Source text - English When my wife told me she was pregnant, I got that stomach-churning sensation that hits you on a plunging roller coaster. I was excited, yes, but... oh my God. Parenting was for, well, parents.
So here I stand, bug-eyed and sweating buckets like some poorly-drawn cartoon character, the question marks floating in the air around my head while I try to prepare myself for the complete care and responsibility of another living being besides my cat. I'm responsible for making sure this little human doesn't grow up and turn into a complete monster. If the child turns out a social moron-- my fault. If the babe can't find Luxembourg on the map, blame me for not providing a better education. They'll need therapy, and of course that will be on my head too. So many opportunities for wrong turns!
I remember the day my father sat me down and awkwardly told me about the birds and the bees; it was perhaps the most excruciating and embarrassing half hour of both our lives. I can't do that to another human being.
Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. I can do this, I say; I'll be a great father. My child will be reared a well-rounded, educated, upstanding citizen of the world, and he or she won't hate me.
And then I imagine the baby, still safe within the confines of my wife's belly, suddenly opening an alarmed eye as the thought enters his or her mind: "What if my dad just can't hack it?
Translation - Turkish Eşim bana hamile olduğunu söylediğinde, hani patenle yokuş aşağı daldığınızda midenizde bir çalkalanma olur. İşte o bende oldu. Şüphesiz heyecanlanmıştım ama yine de…Tanrım! Çocuklara bakıcılık yapmak, anneyle babanın yapacağı işti, benim değilki.
İşte karşınızda ben: kötü çizilmiş bir çizgi roman karakteri gibi gözleri yuvarından fırlamış, kuyruğuna kadar terlemiş vaziyette, bir taraftan kedimin dışında başka bir canlının tüm sorumluluğunu ve bakımını üstlenmeye hazırlanırken, bir taraftan da kafamın üzerinde uçuşan envai çeşit soruyla cebelleşmekteyim. Bu küçük insan yavrusunun büyüyüp bir canavar olmaması gibi bir misyon var elimde. Bu çocuk olurda sosyal bir gerizekalıya dönüşürse, bunun yanlışı benden sorulur. Bebek olaki Lüksemburg'u kartta gösteremez, ona daha iyi eğitim sağlayamadığım için yine hata bendedir. Tedavisi gerektiğinde, tabii ki bu da benim başıma patlar. Kısacası hatalı dönüş yapabilmek işten bile değil.
Babamın beni oturtup, çekingen bir tavırla bana kuşlar ve arıları anlatışını hatırlarım. Bu muhtemelen ikimiz için de hayatımızın en ıstırap verici ve sıkıntılı yarım saatı olmuştur. Aynı konuşmayı kendim dışındaki bir canlıya yapabileceğimi tasavvur edemiyorum bile.
Böyle kuruntular için çok erken belki. Bunu yapabilirim diyelim: mükemmel bir baba olacağım. Çocuğum, her açıdan en iyi şekilde, iyi eğitimli, takdir görür bir dünya vatandaşı olarak yetiştirilecek ve kız erkek hangisi olursa olsun benden nefret etmeyecek.
Tabii bu düşüncemin arkasından karımın karnında hala güven içinde uyuyan bebeğimizin kafasına "Ya babam bu işin üstesinden gelemezse?" sorusunun girdiğini ve gözlerinin bir anda panikle açıldığını hayal etmem için çok da zaman geçmesi gerekmiyor.

On sekiz yaşımdayken, hayal kırıklığından sıkıntıya, idealden hırsa, aşktan ilişkiye dair sıradan bir çizgiyle doldurulmuş bir yaşamı aşağı yukarı da olsa tecrübe ettiğimi zannederdim. Her ne kadar anlamlı da olsa, çocuksu ve kati bakış açımla, var olduğumuz sürece bizi yoklayan mutluluklar ve düş kırıklıklarının bana yetecek kadar çok olduğunu öğrendim. Hayattan «beni hayretlere düşürecek» bir sürprizi bu kadar açık bir şekilde yapacağını doğrusu hiç beklemiyordum.

Door de rijksoverheid is subsidie toegekend voor de organisatie van tussenschoolse opvang (bijvoorbeeld voor het aanstellen van een coördinator) en voor het opleiden van ouders tot gekwalificeerde overblijfleerkrachten. Hiermee zal de kwaliteit van de tussenschoolse opvang aanzienlijk toenemen. Over de hoogte van de ouderbijdrage zal door het bestuur worden onderhandeld met de desbetreffende organisaties.

Eylül başı itibariyle karar verecek olan okul üst düzey yönetiminden bir heyet, yönetimi, velileri, öğretim üyelerini ve idareyi temsilen göreve başladı. Devlet yöneticileri, (koordinatör temin edebileceği varsayılarak) okulda barındırma organizasyonu için ve kalifiye yurt öğretmeni olabilmeleri için velilerin eğitilmesine belli bir mali yardım yapmayı uygun buldu. Bu sayede, okulda barınmanın kalitesi dikkate değer şekilde artacaktır. Velilerin katkısının büyüklük derecesi, idare ve ilgili organizasyonlar arasında halledilecektir.

My name is Binnur Tuncel van Pomeren. My last name is a reflection of international set-up that my family makes up (Dutch husband, nowadays German myself-, two kids raised in Germany in command of three languages). I am a Turkish native speaker, a post-graduate chemist and a full-time professional translator from English, Dutch, French and German specialised in technical and pharmaceutical (cosmetics, medical and natural sciences) fields. After having lived, worked and studied in various countries (including the Netherlands, South Africa, Germany, and Turkey where I spent my life until I became 25) I took part in various research projects in the field of chemistry (as a research assistant in European Space Agency, Netherlands; research assistant in Unilever, Netherlands). Then I decided to move to South Africa and did my postgraduate studies where I received BSc Hons and MSc degree in Chemistry TUKS, South Africa. Although I like diversity in translation, research and development on technology, natural sciences, sensors, robots, medical instruments and clinical studies account for most of my work. For most of those projects I am working alone unless the client exacts or I prefer for a peer reviewer actively working in those fields. All my translation is a three-step procedure: 1. translation (bilingual; almost a segment-based translation); 2. review (bilingual; checking for the inconsistencies, morphological or terminological confusion both in the source and in the target; 3. proof-reading (This is the refinement step, after which the translation is expected to taste like an original document.) Should it happen that your enterprise would like to assign me a translation project, I am glad to provide you more detail about my work and my colleagues I occasionally work with. Those colleagues, either as editors or translators, are permanently monitored and evaluated in terms of their performance on accuracy, morphology/style, spelling, punctuality and terminology.
