English to Chinese: the proof is in the pudding
Source text - English With the possible exception of Wal Mart, Tesco is the world’s most successful and most admired chain retailer. Ross Mackenzie, the CEO of Old Fashioned Foods recently told a gathering of exporters, and would-be exporters, how the company formulated the product line, its presentation, and its promotion for the international hypermarket world.
Tesco has 30 per cent of the UK market share and 45 per cent of the dessert market share which, of course, is Aunt Betty’s sphere. When ten years ago Old Fashioned first ran its eye over the dessert shelves, there seemed to be several very well known and very well-entrenched incumbents, notably Heinz with its spotted Dick and sponge pudding brands.
As Sir Edmund Hillary might have told them, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Old Fashioned went ahead, and laid out its wares before Tesco. Bearing in mind that Heinz then enjoyed a 98 per cent market share dominance in their category, this was a piece of bare-faced cheek.
Here however, Old Fashioned had an answer, crisp in its simplicity. Tesco operationally would not be dealing with anyone in New Zealand. They would be dealing with an agent down the road. Tesco could forget about New Zealand as anything more than a mildly exotic brand with fresh and healthful connotations that could be drawn upon when and if required. In fact the New Zealand origin element has been played down, simply because there is no discernible advantage. As it turns out this was a wise decision.
The reason is that Tesco, anxious to extend its appeal into the old Sainsbury’s carriage trade territory, is making an issue of food miles; an issue not favourable to such a geographically distant supplier as Old Fashioned.
English to Chinese: Freeze-dried seeds really Last
Source text - English When Lowell Woodstock returned to Beltsville in 1978 after 2 years in Saudi Arabia, he found that all the freeze-dried onion seeds he had left from earlier freeze-drying experiment were viable, while more than half the air-dried seeds were not.
Woodstock, a plant physiologist with the Agricultural Research Service, kept the freeze-dried seeds for 7 more years of storage at room temperature and 40-50°C, found little sign of deterioration.
The original research in 1976 showed that freeze-drying markedly improved storage life of onion, pepper, and parsley seeds at temperatures are equivalent to those in tropics and subtropics.
Woodstock says freeze-dried works very well in combination with air-drying. First, seeds are air-dried to about 10 percent seed moisture and then freeze-dried down to 5 percent.
Air-drying can easily reduce seeds to about 10 percent, but after that point it becomes difficult, requiring either high or prolonged heat, both of which can damage seeds.
Woodstock believes that onion seeds and possibly other vegetable seeds dried by this two-step method can be selected in moisture-proof packets and stored for many years at room temperature or indefinitely at sub-freezing temperatures.
Lowell Woodstock is at the USDA-ARS Seed Research Laboratory.
