Source text - English VEGETATION (Flora)
The steep-sided gorge of the river is wooded from the village upstream to the waterfall. An Oak-Birch woodland with coppiced Hazel, somewhat ancient in characer and typical of the well-drained slopes and thin, slightly acidic soils associated with sandstone. A rich understorey of shrubby trees and ground flora provides a diversity within the plant community. Many of the plants such as ferns, mosses and liverworts are very ancient types of flora which will have remained unchanged for thousands, even millions of year.
In spring, the woodland floor is a profusion of flowering plants, grasses and ferns whilst in the summer rains, a wide range of mosses, liverworts and lichens flourish, creating a rich emerald-green carpet on rocks and trees which drip with water after every shower of rain. In autumn, the flowers fade to be replaced by a host of fungi and the crop of holly berries and hazel nuts. Even in the snows and frost of winter, this place has a sense of magic, as the river runs through the narrow gorge swollen by melting snow of the Slieve Bloom range.

La ripida gola del fiume è boschiva dal paese a monte fino alla cascata. Una foresta di betulla con noccioli cedui, alquanto antichi in carattere e tipici dei pendii ben drenati e fini, con un suolo leggermente acido associabile all’ arenaria. Un ricco sottosuolo cespuglioso e una ricca flora del terreno contribuiscono alla diversità della vegetazione.
Molte delle piante come felci, muschi e piante epatiche (briofite), sono tipi di flora molto antiche che sono rimaste invariate per migliaia se non milioni di anni.
In primavera, il suolo della foresta abbonda di piante in fiore, erbe e felci, mentre durante le piogge estive fioriscono una vasta gamma di muschi, piante epatiche e licheni, che creano un ricco tappeto verde smeraldo sulle rocce e, dopo ogni rovescio, si possono notare gocce d’acqua cadere dagli alberi. In autunno, i fiori scompaiono per essere sostituiti da una miriade di funghi e da un letto di bacche di agrifoglio e nocciole. Persino nella neve e nel gelo dell’inverno, questo luogo emana un senso di magia, come quando il fiume in piena si snoda attraverso la stretta gola, gonfio della neve scioltasi dalle montagne Slieve Bloom.
