Source text - English La goutte est une maladie liée à un trouble du métabolisme de l’acide urique entrainant une hyperuricémie et demeure asymptomatique pendant de nombreuses années. On distingue trois phases de la maladie, la phase aigue qui se manifeste par une monoarthrite aigue principalement la 1ère metatarsophalangienne, elle représente 50 % des attaques initiales [1] et se différencie de l’arthrite septique par l’absence de lymphangite. L’atteinte de la main est rarement inaugurale. La phase récurrente est marquée par la survenue de nouvelles crises aigues. En absence de traitement, la maladie peut évoluer au stade de goutte tophacée qui se caractérise par des dépôts de cristaux d’urate monosodique au niveau des articulations et des tissus mous. Le plus souvent la main est touchée à un stade tardif lorsque les taux sanguins d’acide urique deviennent très élevés [1]. Pour différentes raisons, 5% des patients atteint de la goutte ne répondrons pas aux traitement médical et auront besoin d’une chirurgie [4]. Les indications chirurgicales de la goutte au niveau de la main se résument principalement en quatre catégories [5]. Most often the hand is affected at a later stage when the levels of uric acid in the blood become very high[1]. For various reasons, 5% of all patients suffering from gout will not respond to medical treatment and will require surgery [4]. The surgical indications for gout in the hand can be broken down into four main categories [5].

Bio

After 15 years as a freelance translator and English teacher at the University of Montpellier, I accumulated two salaried jobs: one as a part-time medical secretary to a famous hand surgeon and another as an administrative assistant at the Hand Surgery department of Montpellier Hospital. Four years ago I was head-hunted and accepted a full-time job as translator for a startup called Medtech, specialising in surgical robotics. At Medtech I translated just about everything (the website, marketing supports, financial reports, patents, press releases, speeches...).

Medtech was finally bought up by the American giant Zimmer Biomet robotics. The company designs and markets robots for assistance with brain and spine surgery and further applications are currently being developed.

I still do occasional translations for my former contacts in the field of hand surgery and, as I have a wide variety of interests (horseriding, climbing, potholing, canyoning, singing, oleoculture...) I am open to translating just about anything from French to English and vice versa.
