I appreciate your interest in investing your time to go through my profile.
My interest in foreign languages started when I first read an abridged version of Don Quixote at High School. During my college days, I studied European and Latin American literature which invariably led me to study Spanish on a part-time basis for 4 years.
I also liked life sciences hence, took up a BSc Degree which is a combination of Microbiology and Genetics and Chemistry. While doing my graduate degree, I enrolled myself in many Jobs out of which my favourite was Market Research field studies. I worked on more than 100 projects ranging from opinion polls to HV Trucks, product pre-launch campaign studies, Medical Questionnaires, satisfaction surveys etc. I got in-depth insight of the MR field. Worked with industry majors like MARG and Gallup.
Later, my interest for Spanish was such that, I enrolled myself for MA in Hispanic Studies where the medium of instruction was Spanish. This degree included 4 semesters of translation and interpretation. While I studied at the prestigious JNU university, I also sat for my Tour Guide License and started to work with different European and Latam Tour operators. Briefly also collaborated with a Spanish Insurance Company. Working in the Hospitality Industry I gained insiders knowledge on how travel tours are organised, literature and lingo used in the travel industry. At this point my Spanish was near to native level. I was also working as a consecutive interpreter at conferences and trade fairs.
I continued my PG studies by doing an MPhil in Hispanic Studies. Then, I cleared a University Grants Test for Lectureship in Spanish. I taught Spanish for two years to undergrad students. My thesis was related to Folklore as a semantic medium of fight used by revolutionary singers in Latin America with focus on Victor Jara in Chile.
Then, I was privileged enough to be offered a scholarship by AECI (Spanish Government Agency for International Cooperation) to undergo a two years Masters programme in Translation at the famous Complutense University, Madrid. It was a tough and very demanding course but I benefitted enormously from what I learnt regarding translation. Later worked for a couple of years as in-house translator and interpreter for a Spanish MNC in the construction and infrastructure sector.
At this point, I specialised in Foreign Trade. Meanwhile, I took a one year professional MBA in SME Management with focus on internationalisation of Medium Scale Companies.
After this MBA, I was hired to head the Export Department of a Spain based firm which is a pioneer in the mining and natural Stone sector manufacturing diamond tools and selling mining and compressor equipment. This job took me all around the world from Latin America to Europe and Asia. It exposed me to Heavy Industry, Manufacturing, Services, International Auditing, Banking, Goods Insurance and Foreign Trade practices. I worked for 6 years in this post.
I quit this job to kick-start my own Foreign Trade Consultancy. I also made a comeback to the translation industry. Everything I saw and learnt in my career has made me a more complete translator and interpreter. Actually, I never left this field as I was constantly doing translations and interpretations every other day in my earlier Jobs.
My fields of specialisation are International Tenders, Technical Drafts and Documentation, Machinery & Tools, Finance, Banking, Accounting, Travel & Leisure Industry, ISO Certification and Foreign Trade. I also have a natural flair to translate legal documents and certificates and regularly collaborate with renowned Bar Associations of various cities.
In the past 5 years, apart from translation and consecutive interpretation, I have been actively doing over-the-phone interpretation. To date, I have logged over 80,000 minutes in this genre of interpretation which focuses on national health services, court cases, local and national police services, 112 and 061 emergency services hotline, 016 general information on gender violence.
I am a member of ASETRAD (Spanish Association of Translators and Proofreaders). I am currently the serving Vice-President of ACOCEX (Spanish Association of Foreign Trade Consultants). I am an active speaker at trade conventions and conferences.
When, I am not translating, I am a movie buff and a big fan of alternate or parallel cinema. Like to play chess and table tennis.
I trust this brief profile has made you feel comfortable in placing your trust in me.
I would be more than glad to reply any of your queries and willingly accept any suggestions to improve myself as a linguist, professional and a better individual.
Kind regards,
Ashwin Goud
