English to Tajik: Report of Proceedings Detailed field: International Org/Dev/Coop
Source text - English On November 20-21, 2007 a Workshop entitled Strengthening Local Governance in Tajikistan was hosted by the Mountain Societies Development Support Programme (MSDSP), a project of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), and held in partnership with the Urban Institute. Over sixty participants, primarily from government structures and civil society organisations from throughout the country including development partners funding and/or implementing related initiatives, attended the Workshop. The principal objective of the Workshop was to encourage mutual learning amongst a broad range of stakeholders and develop a shared agenda for promoting local governance in the country.
In the Keynote Address to the Workshop, Mr Negmatjon Buriev, the Senior State Advisor on Economic Policy, Office of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, emphasised that there was a commitment from the highest levels of government to ensure that citizens and civil society organisations had forums to provide input and feedback to government structures. He further underlined that whereas government was in a position to take the lead in working with a wide range of development partners, it clearly recognised that there was an important role for non-state actors to be involved in providing support to local councils of elected officials and administrations. The collective efforts of all stakeholders to strengthen governance and improve service delivery are significant contributions to the overall efforts at poverty reduction and Tajikistan’s long-term socio-economic development.
