I have done voluntary translations in the past, and will do again, when it is for a purpose I agree with. It is not really different from other voluntary work I do, e.g. as treasurer of a local membership organisation (not to do with translation).

I regularly translate and interpret as a volunteer for Catholic charity organizations.
Also, for some disadvantaged medical patients.
Finally, I never charge my family members and close friends for any job I do for them.

Let's be honest. Our job is not one of those jobs which can make you rich, and in some countries (and with some language combinations) you have to work very hard so usually you do not have much time.
I have done some volunteer translation work, but it is not something I can do on a regular basis. I do not have much free time, and paid work is on top of my priorities. If I have some time off, well... I got a family, a dog, and some hobbies.
