Source text - English Salvaging a 17th-century ship
In the beginning of the 17th-century, Sweden was building its empire in the northern Europe around the Baltic Sea, for which it required a strong navy. King Gustavus Adolphus ordered a fleet of new warships in 1625, when his country was in the midst of war with Poland. Three years later, the mightiest of these –the Vasa- was ready to launch, armed with 64 guns on the two decks.
The ornately decorated Vasa, featuring hundreds of colorful sculptures, had its high-profile launch on August 10, 1628. The beaches around Stockholm were filled with foreign diplomats and spectators for the event. The king himself was not in Sweden at the time, but had planned the warship’s maiden voyage as an enormous propaganda opportunity, showing off his nation’s superiority.
Yet, after only a few minutes of sailing, the Vasa sank. Of the 150 people on board, between 30 and 50 died in the catastrophe.
In took two weeks for the king to hear about it. He demanded an inquiry. Respected shipbuilder Henrik Hybertsson had died in 1627 before the Vasa was completed, so his brother and partner Arendt de Groot was held responsible and the ship’s captain Sofring Hansson, was arrested.
In the end, however, no one was condemned. The inquiry concluded the Vasa was well build, but badly proportioned.
At the time, there were….
Translation - Slovak Záchrana lode zo 17-teho storočia.
