Despite its history, thalidomide was found to be efficient in treating some diseases.
In the 1950s, thalidomide was used for treating morning sickness in pregnant women. However, evidence was found that it caused severe birth defects and abnormalities. An estimated 10,000 infants were affected worldwide with more uncounted stillborn or miscarried pregnancies. A lasting impact of these tragic events has been in the positive change in the drug regulation process. Much of the drug's popularity was due to its wide availability as it was accessible without prescription and also relatively inexpensive.
In 1988, Dr Frances Kelsey, an American physician and pharmacologist, was assigned to review the drug application —she denied approval based on a lack of safety data.
Despite its tragic past, thalidomide emerged several decades later as a novel and highly effective agent in the treatment of various inflammatory and malignant diseases, and is currently being used for its ability to treat a skin condition and cancer. It's also being investigated as a treatment for many other disorders.
Thalidomide (Thalomid) has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating multiple myeloma and some skin lesions caused by leprosy.
Researchers are still investigating thalidomide for use in treating a wide range of diseases and conditions. It has shown promise in the treatment of inflammatory diseases, mouth and throat ulcers related to HIV (including HIV-related weight loss and body wasting), as well as cancers (this includes blood and bone marrow cancers like leukemia and myelofibrosis).

5.5 In the case where a Bidder is, or proposes to be, a joint venture or other association (a) all members of the joint venture or association must satisfy the legal, financial, litigation and other requirements set out in this Bidding Document; (b) all members of the joint venture or association will be jointly and severally liable for the execution of the Contract; and (c) the joint venture or association will nominate a representative who will have the authority to conduct all business for and on behalf of any and all the members of the joint venture or the association during the bidding process and, in the event the joint venture or association is awarded the Contract, during Contract performance.
Conflicts of Interest 5.6 A Bidder shall not have a conflict of interest. All Bidders found to have a conflict of interest shall be disqualified, unless the conflict of interest has been mitigated and the mitigation is approved by LEO. The Employer requires that Bidders and Contractors hold the Employer’s interests paramount at all times, strictly avoid conflicts of interest, including conflicts with other assignments or their own corporate interests, and act without any consideration for future work. Following Eye Contact Rinse eyes immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.
Following Inhalation Move source of dust or move person to fresh air. Obtain medical attention immediately.
Following Ingestion Clean mouth with water and drink afterwards plenty of water. Do NOT induce vomiting. Obtain medical attention.
Following Skin Contact Carefully and gently brush the contaminated body surfaces in order to remove all traces of product. Wash affected area immediately with plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothing. If necessary seek medical advice.
Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed
Calcium dihydroxide is not acutely toxic via the oral, dermal, or inhalation route. The substance is classified as irritating to skin and the respiratory tract, and entails a risk of serious damage to the eye.
There is no concern for adverse systemic effects because local effects (pH effect) are the major health hazard.

Unfortunately, the doctor didn’t have an exact answer and he told her that it might be five years maybe longer or that she could not get pregnant at all. This broke her heart. Danielle considered several options and only one option stuck with her.
