Peter Sanders's documentary “The Disappeared” marks one of the few to filter the entire scope of Argentina's eight-year "Dirty War" - a systematic and brutal reign of terror thrust onto the Argentine people from 1976 to 1983. The genocidal crime, which is considered to be one of the most unthinkable of the 20th century, is filtered through the perspective of one individual. A central aspect of the conflict involved the government's decision to abduct and exterminate random citizens "off the record" - including small children - thus instilling terror into the hearts of indigenes and suppressing potential dissonance wherever it threatened to crop up. Horacio Pietragalla is all too familiar with his government's psychosis; during his early childhood, Argentine authorities slaughtered both of his parents and forced him to move in with a maid. Only in time did Pietragalla discover the truth: the maid in question spent years in service to the general directly responsible for his parents' deaths. The documentary witnesses Horacio embarking on a long quest for his own identity, and - in the process - drawing out the long-unpublicized extent of the horror - the abductions, the rapes and the slaughtering that comprised the living nightmare and plagued his fellow countrymen. In The Disappeared Sanders follows Pietragalla on his quest, and conducts a shattering, devastating series of on-camera interviews with those directly responsible for the war crimes. Written and directed by Peter Sanders, 2007. This film is a Cinema Novo event.

El documental “Los Desaparecidos” de Peter Sanders se destaca como uno de los pocos en transmitir la trascendencia de la Guerra Sucia de ocho años de Argentina – un sistemático y brutal reino del terror impuesto al pueblo Argentino de 1976 a 1983. El delito de genocidio, el cual es considerado como uno de los más inconcebibles del siglo XX, es comunicado a través de la perspectiva de un individuo. El aspecto central del conflicto involucra la decisión del gobierno de secuestrar y exterminar ciudadanos seleccionados al azar “borrarlos del registro”- inclusive niños pequeños – inculcando así terror en los corazones de los indígenas y suprimiendo el conflicto potencial en cualquier parte donde amenazara con surgir. Horacio Pietragalla está demasiado familiarizado con la psicosis de su gobierno; a principios de su niñez, las autoridades Argentinas masacraron a sus padres y lo obligaron a mudarse con una sirvienta. Solo con el paso del tiempo Pietragalla descubre la verdad: la sirvienta en cuestión, duró años al servicio del general responsable directamente de la muerte de sus padres. El documental atestigua a Horacio al emprender una larga búsqueda de su propia identidad, y –en el proceso- saca a la luz el gran alcance del terror que no fue publicado – los secuestros, las violaciones y masacres que abarcó la pesadilla viviente y que atormentaron a sus compatriotas. En Los Desaparecidos, Sanders sigue a Pietragalla en su búsqueda y dirige unas estremecedoras y devastadoras series de entrevistas en cámara con aquellos directamente responsables de los crímenes de guerra.
