English to Dutch: The Bible and the Early Reformation Period by Gergely Juhász in Tyndale's Testament, Brepols, 2002, p. 31 General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Religion
Source text - English Applying the Bible text to one’s life therefore could only mean the open acceptance of this free gift of God by faith. This was summarized in the Reformers’ principle of sola fide, by which they opposed the Catholic teaching that application of the text goes beyond a mere belief in Christ’s salvific power. For Catholics, it also means keeping God’s commandments, because ‘faith without works is dead’ (Jam 2:26). The actual difference on this question, however, is generally overstated, as the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification of the Lutheran World Federation and the Catholic Church clearly testifies. Catholics never denied the undeserved character of God’s grace nor the necessity of faith, and the principles sola fide, sola gratia never meant a licence to sin for Protestants.
