English to Arabic: The Formative Parameters of Civilizations: A Theoretical and Historical Framework General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Philosophy
Source text - English Greek civilization provided a new self-perception for its citizens that differentiated them from slaves and foreigners not only politically but also ontologically. In other words, the difference between a citizen and a slave was not only a difference in socio-political status but also a difference in ontological substance. The order of Greek city-states and the Hellenic civilization were a reflection of this self-perception of the Greek citizen. This exclusivist conception of the citizen, however, fell short of sustaining the legitimacy of political order when the ruling elite became a tiny minority in a society made up of many different ethnic, religious and cultural communities reaching from Macedonia to India. The transformation from an organic city structure into a mechanic imperial structure was accompanied with a psychological transformation of self-perception. Stoic, Cynic and Epicurean responses to this transformative process were illuminating examples of the relationship between self-perception and political order within a civilizational tradition. A similar process was at work in the Roman civilization. The transformation from city politics of Rome into cosmopolitan politics of Pax Romana was linked with the transformation of Roman self-perception from polytheistic city religion into the sophisticated philosophico-theological self-perception of Marcus Aurelius, the Stoic philosopher Emperor.
The Formative Parameters of Civilizations:
A Theoretical and Historical Framework
Ahmet Davutoğlu
What are the paradigmatic constituents of civilizations as historical structures? What makes “civilization” a unit of analysis in history? What explains the endurance of authentic civilizations under the pressure and dominance of modern Western civilization? These are some of the questions we have to address if we are to endorse the following three assumptions: (i) the plural use of civilizations, (ii) different experiences of globalizations, and (iii) the need for a global governance of civilizational plurality.
What follows has no pretensions to provide a complete answer to these grand substantive questions. Yet, here I will discuss civilizations as products of comprehensive processes pertaining to the six fundamental dimensions of individual and collective life: (i) ontological re-definition of the self-perception (selbstverstandnis) of individual human being, (ii) epistemological re-formulation of human knowledge, (iii) axiological re-valuation of human norms, (iv) re-construction of time consciousness and historical imagination, (v) re-shaping of space, particularly in the form of restructuring the city as a reflection of “being-knowledge-value” paradigm (vi) re-establishment of a world order as a new way of administering political and economic affairs.
These parameters are immanent to the formative processes of civilizations. Among them the first three constitute the philosophical and ethical foundations of the being-knowledge-value paradigm and the last three represent the historical manifestations of particular being-knowledge-value paradigms in social, economic, and political structures. Now I want to elucidate what I mean by these categories.
Ontological Dimension: Re-definition of the Self-perception of Individual Human Being.
One of the main formative parameters of a civilization is its provision of a distinct comprehension of the ontological status of an individual human being. Through providing a new self-perception based on a new worldview, civilizations offer a meaningful basis of existence. A new self-perception is possible only with a new consciousness of being, which determines the relation between the ego, Lebenswelt (where the ego perceives itself), and the Absolute Being (God or the association of God with the nature as in the cases of pantheism and materialism).
In Upanishads, for instance, the indwelling all-pervading Supreme Being, or Brahman, is identical with the individual self, or Atman, and through the cycles of birth every individual being moves toward the realization of the identity of Atman and Brahman. That main message in Upanishads formed the basis of a new self-perception as the constitutive and distinctive characteristic of Indian civilization. The realization of the identities of Atman and Brahman in Being (Sat), Consciousness (Chit) and in Delight (Ananda), the belief in reincarnation, and the social order of the caste system can only be understood through this self-perception. The doctrine of reincarnation and the doctrine of varna – which stipulates that all men are naturally divided into four castes – became the main sources of self-perception of an Indian individual person and the justification for the social order in Indian civilization.
For the analysis of these assumptions see my foreword in this book, entitled “Civilizational Revival in the Global Age.”

English to Arabic: Robin Hood and the Wedding of Allin-a-Dale General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English In the rude days of King Richard and King John there were many great woods in England. The most famous of these was Sherwood forest, where the king often went to hunt deer. In this forest there lived a band of daring men called out-laws.
They had done something that was against the laws of the land, and had been forced to hide themselves in the woods to save their lives. There they spent their time in roaming about among the trees, in hunting the king's deer, and in robbing rich travelers that came that way.
There were nearly a hundred of these outlaws, and their leader was a bold fellow called Robin Hood. They were dressed in suits of green, and armed with bows and arrows; and sometimes they carried long wooden lances and broad-swords, which they knew how to handle well. When-ever they had taken anything, it was brought and laid at the feet of Robin Hood, whom they called their king. He then divided it fairly among them, giving to each man his just share.
Robin never allowed his men to harm anybody but the rich men who lived in great houses and did no work. He was always kind to the poor, and he often sent help to them; and for that reason, the common people looked upon him as their friend.
Long after he was dead, men liked to talk about his deeds. Some praised him, and some blamed him. He was, indeed, a rude, lawless fellow; but at that time, people did not think of right and wrong as they do now.
A great many songs were made up about Robin Hood, and these songs were sung in the cottages and huts all over the land for hundreds of years after-ward.
Here is a little story that is told in one of those songs:--
Robin Hood was standing one day under a green tree by the road-side. While he was listening to the birds among the leaves, he saw a young man passing by. This young man was dressed in a fine suit
of bright red cloth; and, as he tripped gayly along the road, he seemed to be as happy as the day.
“I will not trouble him,” said Robin Hood, “for I think he is on his way to his wedding.”
The next day Robin stood in the same place. He had not been there long when he saw the same young man coming down the road. But he did not seem to be so happy this time. He had left his scarlet coat at home, and at every step he sighed and groaned.

Source text - English The Paradox of Blackmail
There is nothing illegal about asking someone for money, nor is it illegal to threaten to report someone’s theft. But if, for example, you threaten to expose someone’s crime unless she pays you money, you are guilty of blackmail.
This case has the superficial appearance of a paradox, but, although some philosophical and legal writers have labelled it ‘the paradox of blackmail’, it doesn’t really merit the name. Even if blackmail were nothing but the simple combination of a threat and a demand, it wouldn’t give rise to a genuine paradox. This is easy to see if you consider some parallel cases. It is not in itself illegal to be drunk nor is it illegal to drive a car, but it is illegal to be drunk while driving. It is not illegal for two adults to have consensual sexual intercourse nor is it illegal for them to be seen together in a crowded public park, but it is illegal for them to be seen together having sexual intercourse in a crowded public park.
However, blackmail is not merely any combination of a threat and a demand: the threat and the demand must be related in a particular way. Blackmail is a demand backed by a threat. The threat is made in order to make sure that the demand is met. If the threat is made for some other reason, then this is not a case of blackmail, as the following example makes clear. Suppose Arthur notices his friend Barbara shoplifting. He is short of money and so approaches her and asks her for some cash. He then tells her he is going to report her. Barbara thinks she is being blackmailed, and that if she gives him the money he will keep quiet. But Arthur will report her even if she pays up, and he tells her this (and means it). In this example Arthur certainly isn’t blackmailing Barbara, despite the fact that he is making a threat and is asking for money.
Blackmail arises only when a demand is actually backed by a threat. As she knows he is going to carry out the threat whatever happens, Barbara is under no pressure to give him money. Once you recognize that blackmail is not simply a threat plus a demand, then the alleged paradox of blackmail dissolves.
But does it matter whether or not there is a paradox of black- mail? Yes, it does, because, if there were a genuine paradox, then there would be no satisfactory way of justifying a law against blackmail while avoiding the paradox.
If one or more of the component acts involved in blackmail were itself illegal or ought to be, then it might seem that this would provide grounds for making blackmail illegal. The alleged paradox would obviously be avoided in such circumstances. For example, a blackmailer who threatens violence commits the separate offence of threatening violence, which is a crime whether or not the threat is made within the context of blackmail. But, as this example makes obvious, if the wrong involved in the threats themselves were the only wrong involved, then there would be no reason for the law to treat them separately as blackmail. Yet in cases like this the element of blackmail exacerbates the offence, so that there is more to the wrong than the threat of violence.
Where criminals are blackmailed, you might try to identify a further component of the blackmail in virtue of which it should be a crime. For example, in English law it is an offence to accept, or agree to accept, money for not disclosing information that might be of material help in enabling a prosecution (except when the money is reasonable compensation for loss caused by the offence). However, the reason why the blackmailer implies that he will take money for his silence is that he threatens to report the crime unless the victim pays up. The implication arises only because the demand is backed up by a threat and does not simply accompany it. It is difficult to see how there could be such an implication if the paradox were genuine and blackmail were simply a combination of unrelated components. But set that complication aside. The proposal would still not cover blackmail adequately, since you are guilty of blackmail as soon as you make the blackmail threat. A victim who neither pays up nor offers to do so has still been black- mailed. And, if the criminality of the extra component were enough to make blackmail of criminals an offence, there would once again be no need of a separate crime of blackmail in these cases.
In short, until you recognize that the alleged paradox of blackmail is really no paradox, you are not going to be able to give satisfactory reasons for making blackmail illegal.
The so-called ‘paradox’ of blackmail has its origins in a series of articles written in the 1950s by the distinguished academic criminal lawyer, Glanville Williams, although he himself did not describe it as a paradox.
The Paradox of Jurisdiction
Denise shoots Paul in February 2001 in Texas. The wounded Paul goes home to New Hampshire, where he dies of his wounds six months later, in August. Paul is not killed in February in Texas since he is not dead by then. Nor is he killed in August in New Hampshire. There doesn’t seem to be any other time or place to locate the killing.
But mustn’t he have been killed somewhere and at some time?
Paul was not killed in February in Texas; otherwise he would have been killed six months before he died. But wasn’t the shooting a killing because it caused the death six months later? No, in February he was fatally wounded, but not yet dead. The shooting only became a killing six months later. Similarly he was not killed in Texas, since he did not die there. If you’re not dead you haven’t (yet) been killed, though you may have been fatally injured.
But neither was he killed in August, when the shooting became a killing, for Denise had done nothing further to cause his death since February. And if Paul was not killed in August, he was not killed in New Hampshire. Denise was never anywhere near New Hampshire anyway.
But mustn’t Paul have been killed somewhere and at some time? And if not in Texas or New Hampshire, it doesn’t seem he could have been killed anywhere. And if he was killed neither in February nor in August, then it doesn’t seem there was any time at which he was killed either.
But we can certainly say he was killed in 2001 in the US. Perhaps to go on to ask ‘But when exactly in 2001, and where exactly in the US?’ is in the circumstances to ask a bogus question. The facts are simply that Denise fired in February and as a result the wounded Paul died six months later in another state. There is no further fact about precisely when he was killed, and so it is a mistake to look for one.
This type of case is significant for law – hence the name given here to the paradox. If Denise murdered Paul, then under what legal jurisdiction is she liable? The answer can make a difference to the precise law to be applied and her penal liability. For example, Texas has the death penalty but New Hampshire doesn’t. So courts have to decide where and when liability is incurred.
The courts vary in the answers they give in different cases. In an English criminal case in 1971 the court had to decide when and where liability for demanding money with menaces was incurred, at the posting of the letter or at its receipt. It settled on the time and place of the posting. On the other hand, in a 1952 case the court held that the defendant was liable for a libellous broadcast where it was heard rather than where it was transmitted. And in an English libel case in the early nineteenth century the court decided that liability for a criminal libel arose both where it was written and where it was published. (These examples are given by Alan White at the end of the paper cited below, where full references for the cases will be found.) If the quietist proposal above is right, then, although the judges are required to determine how the law is to be applied, they should not do so by asking precisely when and where the demand for money really took place, as if this were a further fact they needed to discover. The facts are already fully known. What they have to decide is when and where liability is incurred.
Translation - Arabic

Source text - Arabic
Translation - English Summary of the African Ambassadors' Meeting with GISR Institute
at HBKU University
November 17, 2025
The following highlights the key outcomes of the meeting convened by GISR Institute with the African Ambassadors' Group in Doha:
1. Thirty ambassadors and representatives from African embassies in Doha participated in the meeting.
2. Of the ten Arab nations located in Africa, only half were represented; namely, the ambassadors or representatives of Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Sudan, and Somalia.
3. What became most evident, either directly through their statements or implicitly woven throughout their remarks, was the ambassadors' deep concern over the lack of recognition for their countries' value and the marginalization they endure. Consequently, they welcomed unanimously and enthusiastically the concept of an "African Group" proposed by GISR, expressing their readiness to support any initiative that strengthens understanding of African issues.
4. A comprehensive presentation was delivered on GISR Institute: its founding concept, vision, areas of activity, and the significant role the African continent plays in its research programs.
5. Several African ambassadors emphasized the need to define the goal of any future collaboration, stressing the importance of rewriting the African narrative in international relations through African voices. They rejected the notion of the continent being merely a subject narrated by others, insisting that Africans must tell their own stories.
6. Participants warmly welcomed the economic conference that GISR will host on December 15th, expressing their willingness to nominate distinguished African figures in their respective fields to participate.
7. The idea of establishing cooperation through an institutional mechanism was proposed: the creation of a "GISR-Africa Forum" to serve as a strategic, periodic platform (potentially biennial).
8. GISR's partners in this forum would be African think tanks, potentially beginning with four representing the eastern, western, northern, and southern regions of the continent.

Narrator: It all began when a puppy was unwrapped on Christmas Day, the family called him Flea-Bag and took him out to play. There was a mishap with his sapling. No one quite saw what was happening, so they drove on, and poor fleabag was a stray.
Song: [ Inaudible ]
Dad: Open your presents, boys!
Boy 1: What’s in this one?
Boy 2: Alright, I’ve got it!
Boy 1&2: Ohhh! A puppy!
Dad: Haahahahaha
Mom: Isn’t it cute?
Dad: What you gonna name him, boys?
Boy 1&2: FLEA-BAG!!!
[ Laughter ]
Boy 1: Come on!
Boy 2: Fetch!
Boy 1: Aghh! Flea-Bag keeps bugging us.
Boy 2: Flea-Bag licked my face. Gross!
Mom: Come on, boys! He only wants to play. Just roll down the window for him. There! See how he settle down?
Boy 1&2: Thanks, mom.
Flea-Bag: What? Hey! Where’d everybody go? What happened? Where's my family? Where am I? My collar. I'm naked. Gotcha!
Strange Man: Sorry, pooch, but no tags means I've got to take you to the pound.
Green Animal: Get off!
Itchy: Sheeesh! What’s it, Paris, that I gotta do to get a bite around here. Ohhh! Let’s see… French food or Mexican.
Strange Man: In you go, and keep your nose clean.
Flea-Bag: It is clean… ish.
Itchy: Sheesh, they'll let anyone into the pound these days. Be lucky to last till lunchtime.
Flea-Bag: Who's up for a game? Come on, let's all chase our tails. Want to run a bark? I know we can chew on my shoe. I never realized this was a size eight, but I think I've got a size 10 head.
Itchy: Direction, I gave him 10 minutes tops. Well, you know what they say, Never lock a gift dog in the block.
Flea-Bag: Anybody there?
Itchy: Down here, butter fingers!
Flea-Bag: Ahh! A talking shoes. Oh, cool!
Itchy: You gotta be kidding me! I mean it’s a joke, right? I’m on one of those hidden camera shows, aren’t I? Hey, mom! I’m on TV!
Flea-Bag: Wow! A magic bug! I mean, you must be magical. Oh, you'd be squished.
Itchy: Folks, we've officially got a live one here. Yeah, that's right, I'm a magic, un squishable bug.
Flea-Bag: I knew it. Ha. Wow, do I get three wishes? Huh? Huh?
Itchy: No, I'm not magic. I'm a flea. We don't squish. Nothing hurts us, digs yet flea powder and drowning.
Flea-Bag: A flea! Oh yeah, I've heard of them, don't you guys…
Itchy: Every chance we get nothing beats a drink, a fresh blaze…
Flea-Bag: Please, doing it is bad enough. I don't want to hear about it too.
Itchy: What can I say? I'm asleep to my fleezy logical (something). Itchy is the name. Itch e Flea. Now, I hate to eat and hop, but…
Flea-Bag: Hey! That’s my name, too! I mean, kind of I'm fleabag. You think we're related? Yike!
Grey: Fool! You just made the biggest mistake of your miserable life.
Flea-Bag: My life's not miserable.
Grey: Yes. Do you know who I am? Do you know what I do to any fool dumb enough to pumb me?
Flea-Bag: Too scared. Can't talk.
Itchy: Hey, bonehead, come on. He's new. Cut him a break. Huh?
Grey: You telling me what to do? Do I look like the kind of dog who takes orders from a butt biting insect?
Itchy: You? No way. I just mean you. You're a busy dog. You got a pound to run. Why waste time on a newbie?
Grey: Alright, but I got my eye on you, fly bait.
Flea-Bag: That's Flea-Bag, sir, Mr. Head, sir, but thanks. Waiting for my family to come and get me.

Bio
Hi, I'm Maram.
I've spent the last eight years living somewhere between Arabic and English, where one sentence can be translated ten different ways, and only one of them sounds like an actual human wrote it.
That's what I do.
Not just translate words, but translate meaning, tone, humor, culture, and all the little things that Google Translate confidently gets spectacularly wrong!
I hold a Master's degree in Audiovisual Translation from Hamad Bin Khalifa University, but my real education came from translating under pressure: subtitling videos where every character counts, interpreting for diplomats who definitely don't appreciate awkward wording, proofreading research that couldn't afford a single misplaced comma, and localizing content for audiences across the GCC and the wider Arab world.
Over the past 8+ years, I've worked on academic research, institutional reports, business documents, media content, marketing copy, subtitles, and multilingual communications. Somewhere along the way, I also became the person people send documents to with the words, "Can you just make this sound... normal?" Turns out, that's one of my favorite things to do.
My job is simple: by the time your audience reads the final version, they shouldn't be thinking about the translation at all. They should simply think, "Well... this just reads right."
If that's the reaction you're after, we're probably going to get along.
