How much or less is it possible with Trados Studio 2009 to process / create bilingual Word files (directly in Word, I mean, not opening .doc in some internal SDL app)?
How much or less is it possible with Trados Studio 2009 to import / export translation in .ttx format that can be processed before / after in TagEditor 2007?
If one/both actions are not possible, what (if any) are the workarounds?
Thanks! | | | TTX is the key | Jun 7, 2009 |
Hi Tomas,
If you need to supply a bilingual Word doc you can't. You can supply a bilingual TTX. So you open your word doc - or any other kind of doc - in Tageditor and save as TTX. You then open the TTX in Studio 2009 and process it. When you are done you save the target file as a TTX, go back to tageditor and save as target from there. Therefore you can deliver a bilingual TTX and a target file in Word or the original format.

I haven't installed Studio yet (what I have read so far strengthened my policy not to install an upgrade before a first patch is released ), but you lost me here - totally. Can you please explain what you mean? *doc file can be translated in TagEditor even in previous versions... is it not possible in Studio? Or is the compatibility a problem? If it is that what you meant, ttx created in different versions couldn't (always) be opened.
Thanks!

From Trados KB:
TTX/ITD files can be handled like any other files that you open for translation. You can either create projects or directly access them via the Open Document method in the Home view in the same way as other non bilingual files.
Segments that are already translated will then be automatically filled in the target language column.
But...
As of SDL Trados Studio 2009 we no longer support Microsoft Word as an interface for translation. The latest version of our software that works with Microsoft Word is SDL Trados 2007 Suite.
If you should still have bilingual Microsoft Word files, use the Cleanup command in Translator's Workbench in SDL Trados 2007 Suite to update the translation units into the memory. If required this memory can then be converted into a new memory in SDL Trados Studio 2009.
Regular Microsoft Word files can be imported into SDL Trados Studio 2009 and translated within this software.

Some of my agency clients already except Tageditor files as the bilingual and I am sure the others will. Up to now I always delivered in Word unless they wanted Tageditor but from now on (once I've got the blessed thing installed!) they will have to accept a bilingual Tageditor file.
Does that make sense now?

I see. Different versions have always been a problem. Right now it stll sounds like there are too many time-consuming steps to go through

I'd like to share my thoughts on TRADOS Studio 2009 and Word compatibility. I purchased the software this Friday because I have a huge project for which it seemed very suitable. Now, I ended up wasting almost a day for getting it operative (reinstalling my notebook, etc.).
Regarding Word compatibility... I have a Word file of about 50 pages in this job. I finished translating, I did the review and initiated the export of the target file for delivery to the client. Now the big surprise comes: "An error occured while converting fields back to Microsoft Word format". That's all. That simple phrase costs me another 2 days of work, a missed deadline, probably a lost client. So be careful with TRADOS Studio 2009. It's a great name waiting for a product. I thought TRADOS has gotten better since the 2007 version (which caused me so much trouble that I was forced to switch to Deja Vu - working perfectly for me -) but it has even gotten worse. ▲ Collapse | | | Tobi Local time: 15:01 English to German + ... Are you really sure this works? I have translated a TTX file in Studio 2009 and cannot save it as TTX. I can only save SDLXLIFF. If it is possible to save TTX, please let me know how.
I have clients who deliver and expect TTX files. If I cannot deliver TTX files again, Studio is worthless for me.

Giuliana:
Is SDL Trados Studio 2009 compatible with previous
versions?
Yes of course! Just like SDL Trados 2006 and SDL Trados
2007, the same company has developed SDL Trados Studio 2009!
Although SDL Trados Studio 2009 is a radically innovative
release, it has been created by the same development team as
the previous versions, so is therefore compatible. SDL
Trados Studio 2009 will enable you to open TTX and ITD
files, as well as use translation memories from older
versions of SDL Trados. It also features support for
industry standards such as TMX (for translation memories),
TBX (for terminology databases) and also XLIFF (as a file
format for translation). "
They write "open TTX", but I see no indication of the possibility to SAVE in ttx. What can someone with Trados 2007 do with xliff file?
So let's sum it up:
a) No (standard) possibility to process bilingual .doc files without 2007 (which you maybe don't have for any reason).
b) No possibility to save bilingual .doc files compatible with viewing/editing in Word
c) No possibility to deliver .ttx
I will happily stand corrected if anything above is wrong. | | | please comment | Jun 7, 2009 |

Please can anyone explain - if I go for Studio 2009, and a client sends me a bilingual Word file, or requires bilingual Word as output:
a) First, how on Earth could I update the TM with 2007 when I would have only 2009 after the upgrade??? (Let's forget the interim 2007/2009 period.]
b) Even if I update the TM, how does that help me in 2009 to produce bilingual doc compatible with Word?
c) If I translate Word file with Studio 2009, will the bilingual result be viewable/editable with TagEditor 2007 in Word? ▲ Collapse | | | more questions | Jun 7, 2009 |

TagEditor is not included in Studio 2009, it was last released within 2007, right?
Well frankly I don't like this chaos...
And by the way, if someone buys Trados 2009 as their first Trados, i. e. no interim licence / ownership of older versions, how are they able to deliver bilingual Word files at all??? Is every agency supposed to stop asking for bilingual Word files right now, big bang, by a force tradeur?

Even if it is possible that TTX files can be opened, they cannot be saved. This is concealed by SDL when they talk about TTX compatibility. I have some customers who deliver and expect TTX files. I had to export the TM from Studio, import it into Workbench and translate the files with Tag Editor again to get TTX files. Nice workaround

Hi Tomas,
I agree that it's a bit of a change. I had a look at the screenshots.. the interface reminds me of SDLX.. TE & translations in MSWord are not supported (I won't miss the latter *at all*, was a huge pain with some heavy & heavy formatted files, but I wonder about TW, even though the new interface seems to look a bit like SDLX, I simply hope SDLX impossible format painting is gone)
I am pasting a FAQ I found on the SDL site about ttx & word:
I heard that TagEditor and Word will no longer be offered as a translation environment?
When you see the new and integrated translation environment within SDL Trados 2009, which will enable you to translate up to 30% faster, you will be amazed!
The integrated translation environment within SDL Trados Studio 2009 is jam-packed with features that will make you translate faster, more efficiently and are easy to use:
1. New RevleX™ translation memory engine saves you enormous amounts of time with features such as Context Match and multiple TM lookup
2. AutoSuggest accelerates translation editing through ground-breaking predictive text functionality - a 'must-use' feature
3. Real-time Preview – check the final look of your document as you translate
4. QuickPlace™ feature allows you to quickly apply text formatting, tags, placeables and variables
5. 25 years of filter development and over $100 million invested in R&D provides the most comprehensive framework including new filters for PDF, XML and Adobe® FrameMaker® and InDesign®, allowing you to work on even more file formats
6. Faster project management setup and real-time quality assurance checks increase accuracy and saves time
7. SDL is committed to open standards. The new product makes extensive use of industry standards which enable easier sharing of files, TMs and termbases between tools that also support XLIFF (a file format for translation), TMX (for translation memories) and now even TBX (for terminology databases)
8. You asked, we listened – new filter for PDF, so that you can accept a project when the original source files are not available
9. Choose how you work with translation memories, from desktop to large enterprise, using the ‘elastic scalability’ of the new platform
10. Your feedback, your product: Over 80 ideas incorporated from ideas.sdltrados.com, where users can suggest and vote on what they would like included in future releases
With new features such as these, TagEditor and the Word interface will be a thing of the past!
