elaborates, “The Joker is one of the great villains in comic book lore—psychopathic, enigmatic, clever, diabolical, charming, funny and completely enjoyable to watch. We knew it would take an extraordinary actor to play him and Heath delivered on every front. From every physical nuance to each vocal turn of phrase, it’s just an unforgettable performance.”
In “The Dark Knight,” The Joker arrives on the scene without warning and climbs ruthlessly to the top of Gotham City’s criminal food chain. “We never wanted to do an origin story for The Joker in this film, but we wanted to show the rise of The Joker,” Nolan maintains. “In a sense, The Joker is the logical response to Batman, who has instigated this kind of extremity of behavior in Gotham.”
Bale adds, “The Joker wants to break Batman, to prove that everybody has a price and even Batman can be leveraged in such a way that he would compromise his principles. I actually think he’s delighted to find that Batman won’t do that, and it creates for The Joker an even better opponent in this game he’s playing. He’s a fascinating character, and Heath did an extraordinary job with it. I don’t think the movie would have worked as well if we hadn’t had an actor of the caliber of Heath Ledger, who was able to really up the ante, much as The Joker does in Gotham.”
“We wanted The Joker to represent pure, unadulterated evil, in the sense that he has no logical motivation for his actions. That is what we wanted to unleash on the city of Gotham. He is an absolute,” Nolan sums up simply.
Yet, Emma Thomas is quick to note, “He is very funny. I know it sounds somewhat bizarre, because how could someone so deplorable be funny? Heath’s take on the role was not campy but still hilarious, both physically and in a dry, sardonic way. With The Joker, I think you’ll find yourself being horrified and terrified, but hugely amused at the same time.”
On the other side of the law, another figure has risen to prominence in Gotham City: Harvey Dent, the newly elected District Attorney, who is on a mission to break organized crime’s stranglehold on his beleaguered city. Harvey Dent is played by Aaron Eckhart, who offers, “Harvey has charged himself with tackling organized crime and cleaning up the streets. He is the shining new hope of Gotham City, the ‘White Knight,’ as he is called. He starts out full of optimism and enthusiasm…where he ends up is somewhere completely different,” he hints. “It’s a great role and I’m a big fan of Chris Nolan’s, so when he approached me about doing the film, it was a no-brainer.”
Nolan says that while Eckhart looks every inch the part of the handsome and charismatic DA, his reasons for casting the actor ran deeper. “We were looking for somebody who could embody that All-American charm because you have to invest in him as a very attractive, heroic figure at the beginning of the movie. But he also had to have an edge; he had to suggest this undercurrent of anger and darkness that Harvey Dent needed to have, so where he goes in the story is believable. You can’t present a character like this as simply a heroic figure with no flaws, no dark side. Aaron captured all of those qualities very, very well.”
As the new Gotham City DA, Harvey Dent not only has to contend with a rise in crime, but also with a masked vigilante known as Batman. “It’s an interesting dynamic,” Eckhart remarks, “because Harvey sees Batman fighting crime in a way that he would like to but cannot. Harvey has to stay within the boundaries of the law. He has to do overtly what Batman is doing covertly. He admires Batman’s intentions, even if he can’t publicly support his methods. But what he thinks of Bruce Wayne is quite different. He sees Bruce as nothing more than a playboy about town without any real credibility.”
“Harvey thinks Bruce is a complete upper-class twit,” Nolan affirms. “It would astonish him to find out he is really the man behind the mask.”
Dent’s opinion of his public persona notwithstanding, Bruce Wayne appreciates the new DA’s efforts on behalf of the city. Nolan comments, “It seemed most logical to us that Bruce initially saw Batman as a short-term crusade, as a symbol to inspire the good people of Gotham to take their city back. In Harvey Dent, he finally sees the response he was looking for. Harvey is the hero that Gotham needs—the hero with a face, not one wearing a mask.”
But, Thomas says, “There is a certain amount of personal opportunism going on there, as well, because if Harvey Dent can succeed, then maybe Bruce can stop being Batman. Maybe there is a world in which he can return to a normal life. There’s a big part of him that does wish he could hang up his cape. Whether Bruce would actually enjoy hanging up Batman’s cape at this point, I don’t know. I don’t think even he knows. But there is definitely a part of him that feels he has started something that has spun out of control, and Harvey Dent may be his only hope for being able to end it.”
For Bruce Wayne, a chance for a normal life also means a chance for a future with the love of his life, Rachel Dawes, who now works for Dent as an assistant district attorney. In that regard, the DA is not a hope but a hindrance, because Rachel is involved with him not only professionally but romantically, as well. “When it comes to Rachel, there is a contradiction in Bruce’s feelings about Dent. While he does respect Dent, another part of Bruce just wants to knock him out,” Bale says only half-jokingly. “So Bruce’s ideological side and his very human side are again at loggerheads with each other.”
Cast in the role of Rachel, Maggie Gyllenhaal notes, “Rachel made the heartbreaking decision that it is impossible for her to be with Bruce as long as he is Batman. Then Harvey Dent came into her life, and she is crazy about him. I think the thing she really admires about Harvey, as opposed to Batman—or, rather, what Bruce Wayne is doing as Batman—is that Harvey is not a vigilante. He is not putting himself above the law for what he believes is ultimately best for the people of Gotham City. Instead, Harvey believes in the system, even if it’s broken, and he is going to work within the system to change things that are corrupt. I think that’s why Rachel loves him and thinks he is a hero in his own way. At the same time, she still genuinely loves Bruce and she obviously knows he is still in love with her, so it’s a real predicament.
“But for me, I mean it’s Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart and they are both pretty spectacular, so as an actress, it was easy to live with that predicament,” Gyllenhaal laughs. “My wanting to be a part of this film had almost everything to do with Chris Nolan and the rest of the cast. From the beginning, Chris was so engaging and so interested in my ideas about the role. He was clear that he wanted Rachel to be smart and capable and not the damsel in distress, although she is in distress sometimes. We were really good for each other because that’s very much what I wanted, and we pushed each other in different ways to make Rachel who she is.”
“Maggie is just a fantastic actress,” states Nolan. “I’ve always loved her work and had wanted an opportunity to work with her, and the role of Rachel in this film seemed like the perfect match. Maggie has great intelligence and maturity and she is also very warm and, of course, lovely. You really believe her in this role. I think she beautifully conveyed the conflict in Rachel standing between these two men in her life, and you can see why both men would naturally be drawn to her. Rachel has so much history with Bruce and he will always be in her heart, but she also loves Harvey and can see a future with him.”
However, that all changes in an instant when a shocking incident transforms the once redoubtable Harvey Dent into the horribly deformed Two-Face, who is now bent on one thing: revenge. “Something terrible happens that alters everything in his life and rage takes over,” says Eckhart. “He takes strength from his grief and his pain and sets out to kill the bad guys…or those he now perceives as the bad guys. He still wants justice, but now he pursues it outside of the law he once lived by. I don’t think of him purely as a villain in the way The Joker is. But at the point that Harvey becomes Two-Face, his outlook is so twisted that he starts to see The Joker as a kindred spirit…and The Joker knows he has Harvey where he wants him. It’s a great scene, and Heath did such a wonderful job. As an actor, it was exciting to work with him. Heath’s performance made this Joker an indelible screen character. He was everything you could want in an arch-villain as infamous as The Joker, and yet he was completely original.”
Nolan says, “The Joker is terrifying because there appears no rhyme or reason for what he does. He’s just a force of nature tearing through. With Two-Face, you see his transformation and you understand where his anger and his grief come from. Aaron did an extraordinary job of portraying the tragic arc of Harvey Dent and Two-Face; he takes you on that emotional ride with him.”
Apart from the obvious example of Harvey Dent/Two-Face, the director observes, “There are a number of dualities in this film, and there are also several mirrored relationships. The relationship between Batman and The Joker is an interesting one, as is the relationship between Harvey Dent/Two-Face and Lieutenant Gordon.”
Reprising his role from “Batman Begins,” Gary Oldman plays Lieutenant Jim Gordon, the head of the Gotham City Police Major Crime Unit (MCU). “Gary is such a remarkable actor,” Roven says. “Gordon could have been a comparatively straightforward role, especially surrounded by the more eccentric and even bizarre characters, but Gary brought so many colors to his performance.”
Nolan comments, “In the first film, Gordon was a very reserved character. It required an actor who could play an important role, but in a very subtle and restrained way. I was thrilled to be able to bring Gary back as Gordon, but in a story that challenges the character more and lets Gary show more of what he’s so great at.”
In “The Dark Knight,” Lieutenant Gordon is facing mounting pressure from all sides in the wake of the recent escalation of crime, but as a career cop, he knows his first, best option is to follow his gut instincts, which tell him to trust Batman. He understands that Batman now poses some danger to Gotham, but he believes Batman may ultimately be its salvation, especially with the arrival of The Joker. “The police have never encountered anything like The Joker,” says Oldman. “He’s not interested in money or even power, in the usual sense of the word. The Joker is all about chaos; he does what he does for the fun of it. How do you police someone like that?”
Thomas adds that in addition to being tested because of Batman’s efforts and the effect they are having on his city, “Gordon doesn’t entirely trust Harvey Dent yet because there has never been a politician in Gotham City who wasn’t corrupt in some way. He knows something must be done and decides Batman is his best bet because he knows Batman’s intentions and has faith that things will get better in the long run.”
Bruce Wayne has two other trusted allies in his life: his loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth, who, since Bruce’s parents were murdered, has essentially been the only father Bruce has ever known; and the brilliant Lucius Fox, who is now the CEO of Wayne Enterprises, in addition to being the architect of Batman’s high-tech arsenal. Oscar-winning actors Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman return as Alfred and Lucius, respectively, having played the same roles in “Batman Begins.”
As Bruce Wayne’s closest confidants, Alfred and Lucius know Batman’s true identity, but with that knowledge comes responsibility. Each in his own way also serves as a mentor, an advocate, and sometimes as Bruce’s conscience. “The bond between them is very clear, but you see the different sides of their relationships,” Nolan says. “Lucius Fox is fully aware of what Bruce is doing as Batman and approves to a large extent. But over the course of the film, we test the limits of what Lucius finds acceptable in terms of what Bruce does as Batman.”
Freeman notes, “I see Lucius as practical-minded in doing what has to be done in order to facilitate this man’s mission. Batman has set himself up as a champion of justice, and once he’s established that idea and the world is counting on him, he has to step up to the plate and deliver. But Lucius questions if there are limits to what he will do to help Bruce meet that challenge.”
On the other hand, Nolan says, “Alfred is a firm believer in what Bruce is doing and encourages him to take it even further if necessary, because Alfred believes it’s the right thing to do. Of course, Alfred is also concerned for the human side of Bruce because Alfred raised him from a boy, but he tries not to let his own fears for Bruce’s personal safety get in the way of telling him to carry on with his quest.”
Bruce Wayne tells Alfred that, as a symbol, Batman can’t have limits, but “to Alfred, Bruce is a real person and does, in fact, have limits,” says Caine. “Bruce is like his child, and you always see your children as kids, even when they are all grown up. So, of course, Alfred worries about what he is doing. I think of Alfred as Bruce’s guardian angel, not only physically, but psychologically and morally. There are real issues there, and Alfred often has a go at him about it. Alfred’s relationship with Bruce is the most human and also, I think, the most humorous,” Caine smiles.
The director says that Alfred’s humor comes naturally. “Michael is a very funny guy; I’ve never worked with an actor who could time comedy quite so effortlessly. He knows exactly what to do with a line to get the biggest laugh.
“Working with great veterans like Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman, I benefit massively from their experience,” Nolan continues. “They have a calm presence on the set that everybody responds to, and they just inspire everyone around them to be on their best game. It was a privilege to work with them in the first film and an honor to have them back for ‘The Dark Knight.’”
The film’s main cast also includes Eric Roberts as Maroni, one of the heads of Gotham City’s crime cartel; Chin Han as Lau, an Asian business mogul, who makes Gotham’s crime syndicate an offer they can’t refuse; Nestor Carbonell as the Mayor of Gotham City; and Anthony Michael Hall as a television news reporter. Cillian Murphy also makes a return cameo appearance as Scarecrow.
Overall, Nolan states, “The cast is a terrific ensemble of some of the most extraordinarily talented actors working in movies, which made it very exciting for everyone involved. It generated a great atmosphere on the set, and it was magical to watch actors with very different approaches come together and work so hard towards the same goals.”
“Will you be wanting the Bat-Pod, Sir?”
“In the middle of the day, Alfred? Not very subtle.”
On the screen, Lucius Fox gets credit for providing Batman with his state-of-the-art crime-fighting accoutrement, from his new and improved Batsuit to his weapons and his different modes of transportation. In real life, however, credit goes to Chris Nolan and his behind-the-scenes design teams, led by production designer Nathan Crowley and costume designer Lindy Hemming, as well as special effects supervisor Chris Corbould and his crew, who turn design into function.
Nolan remarks, “With ‘Batman Begins,’ we got to show how things like the Batmobile and the Batsuit were developed. At the same time, we didn’t fully explore all of the gadgetry, so in continuing the story, what we get to do is show how he becomes even more high-tech, but still in a credible way. What I love about Batman is that he has no super powers except for his extraordinary wealth. Looking at it from that point of view, if you had limitless financial resources, and therefore a lot of power in material ways, how could you apply that to the creation of some amazing gadgets and crime-fighting techniques, all of which are still based on real science and real-world logic?”
Nolan and Crowley had previously redesigned The Caped Crusader’s legendary Batmobile for “Batman Begins,” creating something of a cross between a Lamborghini and a Humvee. The ultimate muscle car, the Batmobile—nicknamed the Tumbler—combines the power and handling of a sports car with a structure closer to that of an armored tank. Riding on six monster truck tires, the Batmobile has no front axle, allowing it to make tighter turns. Despite weighing in at two and a half tons, it can jump as much as six feet high, and up to a distance of sixty feet, peeling off the instant it touches down. The Batmobile can also do zero to sixty in five seconds.
While the Batmobile remains a formidable presence in “The Dark Knight,” the film introduces Batman’s newest ride, the Bat-Pod, a high-powered, heavily armed two-wheeled machine. “Of course we were going to have the Batmobile back,” states Nolan, “but we wanted to give Batman something new: a fresh means of transportation, something very exotic and very powerful looking. It’s a two-wheeled vehicle, but it’s definitively not a motorcycle. In essence, the Bat-Pod is to the world of motorcycles what the Tumbler is to the world of cars.”
Fast and maneuverable through the streets of Gotham City, the Bat-Pod is also capable of handling all terrains. It has the same monster truck tires as those found on the Batmobile and is self-standing, meaning it does not require a foot stand. Well outfitted for hostile situations, it is equipped with weapons on both sides: 40mm blast cannons, 50-caliber machine guns, and grappling hook launchers.
The original design of the Bat-Pod was the brainchild of Crowley and Nolan. With little more than the basic concept in mind, the two retreated to their favorite design headquarters—aka Nolan’s garage—to work out the details. Crowley recalls, “We figured, ‘Let’s just go for it; let’s build it full-size.’ So we did. We got some tools and put together a full-size model out of anything we could find that might fit.”
Of course, Nolan and Crowley still had no idea if their invention could actually run. That’s where the special effects team, headed up by Chris Corbould, came in. Corbould relates, “First of all, I remember when Chris Nolan first showed me his idea for the Batmobile. I had no idea how we were going to make it work even though it ended up being very successful. So when I got his call asking me to come have a look at something he called ‘the Bat-Pod,’ I thought, ‘Uh-oh, what have you dreamt up this time?’”
Corbould flew to L.A., arrived at Nolan’s garage, and the first time he looked at Nolan and Crowley’s model of the Bat-Pod, “I think he was almost in tears,” Crowley laughs. “He looked horrified that he might have to actually mechanize that thing. We kept bringing him cups of tea, and he was just sitting there staring at it, looking like, ‘Oh my God, what time is the next flight out?’ It was the usual clash of design versus engineering.”
As it turns out, Crowley was not far off in his assessment of Corbould’s state of mind. “I was flabbergasted,” Corbould admits. “I stood there silently, pretending I was mulling it over, but the thought going through my head was that they both had to be off their nut. Where was I going to put a power train? And with those massive wheels, would this thing actually steer? There were so many issues.”
Despite his concerns, Corbould returned to London, where he and his crew began brainstorming ways to bring the Bat-Pod to life. After some trial and error, they developed the final working Bat-Pod, which was surprisingly close to the rough model that Nolan and Crowley had originally constructed. Nolan confesses, “It really shouldn’t work, but somehow Chris and his team found a way to do it.”
“The funny thing is,” Corbould says, “I don’t think Chris or Nathan had ever ridden a motorcycle in their lives, so they were completely unaware of the mechanics needed to get that thing moving. In a way it was beneficial because they weren’t steered towards a more orthodox bike, even subconsciously. The fact that they had no knowledge of the mechanics helped them create this weird, wonderful vehicle.”
Actually being able to drive it was another matter entirely. Nolan confirms, “The finished product that Chris and his team came up with was very striking, very effective and worked very well, but it’s incredibly difficult to ride and to steer.”
In order to maneuver the Bat-Pod, the driver has to lean his upper body forward, almost horizontally, and steer from his elbows, rather than his wrists. In fact, the only person who was able to master the Bat-Pod was professional stunt rider Jean-Pierre Goy. Corbould offers, “I’ve worked with Jean-Pierre a couple of times, and he is one of the best bike riders in the world, if not the best. Right away, he totally got in the mindset of learning that machine. He said, ‘I’m not riding another bike until I finish this sequence,’ because he had to concentrate on the Bat-Pod’s unique handling qualities. I’d be lying if I said it was easy for even him to ride, but it looked spectacular when he did, so it was worth the effort.”

“You want to be able to turn your head…”
The silhouette of Batman is an indelible image, instantly recognizable to even the most casual observer. Chris Nolan and costume designer Lindy Hemming knew it was important to preserve that image in redesigning and updating the Batsuit for “The Dark Knight.”
Focusing on increased comfort and better flexibility, Hemming and her team did extensive research into the protective suits worn by motocross riders, as well as military issue protective armor. “We wanted the new Batsuit to be a more supple, more maneuverable, more breathable piece of equipment, like a modern suit of armor instead of a rubber suit,” Hemming says, referring to the neoprene material used in making the Batsuit for “Batman Begins.”
The new Batsuit is comprised of 110 separate pieces. The base layer of the suit was made of a polyester mesh material, which is employed by the military and high-tech sports manufacturers because of its moisture-wicking properties. Then individually molded pieces of flexible urethane were attached to the mesh to form the overall armor plating. For added protection, carbon fiber panels, which are light yet incredibly strong and resistant, were placed inside a select group of the urethane pieces around the legs, chest and abdomen.
To illustrate the evolution of the Batsuit from “Batman Begins” to “The Dark Knight,” costume FX supervisor Graham Churchyard points out, “There were essentially three main components to the Batsuit in ‘Batman Begins’ and on this film there were more than 100, so it was a very complicated suit. Add to that, all of those individual pieces had to be modeled and then molded and cast. Each piece also had to be replicated dozens of times for the multiple Batsuits needed for the overall production. It was an extraordinary amount of work.”
At the behest of both Nolan and Bale, Hemming’s main mission was to modify the Batsuit to allow more rotation of the head and neck. “In the past, Batman has always had to move his shoulders to turn his head, so that was a definite priority,” Bale affirms. The seemingly simple answer was to separate the cowl from the rest of the suit, but it had to appear seamless so as not to compromise The Dark Knight’s imposing silhouette.
The overall redesign suited Christian Bale perfectly. “It was much more comfortable and far less claustrophobic than the first suit. It was also more agile and gave me better range of motion, which helped with the action and fight sequences. But it still gave me that feeling of invincibility,” he acknowledges. “You can’t help but feel protected and more powerful when you put the Batsuit on. It just works.”
When it came to fighting and protection, the new and improved Batsuit did more than offer added flexibility. It is also outfitted with a variety of gadgets to aid Batman in his war on crime, including razor sharp fins that can be extended and then fired from the gauntlets on his forearms; and sonar-imaging lenses which flip down within Batman’s cowl, enabling him to see sonar images in 3D while masking his eyes behind glowing white shields.
The only design element of the Batsuit that remained unchanged from “Batman Begins” to “The Dark Knight” was the cape. Hemming says, “We spent a lot of time getting the cape right for the first film, and we didn’t want to change it.” The cape does have one added feature: it can fold itself into a kind of backpack and then unfurl on command, which was accomplished through digital effects.
While Bruce Wayne’s image is not as iconic as that of his alter ego, he has his own distinctive sartorial style, dictated by his financial and social status. To clothe the man behind the mask, Hemming collaborated with legendary fashion designer Giorgio Armani. “Chris Nolan and I wanted Bruce Wayne to have an elegantly tailored appearance,” Hemming offers. “We felt that the Giorgio Armani brand was emblematic of the contemporary classic look we were going for. We chose the fabrics and then worked directly with Mr. Armani and his people to tailor an entire wardrobe of suits, custom-made for the character.” As Bruce Wayne, Bale wears Armani’s newest line, Giorgio Armani Hand Made-to-Measure. Each suit carries Armani’s traditional customized owner’s label, in this case Giorgio Armani for Bruce Wayne.
Harvey Dent obviously does not have the financial means of Bruce Wayne, but Hemming says his wardrobe still had to denote an air of authority and confidence. “We dressed him simply, but impeccably in suits by (Ermenegildo) Zegna.”
The costume designer was able to get a lot more outlandish in costuming The Joker, modifying the character’s familiar look to reflect the generation of the actor playing him. Hemming explains, “Once I knew The Joker was going to be played by Heath Ledger, I wanted the costume to have a younger, trendier style than previous versions. Basically, my research ranged from Vivienne Westwood to Johnny Rotten to Iggy Pop to Pete Doherty to Alexander McQueen. I was collecting all sorts of images.”
Hemming ultimately designed an eclectic ensemble that she says “has a somewhat foppish attitude to it, with a little grunge thrown in.” Staying with The Joker’s traditional color palette, his outfit is topped by a purple coat, worn over a green waistcoat. Changing up his look, he also wears a lighter jacket that was based on the Carnaby Street Mod look. His shirt was patterned after a shirt that Hemming found at an antique market.
The Joker’s shoes are from Milan and were selected by the costume designer because they had an upward swoop at the toe, which she thought was reminiscent of clown shoes. His tie was fashioned from a fabric that was specially woven to Hemming’s specifications by Turnbull & Asser, a London-based clothier better known for dressing British royalty and the like. “Heath wanted it to be thin, so it’s a ‘60s tie but in a Turnbull & Asser fabric. I dare say it’s the weirdest tie that Turnbull & Asser has ever made,” Hemming laughs. “When Heath came in and we showed him all the bits and pieces of the costume, he thought it was fantastically original and just went for it.”
The Joker’s make-up was also a departure from past incarnations of the character. While he retains an allusion to his familiar white-faced, sneering visage, his make-up for “The Dark Knight” was intended to give him a more frenetic look that also lends to its shock value. The Joker’s face is covered in a white pancake that is cracked and runny in places. His eyes are thickly rimmed in black, and a sloppy red grin is painted on, extending from his mouth to his cheeks but not quite masking the terrible scars beneath. His hair is a more subtle, but still noticeable, shade of green.
Make-up and hair designer Peter Robb-King remarks, “Clearly, there was a perception in the audience’s mind of what The Joker would look like, but we wanted to get under the skin, so to speak, of what this character represents in this story. He is someone who has been damaged in every sense of the word, so it was important that we create a look that was not, forgive the pun, ‘jokey.’”
Heath Ledger’s make-up artist, John Caglione, Jr., calls the application of the actor’s make-up “a dance.” He describes, “Heath would scrunch up his face in specific expressions, raising his forehead and squinting his eyes, and I would paint on the white over his facial contortions. This technique created textures and expressions that just painting the face a flat white would not. Then I used black make-up around Heath’s eyes while he held them closed very tight, which created consistent facial textures. After the black was on, I sprayed water over his eyes, and he would squeeze his eyes and shake his head, and all that black drippy, smudgy stuff would happen.”
The Joker’s make-up also represents a revolutionary advancement in the application of prosthetics, developed and executed by prosthetic supervisor Conor O’Sullivan and prosthetic make-up artist Robert Trenton. “They used a brand new silicone-based process that enables the prosthetics to be laid on the skin in such a way that it’s seamless,” Robb-King describes. “It’s absolutely amazing because you can put a camera right up to the face—even an IMAX camera—and there are no issues.”
O’Sullivan reveals, “It took us about two years to develop the technology, but after a few glitches, we hit on it. We are now able to produce silicone pieces that are applied directly to the skin. And it blends with the skin perfectly; if you didn’t know it was there, you would have a hard time seeing anything.”
In addition, the new process cut the application time to a fraction of what was needed in the past. O’Sullivan confirms, “The Joker prosthetics would previously have taken a good three to four hours. Instead they took about 25 minutes and looked far superior, which was great.”
The clown masks for The Joker’s gang were individually sculpted and molded and then hand-painted. Interestingly, the filmmakers learned that every clown face is registered and owned by the person who first created it, so all of the clown masks in the movie had to be cleared; none of them could be copied from existing clown faces.
The more graphic make-up effects for the character of Two-Face involved a combination of prosthetics and visual effects. Robb-King and his team worked closely with visual effect supervisor Nick Davis to depict the damage to Harvey Dent’s face, because it is so severe that it could not be achieved entirely with prosthetics. Eckhart recalls, “It was interesting for me in that, because of the technology, I didn’t have to spend hours in make-up every day. The whole process was effortless…at least for me,” he smiles.

and the result is an incredibly immersive experience.”

Production on “The Dark Knight” actually began several weeks ahead of the official start of principal photography. The cast and crew went on location in Chicago to shoot the opening prologue for the film: a dramatic bank heist that sets in motion the criminal rampage of The Joker. The advance scenes also marked a milestone in filmmaking as Christopher Nolan became the first director to use IMAX cameras to film sequences in a traditional feature film release. “I’ve always had an interest in shooting in IMAX,” Nolan relates. “I’ve seen IMAX presentations at museums and such and found the format to be completely overwhelming. The clarity and crispness of the images are unparalleled, so I thought if you could shoot a dramatic feature with IMAX cameras—not just blow up a 35mm film to show on an IMAX screen—it would really bring the audience into the action.”
Emma Thomas notes, “When you think about some of the IMAX films we remember: they’ve taken these cameras up Mount Everest, they’ve taken them under the ocean, astronauts have had them in space… So if they can do that, then surely we can shoot on the streets of Chicago with an IMAX camera.”
As with any “first,” Nolan and his longtime cinematographer, Wally Pfister, knew that filming on the streets of Chicago with IMAX cameras would come with its own set of challenges, beginning with the size of the cameras. “The cameras are enormous and much heavier than a 35mm camera,” Pfister confirms. “It required an entirely different approach, but like any challenge in moviemaking, you can’t be so intimidated that you shy away from it. You just bite off one piece at a time until you’ve tackled it.”
For Nolan and his crew, that first “bite” was shooting the film’s opening scenes. Pfister recalls, “The week that we spent shooting the bank heist sequence was like IMAX school for all of us.” They passed with flying colors. Filming the prologue with IMAX cameras not only met but exceeded all expectations, so the filmmakers made the decision to shoot several more scenes with IMAX cameras, including most of the major action sequences.
Pfister’s team had to find a way to rig the huge cameras to not only capture but also follow the action. They turned to the people at Ultimate Arm, the award-winning creators of the gyrostabilized remote control camera crane. The Ultimate Arm technicians were able to reinforce the head of the crane so it could handle the weight of the IMAX cameras. Pfister reveals, “We shot most of the Bat-Pod sequences with the Ultimate Arm, which allowed us to swing the camera up, down and all around the Bat-Pod and get some really stunning footage.”
Key grip Mike Lewis also crafted sturdier rigs that enabled the camera crew to mount the weighty IMAX cameras on the hood of a car, the side of a truck or anywhere else, as needed. All of the regular camera mounts had to be strengthened in order to handle the extra weight of the IMAX cameras. Nolan and Pfister also had high praise for Steadicam operator Bob Gorelick, who, Pfister says, “did a remarkable job of keeping that enormous camera in place.”
With advancements in technology on his side, the cinematographer assumed the sheer weight of the IMAX camera would preclude him from doing any handheld shots, but Nolan had other ideas. Pfister recounts, “Early in pre-production, Chris said to me, ‘You’ve got to try to handhold one of the IMAX cameras at some point just to say you did it.’ And I said, ‘No way! I am not putting that thing on my shoulder.’ But he kept nudging me and bugging me to try it, and finally I broke down and decided I had to give it a go. I actually did one handheld shot with the IMAX camera, running in front of a S.W.A.T. team into a building. More than getting the shot, I think Chris was really proud of himself that he was able to get me to do that,” he admits.
“We were able to utilize the IMAX format without having to compromise the way in which we would have filmed with smaller cameras. It didn’t slow us down in the slightest and it was pretty exciting to see it come together,” says Nolan.
In addition to the size and heft of the cameras, however, there were other factors that had to be addressed in incorporating the larger format film. “The composition of shots is entirely different because the frame is so much bigger, so you need to center things more to pull your attention to the action. And focus is much more critical because it is a shallower depth of field,” Pfister clarifies, adding that the larger size frame also had a direct effect on the lighting. “One of the most challenging things about filming in IMAX is trying to hide the lights. With the expanded frame, you’re seeing so much more from side to side and top to bottom so you can’t place lights where you normally would. You have to put them behind objects and anywhere else you can hide them.”
The size and clarity of the IMAX footage affected other departments, as well. Nathan Crowley notes, “Filming in IMAX is a great bonus to a production designer because you notice things you ordinarily wouldn’t even see. The perspective is huge. I mean, we purposely had a lot of low ceilings and beautiful shiny floors because they stay in frame. Then again, we also had to make sure the finishes were superb because you’ll also see every speck of dust on the floor,” he laughs.
Everyone agreed the end result was more than worth the effort of mastering the learning curve. “You can absolutely see the difference,” Pfister attests. “It’s sharper; it has more resolution, more contrast and a richer color saturation. It is an overall improved image, whether you’re seeing it on an IMAX screen or on a regular screen. I think the action will jump off the screen in any theater.”

With “The Dark Knight,” Christopher Nolan sought to expand the world of Batman in a literal sense by moving the action from the confines of a soundstage to the expanse of practical locations. “We were looking for ways to expand the scope of this film, so I was determined to take the location filming much further than what we did on ‘Batman Begins,’” the director says. “The real world is built on a scale you could never reproduce in the studio.”
As it had in “Batman Begins,” the city of Chicago once again became Gotham City. “I spent some time growing up in Chicago,” Nolan offers, “so it’s a city I know and love. It is famous for its architecture and it is also a very film-friendly city. We shot there for weeks on ‘Batman Begins,’ but this time we were going to be there for months and the help and encouragement we got from the city was extraordinary.”
Chuck Roven confirms, “I can’t say enough about Mayor Daley, the Chicago Film Office and, most importantly, the citizens of Chicago, who could not have been more excited or more welcoming to us. They gave us total cooperation and allowed us to do some unbelievable things on their streets, and we appreciated and always tried to respect that privilege.”
Inarguably, the most incredible thing the city allowed the production to do was unprecedented: flipping a 40-foot tractor-trailer, end over end, right in the heart of the city’s banking district on LaSalle Street. When Chris Corbould saw the truck flip described in the script, he admits, “I tried to make compromises with Chris—like maybe the whole truck doesn’t go over or maybe we could use a smaller truck—but he wasn’t having any of it.”
Nolan responds, “Finally I turned to him one day and said, ‘Chris, it really ought to be an 18-wheeler. And I know you can find a way to do this because that’s just who you are and that’s what you do.’”
The first order of business was to make sure the stunt was even possible. “After about six weeks of calculations, we were ready to do an actual test,” Corbould recalls. “We went out to an open space, got the truck up to speed and pressed the button, and it just sailed over. I had to go to Chris Nolan and tell him it worked perfectly.”
Nevertheless, the filmmakers were aware that there was a vast difference between flipping a truck in the middle of nowhere and doing it in the middle of a city street. Before they could carry out the stunt, city engineers were called in to make sure that the tons of force necessary to send the truck end over end would not damage the infrastructure of LaSalle Street, including the various utility lines that run beneath it. Once safe parameters were determined, the production was given the green light.
When the night of the stunt came, the truck flip went like clockwork, earning applause from the assembled cast and crew. “It was an impressive thing to watch this truck fly over and land precisely where Chris said it was going to land,” Nolan remarks. “At the top of its arc, it looked almost like a skyscraper standing there, and then it just continued going over very gracefully. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
The film’s most explosive sequence involved the implosion of an entire building, which was staged at the now-vacant Brach’s Candy factory building. Corbould and his crew teamed with the company Controlled Demolition, Inc., headed by Doug Loizeaux, to create the explosion. Corbould offers, “Chris didn’t want the building to go down like a deck of cards, like a conventional demolition. I worked with Doug, who came up with a system to make the building go down more like a wave, in sequence. Then we added our special effects elements to make it more spectacular.”
For the filmmakers, safety was paramount. The main concerns involved surrounding street traffic, as well as active rail lines running nearby the building. The production contacted the railroad companies and coordinated the train schedules to ensure that no trains would be coming through at the time of the explosion. Adjacent street traffic was also blocked to keep onlookers and passersby from getting anywhere near the blast. In addition, the scene called for a bus to be in proximity to the explosion, so polycarbonate sheeting was placed on the windows of the bus to ensure that even if the windows broke, no glass would fly into the bus with cast members inside.
On location in Chicago, the filmmakers also took advantage of some of the city’s defining features, including its world-renowned architecture and multi-leveled streets. Nolan made good use of the parallel upper and lower roadways for the climactic car chase between The Joker, the police and Batman. The breakneck chase sent a variety of cars, armored trucks and one ill-fated 18-wheeler hurtling down such streets as Upper and Lower Wacker Drive, Lower Lower Randolph, Lower Lower Columbus and LaSalle Street. During the chase, the Bat-Pod even takes a side route through the newly remodeled train station under Millennium Park.
“The Dark Knight” marks Nathan Crowley’s fourth film in the Windy City, and the production designer observes, “The Chicago architecture is phenomenal; all of the great architects of the last century have worked there. And it’s wonderfully cinematic.”
Crowley chose two buildings designed by famed architect Mies van der Rohe for a variety of sets. The IBM Building was the site of the Wayne Enterprises Boardroom, Harvey Dent’s office, the Mayor’s office and the Police Commissioner’s office, while the lobby of One Illinois Plaza became the main living area of Bruce Wayne’s new penthouse. Of course, utilizing the lobby level for the penthouse set meant that visual effects would be needed to create top-floor views of the city through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Bruce’s bedroom was built separately on the 39th floor of Hotel 71 on East Wacker Drive.
Bruce and Alfred have taken up residence in the penthouse because Wayne Manor is still under construction after it was destroyed in a fire. Nolan comments, “At the end of ‘Batman Begins,’ Bruce says he’s going to rebuild Wayne Manor brick by brick. That would take a long time, so it would be pretty unrealistic for him to be already moved back in. And there was also a period in the comic books where Bruce Wayne did live downtown in a penthouse, so we took that as a jumping-off point. We wanted to have him in the city because this is very much a story of a city and we felt it was important to put Bruce in the middle of that.”
The penthouse was of a decidedly more modern design than Wayne Manor. Crowley explains, “We were given access to these great modernist floors, and we felt that era of architecture was better suited for what we were trying to convey emotionally. It’s cold and it’s vacant; there’s no warmth to the environment.”
Nolan adds, “Bruce is living a very lonely existence in a way, so the stark design of the penthouse was meant to reflect his state of mind.”
Filming in Chicago also took place at such locations as the Convention Hall at McCormick Place West, which became the vast warehouse of Wayne Enterprises’ Applied Science Division; Navy Pier, which was the site of a dramatic scene involving the panicked citizens of Gotham City; and the Old Chicago Post Office, which was employed for several scenes, including the opening bank robbery. In addition, the exterior of Chicago’s Trump Tower, which was in the early construction stage at the time of production, was used for a pivotal confrontation between Batman and The Joker. The interior of the building framework was carefully re-created in England at Cardington—the converted airship hangar that is now used as a soundstage—where the fight was actually filmed.
Rising out of the Chicago skyline, the Sears Tower was the site of a soaring exterior shot, and Christian Bale was not going to be denied an opportunity to stand atop the tallest building in the United States. The actor recounts, “I overheard my stunt double, Buster Reeves, saying he was heading up to the Sears Tower to do that, and I said, ‘Sorry buddy, no way. I just have to do this one myself.’ I mean, how often do you get to be 110 stories up, looking out over all of Chicago? But it’s a funny and probably quite dangerous thing,” he laughs, “how quickly I felt very at home out there and how soon I was able move around right on the edge, looking straight down.”
Far from being worried, Nolan supported his leading man’s decision to grab that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “Christian likes to challenge himself and I knew we weren’t putting him in any actual physical danger. It was perfectly safe; it just required guts to stand there. I certainly wouldn’t want to do it, but he seemed to enjoy it and it made a beautiful shot for us. And after that, standing out on a ledge on a building in Hong Kong must have been easy.”
“The Dark Knight” sends Batman to the Far East on a mission to bring down an international financial magnate, who is manipulating Gotham City’s most powerful crime cartels. The scenes were filmed on location in Hong Kong, primarily at the magnificent IFC2 Building, the tallest building in the city. “I liked the idea of sending Batman someplace more exotic,” says Nolan. “We had done that with Bruce Wayne in the first film, before he became Batman, but I really wanted to show the character of Batman outside the realm of Gotham City. I had been to Hong Kong many years ago at a film festival, and remembered it as a great location. It’s an incredibly visual place, which makes it ideal in cinematic terms.”

Con “Batman Begins,” el escritor/director Christopher Nolan inauguró un nuevo capítulo en la franquicia cinematográfica de Batman llevando al legendario personaje de nuevo a sus orígenes, volviendo a imaginar por qué y cómo el industrial multimillonario Bruce Wayne se convertía en el enigmático luchador contra el crimen conocido para el mundo como Batman. En “El Caballero Oscuro” Nolan regresa a la saga de Batman con el personaje ahora, en palabras del director, “totalmente formado”.

Al principio no era así. Volviendo al papel doble de Bruce Wayne/Batman, Christian Bale afirma: “Creo que Bruce pensó que sería algo finito, que Batman serviría como una inspiración para Gotham City y que finalmente sería capaz de dejar atrás a este personaje que había concebido. Pero llega a comprender cada vez más que esto no es algo que pueda abandonar ahora…o posiblemente nunca. Hay nuevos enemigos de los que proteger la ciudad”.
El más peligroso de estos enemigos es el castigo más infame de Batman: un maníaco desalmado e implacable conocido como Joker. “Joker es el ultimo archivillano de la pantalla”, afirma Nolan. “A su manera, Joker es también un icono como lo es El Caballero Oscuro, y eso nos brindó una oportunidad y un desafío en lo que se refiere a explorar el punto de vista distorsionado del personaje. Pero también deseábamos crear un villano que, por muy pintoresco y escandaloso que sea, surja de un lugar de la realidad. Para continuar con el tono que establecimos en ‘Batman Begins,’ decidimos que fuera un tipo bastante serio, a pesar de que se le denomina Joker (el bromista). Mientras que Joker siembra el caos y el temor, el Fiscal del Distrito Harvey Dent, en su afán de cruzada, es el nuevo rostro de la ley y el orden en Gotham City. “Harvey es un hombre del pueblo. Es un héroe genuinamente americano, en una forma diferente a Batman,” dice Nolan. “Así que ahora tenemos el triunvirato de Batman, Harvey Dent y el teniente Gordon —el sistema de la justicia, la policía y un justiciero— que forman una alianza para derribar al mundo del crimen. Utilizar a Batman les da un margen de ventaja sobre los criminales, pero sigue estando la policía que les arrestará, y después serán juzgados mediante el sistema de justicia. La dinámica entre los tres luchadores contra el crimen cambia de forma abrupta cuando un giro imprevisible de los acontecimientos destruye al inquebrantable Fiscal del Distrito Harvey Dent y hace surgir al vengativo villano Dos Caras. Nolan comenta: “La esperanza que Harvey representa para Gotham City y después la tragedia de lo que le ocurre a él y su transformación en Dos Caras…es una historia extraordinaria”.
El director indica: “Joker es el villano más extravagante, por lo que exige atención. Pero de alguna manera Harvey Dent/Dos Caras es el personaje más convincente porque tiene un margen de acción muy sorprendente. Nuestro Joker no tiene margen de acción per se; simplemente tiene una gran necedad de principio a fin. Joker y Harvey Dent: éstos son dos de los personajes más fascinantes de los comics de Batman. En una jugada innovadora, Nolan amplió el alcance de ese mundo con una primicia cinematográfica. Nolan rodó seis secuencias de acción importantes con cámaras IMAX, convirtiéndose en el primer director que utiliza las cámaras de gran formato para rodar incluso una parte de un largometraje tradicional. “A la hora de continuar la historia de Batman, el desafío era hacer las cosas mejor: ampliar el mundo que habíamos creado en la primera película, tanto por medio de la historia como en la forma en que la presentábamos”, manifiesta. “Yo estaba asombrado por la forma en que quedó la fotografía IMAX. Introduce al público justo a la acción de una forma que ningún otro formato de película podría hacerlo. Como cineasta, creo que siempre se está intentando volver a eso, y ampliar el lienzo de nuestra historia con IMAX parecía una magnífica forma de hacerlo”.
Los cineastas también han hecho varios cambios en el mundo de Batman: el hogar familiar de Bruce Wayne, Wayne Manor, se incendió y quedó arrasado al final de “Batman Begins,” por lo que ahora Bruce reside en un moderno ático con vistas a la ciudad. Batman también tiene un Batitraje de diseño reciente, que le da una mayor capacidad de movimientos y un campo de visión más grande: “Puedo girar la cabeza”, sonríe Bale. Y el ágil y potente Bat-Pod hace su debut con gran anticipación cuando el Caballero Oscuro serpentea entre el tráfico de Gotham City en una secuencia de persecución no apta para cardíacos rodada en las calles de Chicago.
La lucha por la justicia por parte de Batman también le lleva a una odisea a lo largo de medio mundo hasta Hong Kong, siendo la primera vez que el Cruzado con Capa sale de los confines de Gotham City en la pantalla.
“Chris tuvo una maravillosa visión general de lo que él deseaba conseguir con esta película, y él fue capaz de conseguir esto y más”, dice Roven. “Es uno de esos directores excepcionales que, cuando te dice lo que está tratando de hacer, no importa lo ambicioso que sea, puedes confiar en que lo hará, generalmente incluso mejor de lo que imaginabas”.

“El Caballero Oscuro” reúne a varios miembros del reparto de “Batman Begins,” encabezado por Christian Bale en el papel principal. Bale dice que dio la bienvenida a la oportunidad una vez más de encarnar la figura solitaria, que ha tenido que renunciar a gran parte de su identidad personal por el bien de la mayoría. Indica: “Ciertamente, Bruce se está sacrificando, tanto mental como físicamente, como consecuencia de este personaje de Batman a quien él ha dado rienda suelta y ahora es incapaz de refrenar. Más que una persona, él ha creado un símbolo y ese símbolo no puede tener límites. No puede mostrar debilidad nunca. Por lo tanto, tenemos el conflicto entre lo que es bueno para Bruce Wayne y lo que se debe hacer según Batman, porque las dos cosas no siempre son compatibles”.
“Trabajar con Christian es un verdadero placer y sencillamente muy divertido. Su presencia es algo muy atractivo en el plató”, dice Nolan. “También tiene una gran fuerza; se centra increíblemente en aprovechar la realidad psicológica de cualquier personaje que esté interpretando. Aplica el mismo enfoque disciplinado para encontrar la verdad de ese personaje y se ciñe a ella. Es de una gran ayuda para mí como cineasta, porque sé que está preparado y sabe muy bien cómo se va a mover su personaje por la historia. De hecho, posee gran parte de las cualidades que Bruce Wayne pone de relieve al transformarse de un hombre ordinario en esta extraordinaria figura de lucha contra el crimen”.
“Christian aportó a su interpretación todo lo que se podría desear para el personaje: la talla moral, la resonancia emocional, la complejidad”, afirma Roven. “Era sorprendente estar en el plató viéndole. Llevó su papel a otro nivel en esta película”.
Nolan añade eso aunque Bale interpreta el mismo personaje en “El Caballero Oscuro” que hizo en “Batman Begins”, las dos películas le plantearon al actor dos desafíos muy diferentes. “En ‘Batman Begins,’ hubo mucho esfuerzo físico: tuvo que ponerse en forma de manera sorprendente y aprender todo tipo de destrezas en lo que se refiere a cómo lucha Batman, la forma en que se mueve. En esta película, yo diría que se requería más bien un proceso interno, porque Bruce se está dando cuenta del peaje personal de vivir esta doble vida y está cuestionando las elecciones que él ha hecho. Christian transmite esa lucha emocional de forma muy convincente, muchas veces sin decir una palabra”.
Sin embargo, el papel de Batman tiene unas condiciones físicas inherentes, por lo que el propio Bale participó en un curso de actualización del Método de Lucha Keysi (KFM) que Batman utiliza contra sus enemigos. Una disciplina de artes marciales relativamente nueva, el KFM es un método de lucha intuitiva, que hace un fuerte énfasis en el enfoque mental, pero Bale también tenía que estar en óptimas condiciones físicas. Se entrenó con los monitores de lucha Keysi Andy Norman y Justo Diéguez de dos a tres horas todos los días. “En el KFM, se aprende a desarrollar cada parte del cuerpo como un arma, y no es algo fácil”, comenta Norman. “Trabajamos con un Christian sumamente duro, y fue fantástico ver con qué rapidez asimilaba todo. Hubo una progresión definida en su entrenamiento desde la primera película. Él comprende mucho mejor el KFM, por lo que adquirió más potencia y sus movimientos eran increíbles”.
“Es un método de lucha fascinante”, dice Bale, “porque utiliza la adrenalina que todo el mundo siente al participar en una situación amenazante o violenta. Eso realmente es algo visceral. En lugar del tipo de calma Zen a la que apelan algunas artes marciales, el KFM se basa en el instinto animal y en poner a punto esos instintos para que sean letales, algo que es perfecto para Batman.”
Pero el Caballero Oscuro está a punto de enfrentarse a un singular criminal llamado Joker, al que le importa muy poco el Keysi o cualquier otro método de lucha. En una lucha justa, “Batman le destruiría totalmente”, afirma Bale, “pero Joker no lucha de forma limpia. Tiene otros ases bajo la manga, por lo que se trata más bien de un juego mental. Pero encuentra en Batman a un oponente muy valioso, y creo que él disfruta con eso”.
Heath Ledger interpreta el papel de Joker, el payaso malévolo que es posiblemente lo más reconocible del archicastigo de Batman. Al asignar el papel, Nolan dice que la cualidad definitoria que estaba buscando “era audacia. Yo necesitaba a un actor fenomenal, pero él también tenía que ser alguien que no tuviera miedo de asumir un papel emblemático como ése. Heath creó algo totalmente original. El director recuerda que primero se reunió con Ledger sobre el papel incluso antes de que fuera un guión. “Hablamos sobre cómo veíamos este personaje y ambos teníamos exactamente el mismo concepto: que Joker tenía que ver con la amenaza de la anarquía y se deleita con la creación del caos y el temor a gran escala. Heath pareció entender instintivamente cómo hacer ese personaje de forma diferente a cualquier cosa que se hubiera hecho antes”.
Roven entra en detalles: “Joker es uno de los grandes villanos del mundo del cómic: psicópata, enigmático, astuto, diabólico, encantador, divertido y algo totalmente cautivador. Sabíamos que se necesitaría a un extraordinario actor para interpretarlo y que Heath se entregó en todos los sentidos. Desde cualquier matiz físico hasta cada expresión verbal, simplemente es una actuación inolvidable”.
En “El Caballero Oscuro”, Joker entra en escena sin avisar y escala sin piedad a lo más alto de la pirámide delictiva de Gotham City. “Nunca quisimos hacer una historia sobre el origen de Joker en esta película, sino que queríamos mostrar el ascenso de este personaje”, comenta Nolan. “En cierto sentido, Joker es la respuesta lógica a Batman, que ha provocado este tipo de comportamiento extremo en Gotham.”
Bale añade: “Joker desea destruir a Batman, para demostrar que todo el mundo tiene un precio e incluso se puede ejercer influencia sobre Batman de tal forma que ponga en peligro sus principios. Realmente creo que está encantado de descubrir que Batman no hará eso, y crea para Joker un oponente incluso mejor en este juego que está jugando. Es un personaje fantástico, y Heath hizo un extraordinario trabajo con eso. La puesta en escena del papel por parte de Heath no fue algo exagerado, sino que siguió siendo divertidísimo, tanto físicamente como en una forma seca y sardónica. En la otra parte de la ley, otra figura ha adquirido mayor importancia en Gotham City: Harvey Dent, el recién elegido Fiscal del Distrito, que está en una misión para destruir el monopolio del crimen organizado en su atribulada ciudad. Harvey Dent es interpretado por Aaron Eckhart, que dice: “Harvey se ha encargado de enfrentarse al crimen organizado y de limpiar las calles. Es la nueva y brillante esperanza de Gotham City, el ‘Caballero Oscuro’, como se le llama. Comienza lleno de optimismo y entusiasmo… aunque donde él termina es algo completamente diferente”, apunta. “Es un magnífico papel y soy un gran fan de Chris Nolan, por lo que cuando él me pidió que participara en la película, no lo pensé dos veces”.
Nolan dice que mientras que Eckhart se parece al milímetro al elegante y carismático Fiscal del Distrito, sus motivos para incluir al actor en el reparto eran más que evidentes. “Estábamos buscando a alguien que pudiera encarnar ese encanto genuinamente americano, porque tienes que poner de relieve a una figura heroica y muy atractiva al principio de la película. Pero él también debía tener un contraste; tenía que sugerir ese trasfondo de rabia y oscuridad que Harvey Dent necesitaba tener, de forma que el transcurso de la historia sea creíble. No se puede presentar a un personaje como éste simplemente como a una figura heroica sin defectos, sin un lado oscuro. Aaron captó todas esas cualidades muy, muy bien”.
Como el nuevo Fiscal del Distrito de Gotham City, Harvey Dent no sólo tiene que enfrentarse a una escalada del crimen, sino también a un justiciero enmascarado conocido como Batman. “Es una interesante dinámica”, comenta Eckhart, “porque Harvey ve a Batman luchando contra el crimen de una forma que a él le gustaría pero que no puede. Harvey debe quedarse dentro de las fronteras de la ley. Tiene que hacer abiertamente lo que Batman está haciendo en secreto. Él admira las intenciones de Batman, incluso si no puede apoyar públicamente sus métodos. Pero lo que piensa de Bruce Wayne es bastante diferente. No ve a Bruce más que como un playboy sobre la ciudad sin ninguna credibilidad real”.
“Harvey cree que Bruce es un completo estúpido de clase alta”, afirma Nolan. “Le sorprendería descubrir que él es realmente el hombre que está detrás de la máscara”.
A pesar de la opinión de Dent acerca de su personaje público, Bruce Wayne aprecia los nuevos esfuerzos del Fiscal del Distrito en nombre de la ciudad. Nolan comenta: “Nos parecía más lógico que Bruce viera inicialmente a Batman como un cruzado a corto plazo, como un símbolo que inspirara a la buena gente de Gotham para recuperar su ciudad. En Harvey Dent, él finalmente ve la respuesta que estaba buscando. Harvey es el héroe que Gotham necesita: un héroe con rostro y no uno que lleva máscara”.
Pero, dice Thomas, “Hay ciertas dosis de oportunismo personal en todo eso, también, porque si Harvey Dent no puede tener éxito, entonces quizá Bruce puede dejar de ser Batman. Tal vez hay un mundo en él que puede volver a una vida normal. Hay una gran parte de él que sí que desearía colgar su capa. No sé realmente si Bruce disfrutaría colgando la capa de Batman en este momento. No creo que él incluso lo sepa. Pero definitivamente hay una parte de él que percibe que él ha comenzado algo que se ha salido de control, y Harvey Dent puede ser su única esperanza para ser capaz de terminarlo”.
Para Bruce Wayne, una oportunidad de una vida normal también significa una oportunidad de un futuro con el amor de su vida, Rachel Dawes, que ahora trabaja para Dent como fiscal del distrito adjunto. En ese sentido, el Fiscal del Distrito no es una esperanza sino un obstáculo, porque Rachel tiene una relación con él, no sólo desde un punto de vista profesional sino también afectivo. “Cuando se trata de Rachel, existe una contradicción en los sentimientos de Bruce acerca de Dent. Mientras que él respeta a Dent, otra parte de Bruce sencillamente desea golpearle”, dice Bale sólo medio en broma. “Por lo tanto, la parte ideológica de Bruce y su lado muy humano están de nuevo en desacuerdo una con otra”.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, que interpreta el papel de Rachel, comenta: “Rachel tomó la desgarradora decisión de que es imposible para ella estar con Bruce siempre que él sea Batman. Entonces, Harvey Dent entró en su vida, y ella se vuelve loca por él. Creo que lo que realmente admira de Harvey, en oposición a Batman —o, mejor dicho, lo que Bruce Wayne está haciendo como Batman— es que Harvey no es un justiciero. Él no se está poniendo por encima de la ley, por lo que él cree que es en última instancia mejor para los ciudadanos de Gotham City. En lugar de eso, Harvey cree en el sistema, incluso si está destruido y va a trabajar dentro del sistema para cambiar las cosas corruptas. Creo que ésa es la razón por la que Rachel le ama y cree que es un héroe a su manera. Al mismo tiempo, ella sigue amando realmente a Bruce y obviamente sabe que él sigue enamorado de ella, por lo que es un auténtico dilema.
“Pero para mí, quiero decir que es Christian Bale y Aaron Eckhart y ambos son bastante espectaculares, como actriz, fue fácil vivir ese dilema”, se ríe Gyllenhaal. “Mi deseo de formar parte de esta película tenía casi todo que ver con Chris Nolan y el resto del reparto. Desde el principio, Chris estuvo encantador y muy interesado por mis ideas sobre el papel. Él tenía claro que quería que Rachel fuera inteligente y eficaz y no la damisela afligida, aunque ella está desconsolada a veces. Realmente somos buenos el uno para el otro porque eso es en gran medida lo que yo quería y nos empuja el uno al otro de formas diferentes para hacer de Rachel lo que es”.
“Maggie es sencillamente una actriz fantástica”, afirma Nolan. “Siempre me ha encantado su trabajo y había querido tener la oportunidad de trabajar con ella, y el papel de Rachel en esta película parecía la pareja perfecta. Maggie tiene una gran inteligencia y madurez y también es muy cariñosa y, por supuesto, encantadora. Realmente hace un papel muy creíble. Creo que transmitía magníficamente el conflicto que experimenta Rachel al estar situada entre estos dos hombres de su vida, y se puede ver por qué ambos se sentirían naturalmente atraídos hacia ella. Rachel ha conocido a Bruce desde hace mucho tiempo y él siempre estará en su corazón, pero ella además ama a Harvey y puede plantearse un futuro con él”.
No obstante, todo eso cambia en un instante cuando un incidente espantoso transforma al una vez imponente Harvey Dent en el horriblemente deformado Dos Caras, que ahora se ha obsesionado con una cosa: revancha. “Ocurre algo terrible que altera todo en su vida y la rabia se apodera de él”, dice Eckhart. “Saca fuerzas de su tristeza y su dolor y se propone destruir a los malos… o a aquellos que ahora percibe como los malos. Todavía desea justicia, pero ahora la busca fuera de la ley por la que una vez vivió. No le considero un villano exactamente de la misma forma en que lo es Joker. Pero en el momento en que Harvey se convierte en Dos Caras, su perspectiva está tan distorsionada que él comienza a ver en Joker a un alma gemela… y Joker sabe que él tiene a Harvey donde quiere. Es un magnífico escenario y Heath hizo un trabajo maravilloso. Como actor, fue apasionante trabajar con él. La actuación de Heath hizo de este Joker un personaje cinematográfico indeleble. Era todo lo que se podría querer en un archivillano tan infame como Joker, y sin embargo era totalmente original.”
Nolan dice: “Joker es aterrador porque no hay ningún motivo o razón para hacer lo que hace. Es sólo una fuerza de la naturaleza que todo lo desgarra. Con Dos Caras, se puede ver su transformación y se comprende de dónde proceden su rabia y su tristeza. Aaron hizo un extraordinario trabajo al retratar el margen de acción de Harvey Dent y Dos Caras; te lleva a un paseo emocional”.
Aparte del evidente ejemplo de Harvey Dent/Dos Caras, el director comenta: “Hay diversas dualidades en esta película y también hay varias relaciones simétricas. La relación entre Batman y Joker es interesante, como lo es la relación entre Harvey Dent/Dos Caras y el teniente Gordon.”
Repitiendo su papel en “Batman Begins,” Gary Oldman interpreta al teniente Jim Gordon, el jefe de la Unidad Principal contra el Crimen (MCU) de la Policía de Gotham City. “Gary es un actor extraordinario”, dice Roven. “Gordon podría haber sido un papel comparativamente sencillo, especialmente rodeado de los personajes más excéntricos e incluso bizarros, pero Gary aportó mucho colorido a su interpretación”.
Nolan comenta: “En la primera película Gordon era un personaje muy reservado. Requería un actor que pudiera interpretar un papel importante, pero de una forma muy sutil y comedida. Estaba encantado de poder volver a contar con Gary para Gordon, pero en una historia que desafía al personaje más y permite que Gary muestre más de aquello en lo que es grande”.
En “El Caballero Oscuro”, el teniente Gordon se enfrenta a una gran presión procedente de todas partes después de la reciente escalada de delitos, pero como un policía de carrera, sabe que su primera y mejor opción es seguir sus instintos más primarios, que le indican que confíe en Batman. Comprende que ahora Batman supone cierto peligro para Gotham, pero cree que Batman en última instancia puede ser su salvación, especialmente con la llegada de Joker. “La policía nunca ha encontrado nada como Joker,” dice Oldman. “No está interesado en el dinero ni tampoco en el poder, en el sentido habitual de la palabra. Joker tiene que ver con el caos; hace lo que hace por diversión. ¿Cómo se puede controlar a alguien así?”
Thomas añade que además de ser probado debido a los esfuerzos de Batman y el efecto que están teniendo sobre su ciudad, “Gordon no confía totalmente en Harvey Dent, porque nunca ha habido un político en Gotham City que no fuera corrupto de alguna manera. Sabe que hay que hacer algo y decide que Batman es su mayor baza porque conoce las intenciones de Batman y tiene fe en que las cosas mejorarán a largo plazo”.
Bruce Wayne tiene otros dos aliados de confianza en su vida: su fiel mayordomo, Alfred Pennyworth, que, desde que los padres de Bruce fueron asesinados, esencialmente ha sido el único padre que Bruce ha tenido jamás; y el brillante Lucius Fox, que ahora es el Consejero Delegado de Wayne Enterprises, además de ser el artífice del arsenal de alta tecnología de Batman. Los actores ganadores de Oscar Michael Caine y Morgan Freeman regresan como Alfred y Lucius, respectivamente, habiendo interpretado los mismos papeles en “Batman Begins.”
Como los más íntimos confidentes de Bruce Wayne, Alfred y Lucius conocen la verdadera identidad de Batman, pero ese conocimiento supone una responsabilidad. Cada uno a su manera actúa como un mentor, un defensor y a veces como la conciencia de Bruce. “El vínculo entre ellos es muy claro, pero se ven las diferentes partes de sus relaciones”, dice Nolan. “Lucius Fox es totalmente consciente de lo que Bruce está haciendo como Batman y lo aprueba en gran medida. Pero en el transcurso de la película, comprobamos los límites de lo que Lucius considera aceptable en términos de lo que Bruce hace como Batman”.
Freeman comenta: “Veo a Lucius como una persona pragmática al hacer lo que se tiene que hacer para facilitar la misión de este hombre. Batman se ha erigido a sí mismo como un adalid de la justicia, y una vez que ha establecido esa ida y el mundo cuenta con él, tiene que dar lo mejor de sí mismo. Pero Lucius cuestiona si hay límites sobre lo que él hará para ayudar a Bruce a cumplir ese reto”.
Por otra parte, Nolan dice: “Alfred es un firme creyente en lo que Bruce está haciendo y le anima a llevarlo incluso más lejos si es necesario, porque Alfred cree que es lo que hay que hacer. Por supuesto que Alfred también está preocupado por el lado humano de Bruce, porque Alfred le crió desde que era un niño, pero intenta no ceder a sus propios temores por la seguridad personal de Bruce cuando le dice que continúe con su búsqueda”.
Bruce Wayne le dice a Alfred que, como un símbolo, Batman no puede tener límites, pero “para Alfred, Bruce es una persona real y, de hecho, sí que tiene límites”, dice Caine. “Bruce es como su hijo, y siempre se ve a los hijos como a niños, aun cuando hayan crecido. Así que, por supuesto, Alfred se preocupa por lo que está haciendo. Considero a Alfred como el ángel de la guarda de Bruce, no solo físicamente, sino también desde un punto de vista psicológico y moral. Existen cuestiones reales en eso y, con frecuencia, Alfred le pone a prueba acerca de esto. La relación de Alfred con Bruce es la más humana y además, creo, la más humorística”, dice Caine sonriendo.
El director dice que el humor de Alfred aparece de forma natural. “Michael es un tipo muy divertido; nunca he trabajado con una actor que pudiera realizar comedia con tan poco esfuerzo. Sabe exactamente lo que hay que hacer con una línea del guión para conseguir la mayor de las carcajadas.
“Trabajando con grandes veteranos como Michael Caine y Morgan Freeman, me beneficio inmensamente de su experiencia”, prosigue Nolan. “Tienen una presencia tranquila en el plató a la que todo el mundo responde, y simplemente inspiran a todos a su alrededor para estar en las mejores condiciones. Fue un privilegio trabajar con ellos en la primera película y un honor tenerlos de nuevo en ‘El Caballero Oscuro’”.
El reparto principal de la película también incluye a Eric Roberts como Maroni, uno de los jefes del cartel criminal de Gotham City; Chin Han como Lau, un mongol encargado de negocios asiáticos, que hace al sindicato del crimen de Gotham una oferta que no puede rechazar; Nestor Carbonell como el alcalde de Gotham City; y Anthony Michael Hall como un reportero de los informativos de televisión. Cillian Murphy vuelve a hacer un cameo como el Espantapájaros.
En general, indica Nolan, “El reparto es un magnífico conjunto de algunos de los actores de más extraordinario talento que trabajan en el cine, lo que hizo que fuera apasionante que todos participaran. Creó un magnífico ambiente en el plató, y fue mágico ver a actores con enfoques muy diferentes reunirse y trabajar duro para conseguir los mismos objetivos”.
“¿Quiere el Bat-Pod, señor?”
“¿A plena luz del día, Alfred? No es muy sutil”.
En la pantalla Lucius Fox consigue crédito para facilitar a Batman su equipo de lucha contra el crimen de avanzada tecnología, desde su nuevo y mejorado Batitraje hasta sus armas y sus diferentes medios de transporte. No obstante, en la vida real, el crédito va a Chris Nolan y sus equipos de diseño entre bastidores, dirigido por el diseñador de producción Nathan Crowley y la diseñadora de vestuario Lindy Hemming, así como el supervisor de efectos especiales Chris Corbould y su equipo, que hicieron realidad el diseño.
Nolan comenta: “Con ‘Batman Begins,’ conseguimos mostrar cómo se desarrollaron cosas tales como el Batmóvil y el Batitraje. Al mismo tiempo, no exploramos totalmente todos los dispositivos, así que para continuar la historia, lo que conseguimos hacer es mostrar cómo él se convierte cada vez más en alta tecnología, pero aún de una forma creíble. Lo que me encanta de Batman es que él no tiene superpoderes excepto su extraordinaria riqueza. Mirándolo desde ese punto de vista, si tuvieras recursos financieros ilimitados, y, por consiguiente, mucho poder en términos materiales, ¿cómo podrías aplicar eso a la creación de algunos “gadgets” sorprendentes y técnicas de lucha contra el crimen, de los cuales todos se siguen basando en ciencia real y lógica del mundo real?”
Nolan y Crowley habían rediseñado con anterioridad el legendario Batmóvil del Cruzado con Capa para “Batman Begins,” creando una especie de cruce entre un Lamborghini y un Humvee. El más avanzado y potente coche, el Batmóvil —apodado el Tumbler— combina la potencia y el manejo de un coche deportivo con una estructura más cercana a la de un tanque blindado. Circulando sobre seis gigantescas ruedas de camión, el Batmóvil no tiene eje delantero, lo que le permite realizar giros más ajustados. Aunque pesa unas dos toneladas y media, puede saltar hasta casi dos metros de altura, y hasta una distancia de 18 metros, despegándose en el instante en el que toca el suelo. El Batmóvil también puede llegar de 0 a 100 en cinco segundos.
Mientras que el Batmóvil sigue teniendo una presencia formidable en “El Caballero Oscuro”, la película introduce el vehículo más reciente de Batman, el Bat-Pod, una máquina de dos ruedas, con armas pesadas y una gran potencia. “Por supuesto que íbamos a tener de nuevo el Batmóvil”, afirma Nolan, “pero queríamos dar a Batman algo nuevo: un medio de transporte renovado, algo muy exótico y de aspecto muy potente. Se trata de un vehículo de dos ruedas, pero definitivamente no es una motocicleta. En esencia, el Bat-Pod es al mundo de las motos lo que el Tumbler es al mundo de los coches”.
Rápido y manejable por las calles de Gotham City, el Bat-Pod también es capaz de moverse por todos los terrenos. Posee las mismas ruedas gigantescas de camión que las que se encuentran en el Batmóvil y es autónomo, lo que significa que no requiere un soporte de pie. Bien preparado para situaciones hostiles, está equipado con armas en ambos lados: cañones de ráfaga de 40 mm, ametralladoras del calibre 50, y lanzadores de garfios de agarre.
El diseño original del Bat-Pod fue la creación de Crowley y Nolan. Con poco más que el concepto básico en mente, los dos se retiraron a sus cuarteles generales del diseño favoritos —es decir, el garaje de Nolan— para trabajar en los detalles. Crowley recuerda: “Nos planteamos ‘Hagamos eso; construyámoslo a tamaño natural’. Y así lo hicimos. Conseguimos unas herramientas y creamos un modelo a tamaño natural a partir de algo que descubrimos que podría valer”.
Por supuesto que Nolan y Crowley todavía no sabían si su invento podría funcionar. Ahí es donde entró en juego el equipo de efectos especiales, dirigido por Chris Corbould. Cuenta Corbould: “En primer lugar, recuerdo cuando Chris Nolan me mostró por primera vez la idea para el Batmóvil. No tenía ni idea de cómo íbamos a hacerlo funcionar, aunque terminó teniendo un gran éxito. Así que cuando recibí su llamada pidiéndome que fuera a echar un vistazo a algo a lo que él llamaba ‘el Bat-Pod,’ pensé ‘Huy, huy, ¿qué se te ha ocurrido esta vez?’”
Corbould voló a Los Angeles, llegó al garaje de Nolan, y la primera vez que contempló el modelo del Bat-Pod de Nolan y Crowley, “creo que casi se le saltan las lágrimas”, dice Crowley riéndose. “Parecía horrorizado por el hecho de que tuviera que mecanizar aquello realmente. Seguimos llevándole tazas de té, y él simplemente estaba allí sentado mirándolo, pareciendo como si pensase, ‘Oh, Dios mío, ¿a qué hora sale el próximo vuelo?’ Era el conflicto de diseño habitual frente a la ingeniería”.
Como resultó ser, Crowley no estaba muy equivocado en cuanto a su valoración del estado de ánimo de Corbould. “Yo estaba estupefacto”, admite Corbould. “Me quedé allí en silencio, fingiendo que estaba reflexionando, pero lo que me pasaba por la cabeza era que ambos tenían que estar mal de la cabeza. ¿Dónde iba yo a poner un tren transmisor de potencia? Y con esas impresionantes ruedas, ¿realmente esto podría girar? Había muchas cuestiones”.
A pesar de sus preocupaciones, Corbould regresó a Londres, donde él y su equipo comenzaron a hacer una tormenta de ideas sobre las formas de que el Bat-Pod pudiera cobrar vida. Después de algunas pruebas de ensayo y error, desarrollaron el Bat-Pod que finalmente iba a funcionar, que sorprendentemente se acercaba al modelo básico que Nolan y Crowley habían construido originalmente. Nolan confiesa: “Realmente debería funcionar, pero de algún modo Chris y su equipo encontraron una forma de hacerlo”.
“Lo divertido del caso es que”, dice Corbould, “no creo que Chris o Nathan hubieran montado en una motocicleta en su vida, así que desconocían por completo los mecanismos necesarios para que aquello se moviera. De alguna forma era beneficioso, porque ellos no iban encaminados a una moto ortodoxa, ni siquiera de forma subconsciente. El hecho de que no tuvieran ni idea de mecánica les ayudó a crear este extraño y maravilloso vehículo”.
Realmente, ser capaz de conducirlo era otra historia. Nolan confirma: “El producto acabado con el que Chris y su equipo aparecieron era muy sorprendente, muy eficaz y funcionaba muy bien, pero es increíblemente difícil conducirlo y manejarlo”.
Con el fin de maniobrar con el Bat-Pod, el piloto tiene que inclinar su cuerpo hacia adelante, casi horizontalmente, y manejarlo con los codos, en lugar de con las muñecas. De hecho, la única persona que fue capaz de dominar el Bat-Pod fue el conductor especialista profesional Jean-Pierre Goy. Corbould comenta: “He trabajado con Jean-Pierre un par de veces y es uno de los mejores pilotos de motos del mundo, si no es el mejor. Enseguida él se metió totalmente en la mentalidad de conocer esa máquina. Él dijo: ‘No me voy a subir en otra moto hasta que no haya terminado esta secuencia’, porque él tenía que concentrarse en las condiciones de manejo únicas del Bat-Pod. Estaría mintiendo si dijera que era fácil incluso para él conducirla, pero parecía algo espectacular cuando lo hizo, así que valió la pena el esfuerzo”.
“Necesito un nuevo traje. No me refiero a la moda, sr. Fox, sino más bien a la función”.
“Tienes que ser capaz de girar la cabeza…”
La silueta de Batman es una imagen indeleble, reconocible instantáneamente incluso para el observador más informal. Chris Nolan y la diseñadora de vestuario Lindy Hemming sabían que era importante conservar esa imagen a la hora de rediseñar y actualizar el Batitraje para “El Caballero Oscuro”.
Centrándose en un aumento de la comodidad y una mejora de la flexibilidad, Hemming y su equipo hicieron una amplia investigación sobre los trajes protectores utilizados por los pilotos de motocross, así como el blindaje protector de estilo militar. “Queríamos que el nuevo Batitraje fuera un equipo más ágil, con mayor maniobrabilidad y capacidad para respirar, como una moderna armadura en lugar de un traje de goma”, dice Hemming, refiriéndose al material de neopreno utilizado para hacer el Batitraje para “Batman Begins.”
El nuevo Batitraje está formado por 110 piezas independientes. La capa base del traje estaba hecha de un material de malla de poliéster, que es utilizado por los fabricantes militares y de deportes de alta tecnología debido a sus propiedades anti-humedad. Entonces, se añadieron piezas moldeadas de uretano flexible a la malla para formar la placa de la armadura general. Para conseguir una protección añadida, se colocaron paneles de fibra de carbono, que son ligeros aunque increíblemente fuertes y resistentes, dentro de un selecto grupo de las piezas de uretano alrededor de las piernas, el pecho y el abdomen.
Para ilustrar la evolución del Batitraje de “Batman Begins” a “El Caballero Oscuro”, el supervisor de vestuario FX Graham Churchyard indica: “Había esencialmente tres componentes principales en el Batitraje de ‘Batman Begins’ y en esta película había más de 100, por lo que era un traje muy complicado. A eso debemos añadirle que cada una de esas piezas tenía que ser modelada y después moldeada y fundida. Cada pieza también tenía que ser reproducida docenas de veces para los múltiples Batitrajes necesarios para toda la producción. Fue una extraordinaria cantidad de trabajo”.
A instancias tanto de Nolan como de Bale, la principal misión de Hemming fue modificar el Batitraje para permitir una mayor rotación de la cabeza y el cuello. “Anteriormente, Batman siempre ha tenido que mover los hombros para girar la cabeza, por lo que eso era una prioridad definitiva”, afirma Bale. La solución aparentemente sencilla era separar la capucha del resto del traje, pero tenía que parecer todo de una pieza, para no comprometer la imponente silueta de El Caballero Oscuro.
El rediseño general se adaptó perfectamente a Christian Bale. “Era mucho más cómodo y mucho menos claustrofóbico que el primer traje. También era más ágil y me daba una mayor gama de movimientos, lo que me ayudó con las secuencias de acción y lucha. Pero me seguía dando esa sensación de invencibilidad”, reconoce. “No puedes ayudar si no te sientes protegido y más poderoso cuando te pones el Batitraje. Simplemente funciona”.
Cuando se trataba de lucha y protección, el nuevo y mejorado Batitraje hacía algo más que ofrecer flexibilidad adicional. El único elemento de diseño del Batitraje que permaneció inalterado de “Batman Begins” a “El Caballero Oscuro” fue la capa. Hemming dice: “Pasamos mucho tiempo perfeccionando la capa para la primera película, y no queríamos cambiarla”. La capa tiene una característica añadida: se puede plegar en sí misma en una especie de mochila y después desplegarse según se desee, lo que se consiguió por medio de efectos digitales.
Mientras que la imagen de Bruce Wayne no es tan emblemática como la de su alter ego, tiene su propio estilo elegante y distintivo, regido por su estatus social y financiero. Para vestir al hombre que está detrás de la máscara, Hemming colaboró con el legendario diseñador de moda Giorgio Armani. “Chris Nolan y yo queríamos que Bruce Wayne tuviera un aspecto elegante”, dice Hemming. “Pensamos que la marca Giorgio Armani era emblemática del aspecto clásico contemporáneo que estábamos buscando. Elegimos los tejidos y después trabajamos directamente con el Sr. Armani y su equipo para personalizar un armario completo de trajes, hechos a medida para el personaje”. Al igual que Bruce Wayne, Bale viste la línea más reciente de Armani, Giorgio Armani Hand Made-to-Measure. Cada traje lleva la etiqueta tradicional del propietario personalizada de Armani, en este caso Giorgio Armani para Bruce Wayne.
Obviamente, Harvey Dent no tiene los medios financieros de Bruce Wayne, pero Hemming dice que su armario tenía que seguir demostrando un aire de autoridad y confianza. “Le vestimos de forma sencilla, pero impecable, con trajes de (Ermenegildo) Zegna.”
La diseñadora de vestuario fue capaz de llegar a ser más extravagante a la hora de vestir a Joker, modificando el aspecto familiar del personaje para reflejar la generación del actor que lo interpreta. Hemming explica: “Cuando me enteré de que Joker iba a ser interpretado por Heath Ledger, yo quise que el traje tuviera un estilo más joven y moderno que las versiones anteriores. Básicamente, mi investigación abarcó desde Vivienne Westwood hasta Johnny Rotten, a Iggy Pop, a Pete Doherty o a Alexander McQueen. Estaba recopilando todo tipo de imágenes”.
Al final, Hemming diseñó un conjunto ecléctico que ella dice que “tiene una actitud algo petimetre, al que se le ha incorporado algo de estilo grunge”. Siguiendo con la paleta de colores tradicional de Joker, su vestimenta está coronada con un abrigo de color púrpura, que lleva puesto sobre un chaleco. Para cambiar su imagen, él también lleva puesta una chaqueta más ligera que la que se basaba en el aspecto Mod de Carnaby Street. Su camisa tenía un estampado parecido a una camisa que Hemming encontró en un mercado de antigüedades.
Los zapatos de Joker son de Milán y fueron elegidos por la diseñadora de vestuario porque tenían una solapa hacia arriba en la puntera, lo que ella pensó que recordaba a los zapatos de un payaso. Su corbata estaba confeccionada en un tejido que estaba especialmente tejido según las especificaciones de Hemming por Turnbull & Asser, un modisto con sede en Londres, conocido por vestir a la realeza y personajes similares. “Heath quería que fuera delgada, por lo que es una corbata de los años 60 pero en un tejido de Turnbull & Asser. El maquillaje de Joker también se salía de las anteriores encarnaciones del personaje. Mientras conserva una alusión a su familiar rostro pintado de blanco, su gesto socarrón, su caracterización para “El Caballero Negro” tenía por objeto darle un aspecto más frenético, que además generase su valor de impacto. La cara de Joker está cubierta de un panqueque blanco que está agrietado y es líquido en algunos lugares. Sus ojos tienen un espeso borde negro y se le ha pintado una aguada sonrisa burlona de color rojo, que se extiende desde su boca a las mejillas, pero que no enmascara mucho las terribles cicatrices que hay debajo. Su pelo es más sutil, pero sigue advirtiéndose, con tonos verdes.
El diseñador de maquillaje y peinado Peter Robb-King comenta: “Claramente, había una percepción en la mente del público del aspecto que tendría Joker, pero queríamos enterrar bajo su piel, por así decirlo, lo que este personaje representa en esta historia. Es alguien que ha sido dañado en todos los sentidos de la palabra, por lo que era importante que creáramos una imagen que no fuera, perdón por la expresión, ‘guasona’”.
El artífice de la caracterización de Heath Ledger, John Caglione, Jr., llama a la aplicación del maquillaje del actor “una danza”. Explica: “Heath haría crujir su cara en expresiones específicas, elevando su frente y bizqueando los ojos, y yo pintaría de blanco sus contornos faciales. Mediante esta técnica se crearon texturas y expresiones que simplemente pintando la cara de un blanco plano no se conseguiría. Entonces utilicé maquillaje negro alrededor de los ojos de Heath mientras que él los tenía muy cerrados, con lo que conseguimos texturas faciales consistentes. Después de pintar el negro, rocié agua sobre sus ojos, y él apretaba los ojos y sacudía la cabeza, y entonces creamos toda esa cosa ñoña y emborronada de color negro”.
La caracterización de Joker también representa un avance revolucionario en la aplicación de prótesis, desarrollada y ejecutada por el supervisor de prótesis Conor O’Sullivan y el artista de caracterización mediante prótesis Robert Trenton. “Utilizaron un nuevo proceso basado en silicona que permite que la prótesis se coloque sobre la piel de tal forma que no se vean uniones”, describe Robb-King. “Es absolutamente sorprendente, porque puedes colocar una cámara justo en la cara —incluso una cámara IMAX— y no hay ningún problema”.
O’Sullivan desvela: “Nos llevó unos dos años desarrollar la tecnología, pero después de algunos fallos técnicos, dimos con ella. Actualmente somos capaces de fabricar piezas de silicona que se apliquen directamente sobre la piel. Y se mezcla con la piel perfectamente; si no supieras que está ahí, te costaría mucho darte cuenta”.
Además, el nuevo proceso redujo el tiempo de aplicación a una fracción de lo que era necesario anteriormente. O’Sullivan confirma: “Para las prótesis de Joker antes se tardaba tranquilamente de dos a cuatro horas. En lugar de eso, ahora nos llevó unos 25 minutos y tenían un aspecto mucho mejor, lo cual era estupendo”.
Las mascaras de payaso del grupo de Joker se moldearon y pintaron a mano una por una. Lo más interesante de todo es que los cineastas aprendieron que cada cara de payaso está registrada y es propiedad de la persona que la creó la primera vez, por lo que todas las máscaras de payaso de la película tuvieron que eliminarse; ninguna de ellas se podía copiar de caras de payasos existentes.
Los efectos de caracterización más gráficos para el personaje de Dos Caras suponían una combinación de prótesis y efectos visuales. Robb-King y su equipo trabajaron en estrecha colaboración con el supervisor de efectos visuales Nick Davis para mostrar los daños en la cara de Harvey Dent, porque eran tan graves que no se podían conseguir totalmente con prótesis. Eckhart recuerda: “Fue interesante para mí en el sentido de que, debido a la tecnología, no tuve que pasar horas en maquillaje todos los días. La producción de “El Caballero Oscuro” comenzó realmente varias semanas antes del comienzo oficial de la fotografía principal. El reparto y el equipo continuaron en la localización en Chicago para rodar el prólogo inicial de la película: un espectacular atraco a un banco que pone en marcha la locura criminal de Joker. Las escenas iniciales también marcaron un hito significativo en el rodaje cuando Christopher Nolan se convirtió en el primer director que utiliza cámaras IMAX para rodar secuencias en el estreno de un largometraje tradicional. “Siempre me ha interesado rodar en IMAX,” comenta Nolan. “He visto presentaciones IMAX en museos y sitios así y consideré que el formato era totalmente impresionante. La claridad y nitidez de las imágenes no tienen comparación, por lo que pensé que si se pudiera rodar un largometraje espectacular con cámaras IMAX —y no sólo ampliar una película de 35 mm para mostrarlas en una pantalla IMAX— eso haría que la audiencia entrara en la acción realmente”.
Emma Thomas observa: “Cuando piensas en algunas de las películas IMAX que podemos recordar: han llevado estas cámara al Monte Everest, las han llevado debajo del océano, los astronautas las han utilizado en el espacio… Así que, si ellos pueden hacer eso, entonces seguramente nosotros podemos rodar en las calles de Chicago con una cámara IMAX”.
Al igual que con cualquier “primera vez”, Nolan y su fotógrafo de hace mucho tiempo, Wally Pfister, sabían que rodar en las calles de Chicago con cámaras IMAX representaría un conjunto específico de desafíos, comenzando por el tamaño de las cámaras. “Las cámaras son enormes y mucho más pesadas que una cámara de 35 mm”, confirma Pfister. “Requería un enfoque totalmente diferente, pero como cualquier otro desafío de la cinematografía, no puedes estar tan intimidado que te asustes de eso. Sólo tienes que morder un trozo cada vez hasta que lo hayas terminado”.
Para Nolan y su equipo, ese primer “mordisco” fue rodar las escenas iniciales de la película. Pfister recuerda: “La semana que pasamos rodando la secuencia del atraco al banco fue como una escuela de IMAX para todos nosotros”. Salieron airosos de todo aquello. Filmar el prólogo con cámaras IMAX no solo cumplió sino que además superó todas las expectativas, de forma que los cineastas tomaron la decisión de rodar varias escenas más con cámaras IMAX, incluida la mayoría de las secuencias de acción principal.
El equipo de Pfister tenía que encontrar una forma de aparejar las enormes cámaras, no sólo para capturar, sino también para seguir la acción. Recurrieron a la gente de Ultimate Arm, los creadores galardonados de la grúa de cámara con control remoto giroestabilizado. Los técnicos de Ultimate Arm fueron capaces de reforzar la cabeza de la grúa, de forma que pudiera ocuparse del peso de las cámaras IMAX. Pfister desvela: “Nosotros rodamos gran parte de las secuencias del Bat-Pod con Ultimate Arm, que nos permitía hacer oscilar la cámara arriba, abajo y alrededor del Bat-Pod y conseguir un metraje realmente sorprendente”.
El maquinista jefe Mike Lewis también construyó artesanalmente aparejos más robustos, que permitieron que el equipo de las cámaras instalara las pesadas cámaras IMAX en el capó de un coche, el lateral de un camión o en cualquier otra parte, según fuera necesario. Todos los montajes de las cámaras habituales tuvieron que reforzarse, con el fin de manejar el peso adicional de las cámaras IMAX. Nolan y Pfister también hicieron grandes elogios del operador de Steadicam Bob Gorelick, que, dice Pfister, “hizo un extraordinario trabajo para mantener en su lugar esa enorme cámara”.
Con los avances tecnológicos de su parte, el cinematógrafo asumió que el propio peso de la cámara IMAX le impediría hacer tomas a mano, pero Nolan tenía otras ideas. Pfister recuerda: “En las primeras fases de la preproducción, Chris me dijo: ‘Tienes que intentar manejar con la mano una de las cámaras IMAX en algún momento, sólo para poder decir que lo hiciste’. Y yo dije: ‘¡De ninguna manera! No voy a colocar esa cosa en mi hombro’. Pero él continuó pinchándome y dándome la lata para intentarlo, y finalmente me rendí y decidí que tenía que darle una oportunidad. Realmente hice una toma a mano con la cámara IMAX, corriendo delante de un equipo de los S.W.A.T. hacia un edificio. Más que conseguir la toma, creo que Chris estaba realmente orgulloso porque había podido conseguir que yo hiciera eso”, admite.
“Fuimos capaces de utilizar el formato IMAX sin tener que comprometer la forma en que habríamos rodado con cámaras más pequeñas. Eso no nos retrasó lo más mínimo y fue bastante apasionante ver que se iba consolidando”, dice Nolan.
No obstante, además del tamaño y peso de las cámaras, había que tener en cuenta otros factores a la hora de incorporar la película de tamaño más grande. “La composición de tomas es totalmente diferente, ya que el fotograma es mucho más grande, por lo que es necesario centrar las cosas más para atraer la atención hacia la acción. Y el enfoque es mucho más importante porque hay una profundidad de campo mucho más superficial,” aclara Pfister, añadiendo que el fotograma de tamaño mayor también tuvo un efecto directo sobre la iluminación. “Una de las cosas más desafiantes a la hora de rodar en IMAX es intentar ocultar las luces. Con un fotograma ampliado, se está viendo mucho más de un lado a otro y de arriba abajo, por lo que no se pueden colocar las luces donde normalmente se haría. Tienes que colocarlas detrás de objetos y en cualquier otro lugar donde puedas ocultarlas”.
El tamaño y la claridad del metraje de IMAX ejercieron influencia en otros departamentos también. Nathan Crowley observa: “Filmar en IMAX es una gran ventaja para un diseñador de producción, porque se observan cosas que generalmente no se verían. La perspectiva es inmensa. Quiero decir, deliberadamente teníamos muchos techos bajos y suelos brillantes porque permanecen en el fotograma. Entonces, una vez más tuvimos que asegurarnos de que los acabados fueran magníficos, porque incluso se verá cualquier mota de polvo en el suelo”, dice riendo.
Todo el mundo estuvo de acuerdo en que para conseguir el resultado valió la pena con creces el esfuerzo de dominar el proceso de aprendizaje. “Se puede ver absolutamente la diferencia”, asegura Pfister. “Es más nítido; tiene más resolución, más contraste y una saturación de colores más rica. Es una imagen mejorada en general, ya sea si la ves en una pantalla IMAX o en una pantalla normal. Creo que la acción saltará fuera de la pantalla en cualquier sala de cine”.

Con “El Caballero Oscuro”, Christopher Nolan intentó ampliar el mundo de Batman en un sentido literal, trasladando la acción de los confines de un estudio cinematográfico a la extensión de localizaciones reales. “Estábamos buscando formas de ampliar el ámbito de esta película, así que decidí llevar la filmación de localizaciones mucho más lejanas de lo que lo había hecho en ‘Batman Begins,’” dice el director. “El mundo real se construye a una escala que nunca se podría reproducir en el estudio”.
Como había ocurrido en “Batman Begins,” la ciudad de Chicago una vez más se convirtió en Gotham City. “Me crié durante un tiempo en Chicago,” indica Nolan, “por lo que es una ciudad que conozco y quiero. Es famosa por su arquitectura y es también una ciudad muy cinematográfica. Rodamos allí durante semanas en ‘Batman Begins,’ pero esta vez íbamos a estar allí durante meses y la ayuda y el aliento que encontramos en la ciudad fueron extraordinarios”.
Chuck Roven confirma: “No tengo palabras para hablar del alcalde Daley, la Oficina Cinematográfica de Chicago y, lo más importante, los ciudadanos de Chicago, que no pudieron haber estado más emocionados o más amables con nosotros. Nos prestaron una total colaboración y nos permitieron hacer cosas increíbles en sus calles, y nosotros lo agradecemos y siempre tratamos de respetar ese privilegio”.
Sin duda alguna, lo más increíble que la ciudad permitió hacer al equipo de producción no tenía precedentes: hacer dar vueltas de campana a un camión con remolque de 12 metros, de un extremo a otro, justo en el corazón del distrito bancario de la ciudad en LaSalle Street. Cuando Chris Corbould vio el camión dar vueltas de campana como se describía en el guión, admite: “Traté de llegar a un acuerdo con Chris —como, por ejemplo, que no todo el camión se desplazara o tal vez que usara un camión más pequeño— pero él no estaba por la labor de hacer nada de eso”.
Nolan responde, “Al final, me dirigí a él un día y dije: ‘Chris, realmente debería ser uno de 18 ruedas. Y sé que puedes encontrar una forma de hacer esto, porque sé exactamente quién eres y eso es lo que tú haces’”.

3. First -time Use APAD
3.1 Battery Management and Charging
For initial use, please make sure to fully charge the battery of APAD device.
• Just plug in the charger/adaptor into the DC socket to enter the charging state.
• Make sure the charging time to be about 10 hours for the first two times to use, and be about 5 hours in future use.
[Notes]: An inner setting lithium polymer battery is applied in this device. Please sellect a specialized charger to charge the device.
-- Battery icon will scroll while charging.
-- For the first two times to use, we suggest to charge the device after the power is used up, so as to extend the service life.
-- Please make sure to turn off the power switch when not using the device.
[Notes]: 1. If do not use for a long time, please make sure to charge and discharge the battery for once within one month to avoid damage caused by overuse of battery.
2. When the device is shut down due to low power, the device will indicate that the power is critically low and it is charging now. Please wait for a while at this moment. It will enter the main interface automatically when the device get enough power.
3. Please make sure to charge the inner setting lithium polymer battery regularly. Damage caused by overuse of lithium polymer battery is not covered by player warranty range. Problem caused by using an unspecialized charger is also not coverd by player warranty range.
3.2 Turn on/off APAD
Press and hold on the key to turn on/off the APAD device. See also the description of device.
3.3 Connect to PC
Just use the USB cable provided by random to connect the device and PC to achieve USB power supply or USB data transmission (Up side USB port use for Data transmission between the device and PC, the down side USB port use for connect external device, such as USB disk/ 3G dangle… ).
[Notes]: When you transfer the data between the device and PC, pls make sure the USB MODE on this position , not be selected (The device is default on no tick off) as follow:
When the device connects to the PC, the PC display will appear a new disk. Then, pls put the finger or pen on the status bar and last 2 second will apprear a new bar, draw down it as the red arrowhead direction.
It will apprear the below list, choose USB connected and operate it step by step as the follow pictures.
After you finished the data transmission, pls put the finger on the status bar the as the beginning. Turn off USB storage as below:
Choose the Turn off to finish the Data transmission.
• Entered USB flash disk mode, one can copy or delete the files of player on the PC.
• DRV catalogue is the driver of USB network. The details step as follow:
[Notes]: 1. System will shut down automatically under the status of low battery.
2. System will scan and repair disc automatically when restarted after illegal shutdown and the interface will stay in the image of progress bar for a while.
4. APAD Device Operation Interface
4.1 Description of Main Interface
Enter into the main interface when APAD is turned on. The screen is settled to be locked, press “Menu” key to unlock.
You are allowed to do the following operations
• Manage the icon of software in the main interface (Desktop)
-- Add a software shortcut: Choose a software icon in the menu inferface, press it and move this software icon into the main interface, release it, then you can add a shortcut.
-- Delete a software shortcut: Press the main interface software icon last 2 seconds, then it will show the mark of Dustbin in the middle of right side of desktop, move the software icon to the dustbin until the mark become red , loosen the touch screen, then you can delete the shortcut of software successfully.
Long press the touch screen, then, it pops up “add into homepage screen window”.

4.2 The description of menu interface
Through pressing the icon directly , you can enter into menu to choose the options you need.such as APK installer , email , music , settings,alarm clock, browser,youku, Daniu news and so on.
4.3 Description of Status Bar
• The status bar locates in the top side of screen
- The top left side show the information such as Main screen key , T-Flash card, the status of USB connector and so on
--The top right side show device’s WIFi singal, silent mode, wifi connect status, the battery electricity , the status of battery charging , current time , Volume-key, volume key, menu key and back key and so on.
4.4 Use of Touch Screen
APAD have installed a 7” touch screen.The following description will show the control area of the main touch srceen and introduce how to use the touch screen.
•No matter whatever interface you are stay, you can return to the main screen directly by touch the menu key lightly which locates in the top left side of screen.
Notes: The function of main menu key equals to that of the back key in the machine.
•In different applications, you can return to the last layer of this interface by touch the back key in the top right side of screen.
• In different applications, through touch the menu key in the top right side of screen, then it will pop-up the relative operation and set-up interface.
Note: Menu key in the touch screen equals to the menu key in the machjne.
•In the main menu interface, you can run software by touch the software icon lightly
• In different browser ( file, music, video, and picture browser), you can move the scroll bar up and down to scroll the file list up and down. You can slip the list quickly by touching the scroll bar cursor up and down.r
• In the internet browser and PDF reader, you can scroll the page up and down by touching the page and move it up and down.
5. Basic Settings of APAD Devices.
set-up: Press the set-up icon in the menu page to enter into set-up interface.
5.1Wireless control. Manage Wi-Fi set-up to connect wireness network.
• Wi-Fi: Turn on or Turn off WiFi.
-- When WiFi mentions “Turn on WiFi”, and the icon in the right shows , it means WiFi is in the closed position
--Click WiFi and the status mention that it is turning on … and the icon in the right side shows , it means that WiFi is in the open position.
Note: In the set-up of this device, other than the follwing additional description
- The right icon shows , it means that the option is in close position.
- The right icon shows , it means that the option is in open position.
• Wi-Fi Set-up: to set up and manage wireless access point
-- Network notice that the right icon is , it means that automatic scanning is in the close position.
-- Click Network notice, the right icon shows , it means that scanner is in the open position , the deive will seach automaticly and add the nearby WiFi network which can be connected. Click wireless network port , then you can connect network. After connectiong successful , the WiFi set-up icon will show have connected to ……, it means that the device have connected to network successfully.
-- As to the WiFi router which have been connected before, this machine will keep record automaticly, if you need to connect again in the future , you just need to turn on WiFi in the WiFi set-up , or choose this WiFi router then connect it. When the status of WiFi set-up is open (showing turn off WiFi), the machine will search the WiFi router automaticly and then connect to it when the device is started up each time.
Notes: You can enter into Wi-Fi set-up directly by pressing the icon network connect manager
5.2 Sound and display
You can set up the tone, notice and the brightness of screen.
• Silent mode: All sound will become silent except for Media and alarm.
• Loudspeaker mode: you can use loudspeaker
•The volume of ring: you can set up the volume of ring.
•The volume of media: Adjust the volume of media by clicking the move point to right and left
•Notice Tone: set up the default notice tone.
•The choice of operative tone: there are sound when you choose the screen.
• SD card notice: the volume of the prohibition of SD card/
Notes: The volume of ring, notice ring, operative sound operation, SD card notice are used to cellphone system, in APAD system, it will show absent.
• Direction: it will change the direction automaticly when you rotate the MID
•Cartoon: it will show cartoon when you open or close a window.
• Brightness: Adjust the brightness of screen by moving the point to left and right.
•Standby of screen: before turn off the machine automaticly, it will adjust to delay the turning off. There are 6 kind of time for your choose such as 15 seconds, 30 seconds,1 minute, 2 minutes, 10 minutes.
5.3 Safty and Location – to set up my location and passworld selections.
• Use of wireless network: you can check the location of application by using wireless network.
• Visible password: it will show your password when you typing them
5.4 Applications: manage application, set up shortcut directly.
• Unknown source: you can choose whether it is allowed to install non-market applications.
• Quick start-up: set-up the keyboard shortcut in the running applications
• Manage applications: Managing and deleting the installed applications
• Explore: set up the explore option in the applications.
5.5 SD card and MID Save: remove SD card to see the available memory space.
Notes: pls removing the SD card by the opotion delete the SD card safely in case of damaging the device by remove it directly.
5.6 Date and time, set up date, time, time zone and formality.
• Set up date and time: Enter into the interface of date settings to set up the date.
• Select time zone: enter into the interface of choosing time zone to set up the time zone.
• Set up time: Enter into the interface of time settings to set up the time.
• Sset up 24 hour formality: set up the formality of displaying time
• Select the formality of showing date: you can choose different formality to show date.
5.7 Area and text -Set up the option area ( language and are), text typing and correct automaticly.

• After entering into the option of carlibration of touch screen , you can touch the singal which appeared in the top right corner, top left corner , bottom right corner , bottom right corner and the central .
5.9 Selection of USB mode: choose the workable mode of USB : OTG/HOST/SLAVE……
• Host mode: choose use work in the host mode, under this mode , you can plug U card or 3G module.
5.10 About MID
You can look up the relative law information and the status of MID and the editon of software.
This device supports the third party’s applications on the basis of android platform. Most of the applications can be downloaded from the website, and copoed into the flash or SD card of this device.
Click the“ ” and the Apk installer selections pop up: Installer, Manager, and Exit.
• Installation Installer: Click the Install Installer, enter the Apk installation interface.
and Correspond to the flash disk and SD card storage control.
Select the format inside the APK setup, click on the installation, operation is completed and returned to the main interface, that is, the corresponding software menu.

6.4 Application Market
The machine comes with “ google market”（android Application software market），Internet connection can enter the google market, enter account, password, online search after landing on the application installation process. If no account password, enter the application and choose to register an account, register it. After a few minutes to download and install the application. Google market has about more than 20,000 applications available to download and install, including office, entertainment, multimedia, system management and so on.

7.2 Music
AudioPlayer
Click Icon to go directly to RockAudioPlayer music player.
• Browse music files：
Into the player, the screen shown below seven kinds of music files, browsing patterns and player information：
- All Music: APAD the player will load all the music files there.
- Playlist: The playlist classification load music files.
- Search Music: Music names through search to find music files.
- Folder: The folder, find the music file.
- Artist: by artists Category music files.
- Album: music files by album category.
- Genre: genre classification of music files through.
- Player information: player version information.
When the new music is copied to the APAD equipment, the music library will be updated automatically. If the file does not contain information on some music labels in the music library will be its classified as Unknown。

When first run the program, the program's main page will show the icon of the way the books recently read (the way icons are very intuitive).
If you want to see other books as long as the point MENU button pop-up menu, and then in the menu, click "Open" option, then according to the Book of Books depends on the location to find files you can click to open。

Camcorder: Open the camcorder icon and press to make a recording and press home can open the menu: Gallery (You can find the recording in Video player ) and settings (You can set the Video duration:60 Seconds(for mms)/ 10 minutes/ 30 minutes ). If your SD card (Memory) is full, the system will alarm, the details operate as follow:
8. APAD FAQ
• The device can’t turn on?
-- The unit has no power or very lower power can’t support the device working, Pls connect the power adapter to charge it in a few minutes and check again.
-- If it still can’t be opened, pl contact our sales person or repair department.
• Screen is flashing after starting up
-- Short of power, pls charge
• Headphones can not hear sound
-- Pls check whether the volume has been set to 0
-- Pls check whether the music file has been damanged. Try playing other music to determine, if the file has been damaged, it could lead to serious noise or skips.
• Can not copy the file
-- Confirm whether the computer and the player is properly connected. Pls take it off and try again.
-- Confirm whether the storage space is full
-- Confirm whether the USB cable is damaged
•Some time the device operates many applications, the screen maybe handup.
--Pls turn off the device and restart it.
• When you use the Sound recorder to make a voice recording, maybe no voice.
--Pls speak to the MIC hole closely, if too far, you can’t make a voice recording.

3. Uso de APAD por primera vez
3.1 Gestión y carga de la batería
En el primer uso asegúrese de cargar completamente la batería del dispositivo APAD.
• Simplemente conecte el cargador / adaptador a la toma de CC para entrar en el estado de carga.

3.2 Encender / apagar el dispositivo APAD

3.3 Conexión a un PC
Sólo tiene que utilizar el cable USB suministrado de forma aleatoria para conectar el dispositivo al PC para conseguir la fuente de alimentación de USB o la transmisión de datos del USB (Utilice el puerto USB mirando hacia arriba para la Transmisión de datos entre el dispositivo y el PC, utilice el puerto USB mirando hacia abajo para conectar un dispositivo externo, como, por ejemplo, un disco USB / mochila 3G… ).
[Notas]: Cuando transfiera los datos entre el dispositivo y el PC, asegúrese de que el MODO USB no esté seleccionado en esta posición (El dispositivo de forma predeterminada está como no marcado) de la siguiente manera:
Cuando el dispositivo se conecte al PC, en la pantalla del PC aparecerá un nuevo disco. Entonces, coloque el dedo o el bolígrafo sobre la barra de estado y a los 2 segundos aparecerá una nueva barra; desplácela hacia abajo en la dirección de la punta de flecha roja.

4. Interfaz de funcionamiento del dispositivo APAD
4.1 Descripción de la interfaz principal
Entre en la inferfaz principal cuando se encienda el APAD. La pantalla está establecida como bloqueada, pulse la tecla “Menu” (Menú) para desbloquearla.
Se le permitirá llevar a cabo las operaciones siguientes:
• Gestionar un icono de software en la interfaz principal (Escritorio)
-- Añadir un acceso directo de software: Elija un icono de software en la interfaz del menú, púlselo y mueva este icono de software hacia la interfaz principal, suéltelo, y entonces puede añadir un acceso directo.
-- Eliminar un acceso directo de software: Pulse el icono de software de la interfaz principal durante 2 segundos; a continuación, visualizará el símbolo de una Papelera en el centro de la parte derecha del escritorio, mueva el icono de software a la papelera hasta que el símbolo se vuelva de color rojo, suelte la pantalla táctil; entonces, puede eliminar satisfactoriamente el acceso directo de software.
Realice una pulsación larga en la pantalla táctil; entonces aparecerá “add into homepage screen window” (“añadir a la ventana de pantalla de página inicial”).

4.2 Descripción de la interfaz del menú

4.3 Descripción de la barra de estado
• La barra de estado está situada en la parte superior de la pantalla
- La parte superior izquierda muestra información como, por ejemplo, la tecla de la Pantalla principal , la tarjeta T-Flash, el estado del conector USB y otras cosas.
- La parte superior derecha muestra la señal Wi-Fi del dispositivo, el modo silencioso, el estado de la conexión Wi-Fi, energía eléctrica de la batería, estado de carga de la batería, hora actual, tecla de volumen -, tecla de volumen , tecla de menú, tecla atrás y otros.
4.4 Uso de la pantalla táctil
En el dispositivo APAD se ha instalado una pantalla táctil de 7”. En la descripción siguiente se muestra el área de control de la pantalla táctil principal y una introducción al uso de la pantalla táctil.
• No importa en qué interfaz se encuentre, puede regresar a la pantalla principal pulsando directamente la tecla del menú ligeramente, que está situada en la parte superior izquierda de la pantalla.
Nota: La función de la tecla del menú principal equivale a la de la tecla atrás del dispositivo.
• En diferentes aplicaciones puede regresar a la última capa de esta interfaz tocando la tecla atrás de la parte superior derecha de la pantalla.
• En diferentes aplicaciones, si pulsa la tecla de menú de la parte superior derecha de la pantalla, aparecerá la operación relacionada y la interfaz de configuración.
Nota: La tecla de menú de la pantalla táctil equivale a la tecla de menú del dispositivo.
• En la interfaz del menú principal puede ejecutar el software tocando ligeramente el icono de software.
• En diferentes navegadores (navegadores de archivos, música, vídeo e imágenes), puede mover arriba y abajo la barra de desplazamiento para recorrer la lista de archivos. Puede desplazar rápidamente la lista tocando el cursor de la barra de desplazamiento hacia arriba y hacia abajo.

5. Configuración básica del dispositivo APAD.
Configuración: Pulse el icono de configuración en la página del menú para entrar en la interfaz de configuración.
5.1 Control inalámbrico
Gestione la configuración de Wi-Fi para conectarse a una red inalámbrica.
• Wi-Fi: Encender o apagar Wi-Fi.
-- Cuando en Wi-Fi se indique “Turn on Wi-Fi” (“Encender Wi-Fi”) y el icono de la derecha muestre , eso significa que Wi-Fi está en la posición cerrada.
-- Haga clic en Wi-Fi y el estado indicará que se está encendiendo … y el icono de la parte derecha mostrará ; eso significa que Wi-Fi está en la posición abierta.
Nota: En la configuración de este dispositivo que no sea la de la siguiente descripción adicional
- El icono de la parte derecha muestra , lo que significa que la opción está en posición cerrada.

• Wi-Fi Set-up (Configuración de Wi-Fi): para configurar y gestionar el punto de acceso inalámbrico
-- Si el icono situado a la derecha de Network notification (Aviso de red) aparece como , eso significa que la exploración automática está en la posición cerrada.
-- Haga clic en Network notification (Aviso de red); el icono de la derecha muestra , eso significa que el escáner está en la posición abierta; el dispositivo buscará automáticamente y añadirá la red Wi-Fi más cercana a la que se pueda conectar. Haga clic en el puerto de red inalámbrica, entonces se podrá conectar a la red. Después de una conexión satisfactoria, el icono de configuración de Wi-Fi mostrará que está conectado a……, eso significa que el dispositivo se ha conectado a la red satisfactoriamente.
-- En cuanto al router Wi-Fi que se haya conectado antes, este dispositivo mantendrá el registro automáticamente; en caso de que usted necesite conectarse de nuevo en el futuro, sólo tendrá que encender Wi-Fi en la configuración de Wi-Fi, o seleccionar este router WiFi y después conectarlo. Cuando el estado de la configuración de Wi-Fi sea abierto (cuando se muestra el Wi-Fi apagado), el dispositivo buscará el router Wi-Fi automáticamente y se conectará a él siempre que el dispositivo se ponga en marcha cada vez.

5.2 Sonido y visualización
Puede configurar el tono, los avisos y el brillo de la pantalla.
• Silent mode (Modo silencioso): Se anulará todo el sonido excepto los Medios y la alarma.
• Loudspeaker mode (Modo de altavoz): Puede utilizar un altavoz
• Ringer volume (Volumen del timbre): Puede configurar el volumen del timbre.
• Media volume (Volumen de los medios): Ajuste el volumen de los medios haciendo clic y arrastrando el punto móvil a derecha e izquierda.
• Notification Tone (Tono de aviso): Configure el tono de aviso predeterminado.
• The choice of operative tone (Selección del tono operativo): Se produce sonido cuando usted efectúa una selección en la pantalla.
• SD card notice (Aviso de tarjeta SD): El volumen de la prohibición de la tarjeta SD.
Notas: El volumen del timbre, timbre de aviso, funcionamiento de sonido operativo, aviso de tarjeta SD se utilizan en el sistema de teléfono móvil; en el sistema de APAD estarán ausentes.
• Direction (Dirección): Cambiará automáticamente la dirección cuando usted gire el MID
• Cartoon (Caricatura): Mostrará una caricatura cuando usted abra o cierre una ventana.
• Brightness (Brillo): Ajuste el brillo de la pantalla moviendo el punto a derecha e izquierda.
• Standby of screen (Espera de la pantalla): Antes de apagar automáticamente el dispositivo se ajustará para retardar el apagado. Existen 6 opciones de tiempo para elegir, tales como: 15 segundos, 30 segundos, 1 minuto, 2 minutos, 10 minutos.
5.3 Seguridad y ubicación
Para configurar las selecciones de mi ubicación y contraseña.

5.6 Fecha y hora
Configurar fecha, hora, zona horaria y protocolo.

5.9 Selección del modo de USB
Elegir el modo factible de USB : OTG/HOST/SLAVE……

6. Instalación y gestión del software del APAD
6.1 Instalador del APK (Instalador de la aplicación)
Este dispositivo admite las aplicaciones de terceros sobre una base de plataforma android. La mayor parte de las aplicaciones se pueden descargar del sitio web y copiar en la tarjeta flash o SD de este dispositivo.

6.4 Aplicación Market (Mercado)
El dispositivo viene con “ Market de Google” (software de aplicaciones de Android Market). Mediante una conexión a Internet se puede entrar en el market (mercado) de Google, introducir el nombre de la cuenta, la contraseña, buscar en línea después de pasar por el proceso de instalación de la aplicación. Si no tiene contraseña de la cuenta, entre en la aplicación y elija la opción de registrar una cuenta y regístrela. Después, se tardan unos minutos en descargar e instalar la aplicación. Market de Google tiene más de 20.000 aplicaciones disponibles para su descarga e instalación, incluidas aplicaciones de oficina, entretenimiento, multimedia, gestión del sistema y otras.

Si sale de la pantalla de reproducción de pistas musicales, ésta permanecerá reproduciéndose en segundo plano. Para detener la pista que se está reproduciendo, puede tocar la pantalla en el icono de pausa en la música y después pulsar ligeramente el icono de pantalla de inicio.
7.3 VideoPlayer (Reproducción de vídeo)

La lista de VideoPlayer cargará automáticamente el dispositivo APAD con todos los archivos de vídeo. En la lista de vídeo haga clic en el archivo de vídeo para poder entrar directamente y reproducir el vídeo.

8. Preguntas frecuentes sobre APAD
• ¿El dispositivo no se puede encender?
