Translation - English In the kingdom of oil’s “major players,” Total has yet to become a giant. Yet year after year it earns its stripes as a player and as a winner.
Total’s tour de force lies in having risen to the place of fourth-ranking company in the oil industry, ahead of America’s second largest oil company, ChevronTexaco. This is in spite of Total’s virtual absence in the United States, the leading consumer and one of the largest oil producers.
“Contrary to that of Shell, Exxon or BP, Total’s production is not in decline,” stated Antoine Leurent, an analyst for KBC Securities. “The group has followed a consistent policy in regards to exploration and production…and, unlike Shell, which has laid off tens of thousands of employees, has had the good sense to keep people who have the necessary know-how—especially those from Elf.”
The result is that “Total is the company which presents the best visibility because they continued to invest during periods of economic slowdown,” added Aymeric de Villaret at SG Securities.
Mr. Desmarest was thus able to announce on Wednesday, February 18 “a new five-year period, from 2004 to 2008, during which we have made it our goal to expand production by 4% each year.”
Some analysts noted on Thursday that that meant a slowdown to the tune of 5% of the annual pace of the last five years.
But while Shell is struggling with the consequences of a 20% downward revision of its proved reserves, Total insists that theirs will continue to expand by 2% per year…
