Weil Weinflaschen immer öfter mit Metall oder Plastik verschlossen werden, sind die mediterranen Korkeichenwälder bedroht. Naturschützer fordern die Rückkehr zum Naturkorken.
Der Wein mundet komplex und intensiv. Nuancen von Quitte und roter Pflaume erahnt der Winzer im Bouquet. Den Duft von feuchter Erde und Menthol, von Tabak und Balsamico erschnüffelt er im bauchigen Glas.
„Im Abgang schmecke ich Kakao“, sagt Miguel Márquez, 47, und lässt den letzten Tropfen die Kehle hinabrinnen. Der Besitzer des Weinguts Bodega Dagón in der Nähe Valencias ist zufrieden. Sein 2004er Miquelius Seco ist ein önologisches Kunstwerk, biodynamisch erzeugt, keine künstlichen Zusästze, reine Natur. Selbst beim „finish“ hat sich Márquez für die Ökologie entschieden: Ganz der Tradition gemäss verschliesst er seine Flaschen mit reinem Kork.
„Meine Weine sind natürlich, dann ist es selbstverständlich auch der Korken,“ sagt der Winzer , ein Pionier seiner Zunft. Als ersten Wein Europas ziert die Flasche des Iberers das Waldgütesiegel des Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). „Ein Naturkorken schützt nicht nur den Wein“, sagt Márquez, „er schützt auch die Natur“.
Der Streit um den besten Flaschenverschluss bekommt eine neue Dimension: Bislang ging es steht um die Qualität des Getränks, wenn Vinologen um die Vorzüge von Naturkorken, Schraubvershluss oder Glaspfropf stritten. Nun schlagen Umweltverbände Alarm. Ihre Botschaft: Nur Wein mit Naturkorken ist guter Wein. Wer die künstlichen Alternative wählt, verkorkst eines der bedrohtesten Biotope der Erde.
„Der Trend weg vom Naturkorken bedeutet eine Gefahr für die Korkeichenwälder des Mittelmeerraums“ sagt Pedro Regato von der Weltnaturschutzunion IUCN. Auch Nora Berrahmouni vom World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) warnt: „Die Korkeichenwälder sind ein Juwel der Vielfalt und das Rückgrat einer ganzen nachhaltigen Wirtschaft; und dieses Biotop ist akut bedroht.“
Seit Jahrhunderten schälen Bauern am Mittelmeer im Sommer die Rinde von Quercus suber, der Korkeiche. Als Erster stopfte Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts der französische Benediktinermönch Dom Pierre Pérignon ein Stück Borke in den Hals einer Weinflasche. Wenig später galt Naturkork bereits als Visitenkarte eines jeden Weins.
Doch nicht immer ist der Korken gut. Von „Korkschmecker“ spricht die Branche, wenn sich Trichloranisol in die Flasche mogelt, ein Abbauprodukt von Mikroorganismen im Kork . Modrig riecht dann die gelobte Spätlese und nicht nach Aprikose, Ananas oder Quitte.
Zwischen 5 und 20 Prozent der Weine verdirbt der Muff. Weltweit schätzen Marktkenner, beläuft sich der Schaden auf bis zu 2,5 Milliarden Euro. Wachsender Popularität erfreuen sich daher Pfropfen aus Glas oder Plastik, Schraubverschlüsse oder gar Kronkorken. Mindestens jede dritte Weinflasche kommt bereits heute ohne Naturkorken daher, und jedes Jahr werden es mehr.
Selbst das angesehene britische Weinmagazin „Decanter“ fand kürzlich „50 Gründe, den Schraubverschluss zu lieben“. Doch was die Winzer kaum bedenken: Mit dem Naturkorken droht ein Landschaftsraum unterzugehen, der schon heute gefährdeter ist als der tropische Regenwald.
„Hinter jedem Korken verbirgt sich eine ganze Welt“, wirbt der WWF. 135 Pflanzenarten wurden von Biologen auf einem zehntel Hektar Korkeichenwald gezählt. Iberische Luchse und Wildschweine tummeln sich im Unterholz; in Algerien und Tunisien strolcht der gefährdete Berberhirsch durchs Gehölz. Fast die gesamte europäische Kranichpopulation rastet in den Wäldern.
„Montado“ nennen die Portugiesen die uralte Kulturlandschaft, in Spanien heisst sie „Dehesa“. Der Duft von Zimt, Vanille, Karamell und Eukalyptus hängt in der Luft, wenn die Korkeichen im Sommer geschält werden. In der Sierra der Espadán in der Nähe von Valencia etwa produzieren León Miravet und sein Bruder Adolfo an die sechs Millionen Weinkorken pro Jahr. Die Hänge der betriebseigenen Wälder sind so steil, dass Esel den Kork ins Tals schleppen müssen . Mit Maschinen, die sich seit Jahrhunderten kaum verändert haben, werden die Stopfen in der kleinen Fabrikhalle von Estabán Corks ausgetanzt, geschliffen und sortiert.
50 bis 60 Jahre müssen die Eichen hier im Osten Spaniens wachsen, bevor sie erstmals geschält werden können. Alle 12 bis 14 Jahre ist dann Erntezeit – ein nachhaltiges System, das die Bäume am Leben lässt und gleichzeitig die Familien der Brüder Miravet und ihrer Arbeiter ernährt.
Doch die Zukunft des über hundert Jahre alten Familienbetriebs ist ungewiss. Die Brüder suchen ihr Heil im Luxussegment. Handverlesen, besonders feinporig und extralang sind die Ökokorken aus FSC-zertifiziertem Wald – ein Edelpfropf für edle Tropfen. „Selbst Weine, die 15 bis 20 Jahre lagern sollen, haben mit unseren Korken kein Problem“, beteuert León Miravet, 35. Die Plastik-Konkurrenz jedoch setzt auch ihm und seinem Bruder zu. Bis zu einem Euro kostet ein Espadán-Korken. Synthetische Pfropfen sind schon für fünf Cent zu haben.
Können die Korkeichenwälder den Wandel überstehen? Wenn sich die Produktion nicht mehr lohnt, so befürchten Umweltschützer, droht die Umwandlung der Eichenwälder in Oliven- oder Eukalyptusplantagen. Bereits drei Viertel der Korkwälder Nordafrikas seien verschwunden, warnt der WWF. 95 Prozent aller Weinflaschen könnten beim gegenwärtigen Trend schon 2015 mit Plastik oder Metall verschlossen werden – das wäre das Ende für den Grossteil des mediterranen Ausnahmebiotops.
„Wir wollen, dass die Weintrinker mit dem Glas abstimmen“, sagt Jeffrey Parrish vom US-Umweltverband The Nature Conservancy. „Weinliebhaber sind meistens gutausgebildete Leute, denen wir klarmachen müssen, dass ökologisch produzierter, mit Kork verschlossener Wein auch ein Beitrag zum Naturschutz ist.“
Für die Weinqualität hätten im übrigen auch die Korkalternativen Nachteile, beteuert Parrish. Kunststoffpfropfen etwa seien meist durchlässiger als Naturkorken. Der Wein oxidiere schneller und könne nicht so lange gelagert werden. Bei Glasverschlüssen kann der Dichtungsring mit der Zeit mürbe werden. Schraubverschlüsse schliesslich stehen im Ruf, den Wein gleichsam zu ersticken. Ein sogennanter Böckser kann entstehen, ein ziegenbockähnlicher Geruch nach Knoblauch und faulen Eiern.
Für Winzer wie Miguel Márquez ist der Naturkorken deshalb alternativlos. „Ökokorken passen zu meinen Weinen“, sagt der bärtige Biodynamiker, der seine Pfropfen bei den Gebrüdern Miravet kauft, „die Kunden wissen das zu schätzen.“ Ab 40 Euro pro Flasche liefert er seinen Bobal nach Mexico, Russland oder Litauen. Sein Eiswein Dagón dulce – natürlicher Restzucker an die 300 Gramm pro Liter – ist Weinfans gar bis zu 300 Euro wert.

Because wine- bottles are being sealed more and more frequently with metal or plastic, the Mediterranean cork-oak forests are being threatened. Environmentalists are calling for a return to natural cork.
The wine is complex and intense on the palate. The wine-grower senses nuances of quince and red plum in the bouquet. He detects aromas of damp earth and menthol, tobacco and balsam in the bulbous glass.
“There is a taste of cocoa in the finish”, says Miguel Márquez, 47, letting the last drops run down his throat. The owner of the Bodega Dagón vineyard near Valencia is contented. His 2004 Miquelius seco is an oenological work of art; biodynamically produced, no artificial additives, unadulterated. Even with the “finish” he has taken the ecological option: in total accordance with tradition he seals his bottles with pure cork.
“My wines are natural, so, of course, the corks are, too”, says the wine-producer, a pioneer of his craft. The Iberian’s wines are the first in Europe to bear the forest-management seal of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). “A natural cork does not simply protect the wine”, says Márquez, “it also protects nature”.
The controversy over the best bottle-top has taken on a new dimension. Until now it was always a question of the quality of the drink whenever wine-lovers argued the merits of natural corks, screw-caps or glass corks. Now environmental groups are sounding the alarm. Their message: only a wine with a natural cork is a good wine. Whoever chooses the synthetic alternatives is spoiling one of the Earth’s most endangered biotopes.
“The trend away from natural corks represents a threat to the cork-oak forests of the Mediterranean”, says Pedro Regato of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Nora Berrahmouni of the World Wide Fund for Nature(WWF) also has a warning : “The cork-oak forests are a multi-faceted jewel and the mainstay of a completely sustainable economy: and this biotype is severely threatened. “
For centuries farmers of the Mediterranean have been peeling the bark of Quercus suber, the cork-oak. At the end of the 17th.Century the French Benedictine monk, Dom Pierre Pérignon became the first person to seal a wine –bottle, when he fitted a piece of bark into its neck. Not long after natural cork was considered the calling-card of every wine.
Yet cork is not always a good thing. The trade refers to “cork-taint” when trichloroanisole, a by-product of micro-organisms in the cork, infiltrates the bottle. In which case the much –lauded Spätlese smells of mustiness and not apricot, pineapple or quince.
Mould spoils between 5 % and 20% of all wines. Market experts estimate world-wide losses of up to 2.5 billion euros. That is why glass or plastic, screw-caps or even crown-caps are enjoying ever-increasing popularity. At least every third wine-bottle produced today now comes without a natural cork and this figure is increasing annually.
Even the respected British wine-magazine “Decanter” recently found “50 reasons to love the screw-cap”. Yet something wine-producers barely consider: Along with the cork an expanse of the landscape, which is today more endangered than the tropical rain-forest, is threatening to come to an end.
“Behind every cork a whole world lies hidden “runs a slogan of the WWF. 135 species of flora were identified by biologists on a tenth of a hectare of cork-oak forest. Iberian lynxes and wild-boar romp about in the undergrowth; in Algeria and Tunisia the endangered Berber deer roam through the copses. Almost the entire European population of cranes stop off in the forests.
The Portuguese call the ancient civilization “ Montado”, in Spain it is known as “Dehesa”. Aromas of cinnamon, vanilla, caramel and eucalyptus pervade the air when the cork-oaks are being peeled in Summer. In the Sierra de Espadán, somewhere near Valencia, León Miravet and his brother Adolfo manufacture up to 6 million wine-corks annually. The company’s slopes are so steep that donkeys must haul the corks into the valley. In the small factory building of Estabán Corks the stoppers are shaped, ground and graded, by machinery barely changed in generations.
The oaks here in the East of Spain have to grow for 50 to 60 years, before they can be peeled. Then every 12 to 14 years it is harvest-time – a sustainable system, which keeps the trees alive and simultaneously provides sustenance for the families of the Miravet brothers and their workers.
However the future of the family business – more than 100 years old- is uncertain. The brothers are looking to the luxury market for their survival. The eco-corks of the FSC-certified forest are hand-crafted, especially fine-pored and extra-long: corks that are fine for a noble wine! “Even wines needing to be cellared for 15 to 20 years have no problems with our corks”, declares León Miravet, 35. However the competition with plastic is also affecting him and his brother. An Espadán cork costs as much as 1 euro. Synthetic corks can be had for as little as 5 cents.
Can the cork-oak forests survive the change? If production no longer becomes profitable, then environmentalists fear that the oak-forests will be transformed into olive or eucalyptus plantations. The WWF warns that about three quarters of Africa’s cork-forests have already disappeared. By 2015, if current trends persist, 95% of all wine-bottles could be sealed with plastic or metal: that could spell the end for a large part of the unique Mediterranean biotope.
“We want harmony between wine-drinkers and the glass”, says Jeffrey Parrish of the US environmental group The Nature Conservancy. “Wine-lovers are mostly well-educated people to whom we must explain that ecologically-produced wine, sealed with cork, also contributes to conservation”.
Furthermore, the alternatives to cork also have disadvantages, as far as the quality of the wine is concerned, according to Parrish. Synthetic corks, for example, are generally more permeable than natural corks. The wine oxydizes more quickly and cannot be kept as long. With glass corks the seal can become mouldy over time. Finally screw –caps have the reputation of “strangling” the wine, as it were. A sulphide -effect can occur, leading to a goat-like smell of garlic and bad eggs.
That is why for wine-producers like Miguel Márquez there is no alternative to natural corks. “Eco-corks suit my wines” says the bearded friend of the earth, who buys his corks from the Miravet brothers, “ customers appreciate that”. He ships his Bobal at 40 euros a bottle to Mexico, Russia or Lithuania. His Dagón dulce Ice wine- natural sugar residues of up to 300 grams per litre – is actually worth as much as 300 euros to wine lovers.
Screw-caps and plastic corks?

The Masters Degree in Professional Translation of European Languages at the prestigious University of Newcastle Upon Tyne- for which I received a Merit- allowed me to broaden my expertise. Legal, medical, scientific , business and literary texts of deep complexity were the principal focus of the course. If my love of language in general led me to my first career- and my affection for German and French literature have lasted a lifetime - then a genuine passion to commmunicate across cultures in a wide variety of genres is the driving force behind my second career.
Studying and translating texts of such diverse subject matter as the following in German and French: heart disease, the herpes virus, beta-blockers, company reports, the economic crisis, patents, contracts , Trade Union Law, scientific and medical trials, Goethe's poetry and Kurt Tucholsky's journalistic writings, widened my perspective and knowledge enormously: and what fun !
Since August 2011 I have had a monthly contract with a New York-based company translating patents, something which has sharpened my skills: keeping WIPO happy is no easy task!
Also in 2012 I jointly translated a guide book to Brussels which was a good exercise in cooperation, and with the same partner I also translated a marketing brochure which received a verdict of "Superübersetzt!"
In July 2014 I won the contract to translate Dr. Manuel Wolf's massive, heartfelt book "Luftkrieg über Europa 1939-45" and in June 2015 I completed it. This work of a lifetime meant that I undertook no other translation work during those twoyears, nor have I undertaken any work since: there was too much ordinary living to catch up on. Now, however, I feel able once again to continue my second career.
Mostly I have tended to specialize in business and legal translation but I like to be able to tackle a broad range of assignments: the book translation mentioned above certainly opened a new dimension for me.
