Once upon a time we had reasons to look up to translator associations. Hopefully, we will have again in the near future. For the time being, we are on our own.
The future of translation, in my very humble opinion, is not post-editing (whatever that might mean). It's consulting.

For instance, if you want a future in this business, and you are a legal translator, you will have to start reading tomes of legal stuff, so that you can advice the client.
Please don't be afraid to start doing that immediately. It's possible you will get some notions wrong. They'll laugh at you and they will feel very smart. No problem.
Let's all keep learning. Hard stuff, when we have the disposition. 5 - 10 minutes per day - quality time - is fine for the beginning.

Is it, now? I thought language professionals already did offer consulting services. As language professionals.
For instance, if you want a future in this business, and you are a legal translator, you will have to start reading tomes of legal stuff, so that you can advice the client.
Pardon me for stating the obvious, but if one already is a legal translator, the step you are suggesting is already acquired, as one cannot work as a legal translator - or in other specialist fields - unless they know what they are doing, with tons of literature and years of study under their belt.
Please don't be afraid to start doing that immediately. It's possible you will get some notions wrong. They'll laugh at you and they will feel very smart. No problem.
This is what amateurs do, when they pose as specialists in fields they know near-to-nothing about. And we have lots of those here. Just check the KudoZ section, in any language pair.

Dear Barbara, I understand his postings as a legal approach to attract (end) clients by posting in a very business-friendly attitude, as we all know that also major agencies and even important direct clients (i.e. the management board of ABB, Volkswagen, General Electric etc.) read the proz forums to find out new talents (and reject existing ones). Therefore we should be very careful with our postings in return, because maybe we will see him one day at the other end of the food chain.
