English to Spanish: Gender equality and innovation General field: Social Sciences
Source text - English Within the European Commission the whole topic of boosting innovation in Europe is top of he agenda. However in most discourse and papers on the topic innovation is always defined in the classic, commodity-drive sense, innovation to create a product. What is mentioned less or rarely at all is the idea of innovation in terms of processes, it could be considered innovative to look at how to create more equality and gender diversity in science and research and as a number of recent studies have shown that teams of equal gender balance experiment more, share knowledge more and are more productive, striving for equality in innovation would be to the benefit of innovation.
With this in mind, I greatly welcome the topic of this conference because it looks at the link between innovation and equality and this is something that thus far has not been explored enough, the relationship between equality and innovation and how they can work for each other.
Without further ado I’ll move on to my presentation which looks at what the EU has done in terms of promoting greater participation of women in research, technology and science.
My first slide presents the famous “scissors diagram” from the European Commission’s excellent publication the “She Figures 2006”. This diagram shows that while the number of girls entering university in Europe is over 50% of the student population, at the highest decision making level, on average only 15% of those in top positions are women.

Sin embargo, en la mayor parte de los discursos y documentos sobre el tema, la innovación se define siempre en el sentido clásico de producción: innovación para crear un producto, pero raras veces se menciona la idea de innovación en referencia a los procesos. Podría considerarse innovador analizar de qué manera se puede crear más igualdad y diversidad de género en la ciencia y la investigación y, dado que algunos estudios han demostrado que los equipos en los que hay un equilibrio de género, experimentan más, comparten más sus conocimientos y son más productivos, procurar igualdad en la innovación redundaría en beneficio de la innovación misma.
Teniendo esto en cuenta, considero muy oportuno el tema de este congreso ya que examina una cuestión que hasta ahora no se ha investigado lo suficiente, a saber, la relación entre la igualdad y la innovación y cómo pueden contribuir la una a la otra.
Sin más preámbulos pasaré a exponer mi presentación, que analiza la labor de la UE en la promoción de una mayor participación de las mujeres en investigación tecnología y ciencia.
Mi primera diapositiva muestra el famoso “diagrama de tijera” de la excelente publicación de la Comisión Europea “She Figures 2006”. Este diagrama muestra que, aunque el número de mujeres que acceden a la universidad en Europa es más del 50% de la población estudiantil, en los niveles más altos de toma de decisiones sólo hay, como media, un 15% de mujeres en puestos de responsabilidad.

Articles of Agreement
Article 1: This co-tutelle agreement is made on the proposal of Professor Dr. XX (XX University) and Professor Dr. XX (Universidad XX). The agreement is applicable only to the institutions and persons named in this document and is valid for the duration of the preparation and examination of thesis.
Article 2: The above named doctoral student will carry out research under the supervision of the academics named in Article 1 for no less than four years total duration. The work will be carried out in the above named institutions. At least 20 months in total will be spent at each of the respective universities.
Article 3: Registration fees should be paid each year to the institution where the PhD student spends the majority of her time conducting research and as defined below, which will provide the student with access to local (PhD) facilities. The partner institution undertakes to exonerate the student from the registration fees during the corresponding periods.
Article 4: The co-tutelle agreement allows for four years duration for research and thesis preparation. This period can be extended at the recommendation of both supervisors and approved by the relevant boards of each institution. Additional fees will be payable for this extension unless exceptional circumstances are agreed by the institution to which the fees are payable.
Article 5: Health insurance coverage for the doctoral student when in the Netherlands and in Spain will be in line with Dutch and Spanish rules, respectively for insurance. The student is responsible for his own health insurance coverage for the period that he spends in the respective countries.
Article 6: The doctoral student will be governed by the rules, regulations, policy and disciplinary measures of each of the above-named institutions while in attendance undertaking their research at that institution.
Article 7: The above-named principal supervisors in each institution will be jointly involved in the continuing review and assessment of the doctoral student’s work and progress. They will fully carry out their responsibilities in accordance with the rules, regulations, policy and requirements of their respective institutions. Should conflict between the regulatory requirements of the two institutions arise, the principal supervisors will negotiate a compromise suitable to both institutions in consultation with the appropriate governing officer or academic board within each institution.
Article 8: Both Principal Supervisors will decide jointly to allow the doctoral student to present her thesis for submission to the Academic Boards of both institutions. Where there is disagreement between the principal supervisors, the student may make recourse to the relevant appeal mechanisms available within the institution to which they are submitting the thesis (stated in Article 9).

Artículo 1: El presente convenio de cotutela se realiza a propuesta del Profesor Dr. XXX (Universidad de XX) y del Profesor Dr. XX (Universidad XX). El convenio será de aplicación únicamente para las instituciones y personas que figuran en el presente documento y tendrá validez durante el periodo de preparación y defensa de la tesis.
Artículo 2: El alumno de doctorado anteriormente mencionado llevará a cabo un trabajo de investigación bajo la supervisión de los profesores que figuran en el artículo 1, por un periodo no inferior a cuatro años. El trabajo se realizará en las instituciones mencionadas anteriormente. El alumno permanecerá al menos veinte meses en cada una de las respectivas universidades.
Artículo 3: Las tasas de matrícula se abonarán cada año al centro en el que el alumno de doctorado pase la mayor parte del tiempo realizando las actividades de investigación, que, tal y como se define más adelante, proporcionará al alumno acceso a sus instalaciones de posgrado. La institución asociada se compromete a eximir al alumno del pago de tasas de matriculación durante los periodos correspondientes.
Artículo 4: El convenio de cotutela contempla un periodo de cuatro años para investigación y preparación de la tesis. Este periodo podrá ampliarse si así lo recomiendan ambos directores y previa aprobación por parte de las correspondientes juntas de cada institución. Se abonarán tasas adicionales por dicha ampliación salvo en circunstancias excepcionales acordadas por la institución a la que se deban abonar dichas tasas.
Artículo 5: El seguro médico del alumno de doctorado, cuando se encuentre en los Países Bajos y en España, estará de acuerdo con la normativa sobre seguros holandesa y española respectivamente. El alumno se encargará de su propio seguro médico para el periodo que permanezca en ambos países.
Artículo 6: El alumno de doctorado estará sujeto a las normas, reglamentos, políticas y medidas disciplinarias de cada una de las instituciones anteriormente mencionadas, mientras permanezca en ellas realizando su trabajo de investigación.
Artículo 7: Los mencionados directores principales de cada institución participarán de manera conjunta en la revisión y evaluación continuas del trabajo y progreso del alumno de doctorado. Desempeñarán su labor de conformidad con las normas, reglamentos, política y requisitos de sus respectivas instituciones. En caso de conflicto entre los requisitos normativos de ambas instituciones, los directores principales negociarán un compromiso conveniente para estas con el asesoramiento del responsable del órgano de gobierno o junta académica correspondiente de cada institución.
Artículo 8: Los directores principales decidirán de manera conjunta si permiten al alumno de doctorado presentar la tesis para su defensa ante la Junta Académica de ambas instituciones. En el caso de falta de acuerdo entre los directores principales, el alumno podrá hacer uso de los mecanismos de recurso pertinentes, a su disposición en la institución en la que presente su tesis (previsto en el artículo 9).
