I’m a native English speaker who has been living in Barcelona for eight years and translating/subtitling for six.
As someone whose parents are from the American Midwest, who lived in the American South for ten years, who went to university in NYC, whose best friend is from New Zealand, who has worked for years alongside British people in English-as-a-foreign-language education, and who has a master's degree in linguistics, I'm a passionate student of dialects, and I love that localization allows me to bring content to people in the language that feels right to them.
When it comes to subtitling films, TV shows, and video games, what drives me is the challenge to relay in English the socio-economic factors that influence the way a character speaks in the original audio.
You might say subtitling creative content is my jam and translating more formal language is my bread and butter. I have worked for translation agencies and direct clients based in the US and Spain in various subject matters, ranging from real estate, sports, medicine, pharmaceuticals, and immigration, to logistics. I use the research skills I acquired in my university education to provide accurate translations where technical terms are required.
